I strongly disagree with the former statement because a video camera cannot
truthfully relate everything that is happening at a certain moment, as there is far more
to document in life than what we see and hear. A video camera can distort the reality
by turning it into something entirely different from what originally happened, thus
creating a situation that completely alienates and misleads the viewer. In contrast, a
written record can describe contemporary events in a structured and well defined
temporal sequence, providing specific details that can help the reader to acquire a
precise and realistic image of a defined event. A video can act as a supplemental
evidence for a certain experience but it cannot be considered as a better instrument
towards the exact documentation of human life than the written word.

In supporting my view I would like for you to consider the following:

Misleading videos lead to a distortion of reality

As a student of international relations, I became passionate about how social

interactions can influence a country image. That thirst for knowledge made me delve
into the understanding of the influence of media on people. A survey by the Bertrand
Institute showed that over 86% of the American population in the study that saw a
footage of an army fighting over Taliban forces thought it was a video of the U.S
army in Irak when this was actually recorded in the Kurdish civil war. I often use this
study to prove people how we can misunderstand a certain event if only take into
account what we see in a video without a proper written explanation of what we are
being shown.

; while looking to further my knowledge of this matter I was specially impressed by a

survey made by the French economist Arnauld Bassols who analyzed the impact of
that in his essay regarding reality tv “The Image: A Construction” specifies that the
human mind easily constructs fake concepts and images when this are only supported
by an unexplained footage and sound. A survey that analyzed the impact of reality TV
on people specified that 52% of the women who watched a certain reality show
focused on a given celebrity were subsequently depressed by how their life was no

A video camera can distort the reality turning it into something entirely different from what was originally

In order to fully understand contemporary reality adequately,

Our life has gone through great changes since the video camera came into being, which provides a
totally new and different way of recording life to the traditional written methods.
Compared with written records, video documentation is much less influenced by the one who took
record and the one who interprete it.
Another conspicuous advantage of video records is its integrity.
Yet it’s rash to say that video camera has already won over traditional written documents and become
the new domination of documentation field since video record is limited in several aspects.
We cannot say whether video camera or the written document is more important than the other in that
each one has its irreplaceable merits and values. Video camera offers the accurate and convincing
method of recording which can revive life in before, while traditional written document can provide a
more detailed and rational record in lower cost.
