Automated measurement of alpha-1-antitrypsin in stool samples as

an indicator for increased intestinal permeability

Alpha-1-Antitrypsin – ORG 286

24 Alegria® Test Strips
Alpha-1-antitrypsin is released during inflammatory processes in the intestines.

Excretion of alpha-1-antitrypsin with stool is a measure of serum proteins crossing into the
intestinal lumen, indicating increased permeability of the intestinal mucosa (leaky gut).

Elevated levels of alpha-1-antitrypsin in stool may occur in cases of e.g. inflammatory

bowel disease, celiac disease, food allergies, infections and abnormal intestinal flora,
polyps and tumors.

In patients with ulcerative colitis and Crohn’s disease, increased levels of alpha-1-
antitrypsin indicate disease activity and may be used for monitoring treatment.

Alpha-1-Antitrypsin for Alegria® – the advantages:

• sensitive indicator for intestinal inflammation and increased permeability of the gut
mucosa – non-invasive test

• rapid automated analysis – for single samples up to 30 different results in 90

minutes

• proven Alegria® instrumentation with automated “walk away” design

• extended portfolio of stool assays: alpha-1-antitrypsin, calprotectin, and

lactoferrin

• unrestricted sample selection, simultaneous determination of parameters for

autoimmune and infectious disease diagnostics in one single test run

®
parallel analysis of stool, serum, and CSF samples in a single Alegria run
