GARDEN DESIGN:Elements,principles of landscaping

A designed landscape is an area of land which has been modified by

people for primarily aesthetic effect. The term is used by historians to denote
various types of site, such as gardens, parks, cemeteries, and estates. Such sites
are often protected for their historic or artistic value. A designed landscape may
comprise landform, water, built structures, trees and plants, all of which may be
naturally occurring or introduced.
Being a landscape artist , doesn't meen you are just a gardener, it is
something more than that. you will learn to look at things related to: a green
space, the relationship between man and nature, the importance of a green space
(besides the aesthetic), plants, and you will appreciate nature more.
The principles of landscaping are :proportion,order, repetition and
unity.Let`s analyze them in detail.
The proportion allows the different dimensions of objects within the
landscape, especially between plants and the built space.
Order gives us the possibility to create a beautiful balance using
symmetrical shapes or, on the contrary, to provide an informal ambience with
asymmetrical shapes.
The unit is an important notion for a landscape artist and is obtained
following a guideline set by a particular style or a well-defined theme.
The fourth principle, the repetition, allows the recognition of familiar
elements that repeat itself in that space. The scenes unfold in a harmonious
manner, without giving rise to striking contrasts for the eye of the viewer.
The indispensable elements in landscaping:scale and color.
The scale will define the relationship between the elements present in the
garden and those in the environment. Stairs, both garden and plant, will need to
be adapted not only to the available space but also to the height of the house.

Color is another crucial parameter because it gives life and creates garden
size. It can be used in relation to the vegetal space and also to the furniture or
architectural elements.
 Form and textures are also part of the basic elements. The form of
vegetation or furniture allows the maintenance of a theme. The texture, in turn,
appeals to the sense of touch and to the visual one: silvery, fluffy plants, airy or
exuberant leaves, or dancing in the wind, all come together to trigger the most
vibrant emotions.
I think there is more to learn about landscape design and landscaping
encompasses many areas and I will get a lot of information to help me in the
future .
