SYNOPSIS
Anya is a fashion model. Her job doesn’t require her to do
much, in fact it specifically requires her to do nothing, while others
do it for her. It may seem easy, but Anya finds doing nothing is
actually quite exhausting. Doing something, anything, is even
more difficult.

HYUN LEE
WRITER / DIRECTOR / PRODUCER

Hyun Lee is a Korean-Australian writer, director and photographer. She is

the writer and director of ASIAN GIRLS, a short film which was a recipient
of the Screen NSW: Emerging Filmmakers’ Fund. Executive produced by
Aquarius Films (LION, BERLIN SYNDROME), it was completed in mid 2017
and had its world premiere at SXSW, March 2018. Lee has a background
in art and fashion and has been commissioned work by institutions such
as the 4A Centre for Contemporary Asian Art and the Campbelltown Arts
Centre. She is currently based in Sydney and is developing her proof of
concept short film French Girls into a feature film.

MICHAEL FILOCAMO
DIRECTOR OF PHOTOGRAPHY

Michael Filocamo is a cinematographer currently completing his Masters

in Cinematography at the National Film and Television School in the UK.
After graduating from the Australian Film, Television and Radio School, he
gained production experience on feature film sets as a camera attachment
and technician on films such as Alien: Covenent (2016, Dir. Ridley Scott)
and Gods of Egypt (2016 Dir. Alex Proyas). He has also worked as a
cinematographer for Australian video artists Justin Balmain, Hossein
Ghaemi and Justene Williams, for artworks which have been exhibited in the
Sydney Biennale as well as the Museum of Contemporary Art’s Primavera.

Over many years working as a fashion

photographer, I never once encountered
a model who was a clichéd narcissistic
drama queen. They were always rather
ordinary teenage girls and young women
with varied personalities, interests and
aspirations. However, modelling is an
absurd profession where none of those
things matter. Aside from prostitution, it
is the only job in the world that requires
nothing of a woman except for the youth
and beauty of her body.

The alienation and restlessness

experienced by fashion models resonated
with me as a poignant expression of what
it is to be objectified and commodified as a
female. Our culture leads us to believe that
models have such fun and glamorous lives,
but to me their existence seemed closer
to that of a housewife, with similar hopes,
fears, disappointments and drudgery.

French Girls is not a critique of the fashion

industry, it is my letter of love and care
to women and girls who live in a world
that values their youth and beauty over
everything else they have to offer.
