PART III: INTEGRATION OF COMPLEX PROBLEM SOLVING (CPS) IN FYP

It is hereby certified that this Final Year Project shall have the following Complex Problem Solving
(CPS) attributes:
Please provide a description of activities or work in your Final Year Project that exhibits each CPS attribute.
Complex Problem Solving
Attribute Characteristic
 CPS1 Depth of knowledge required Cannot be resolved without in-depth knowledge

Description:
Student has to understand the asphalt binder characteristic and properties and concept of homogeneity of the
asphalt binder when adding with modifier as a recipe of finding the best mixture for road construction before
conducting the study. In order to produce a good modified asphalt binder, for fatigue and rutting resistance, a
several percentage of modifier to be added in the origin binder shall be find out in the first stage by doing literature
review on the previous research study that have been done. Apart of that, student should know how to determine
the laboratory testing that will be done to represent the properties of the binder as to claim the applicability of the
modified asphalt binder.

Range of conflicting Involve wide-ranging or conflicting technical, engineering and

 CPS2
requirements other issues

Description:
Student has/will going to understand the important of the producing the good modified asphalt binder in relation to
with wide range of road engineering works. Student will be discussing the importance of the study in the literature
review section.

Have no obvious solution and require abstract thinking,

 CPS3 Depth of analysis required
originality in analysis to formulate suitable models

Description:
Since the study involves laboratory experiments, there would be no obvious solution. However, based on previous
study and knowledge acquire, student will make judgment whether the results obtained in their analysis are sound
and whether the analysis carried out is suitable.

 CPS8 Consequences Have significant consequences in a range of contexts

Description:
In the conclusion section of the study will relate the significant/importance of the study/result obtained from the
study with a range of engineering works.

 CPS9 Judgment Require judgment in decision making

Description:
Since the study involves laboratory experiments there would be no obvious solution. However, based on previous
study and knowledge acquire, student will make judgment whether the results obtained in their analysis are sound
and whether the analysis carried out is suitable.
