B. Electrostatic Discharge Introduction

Electrostatic Discharge (ESD) can damage or
impair electrical circuitry. It occurs when electrical
components are handled improperly. Always follow
ESD prevention procedures when removing or
replacing components. Ensure that the chassis is
electrically connected to ground using an ESD mat
or a ground wire.

Wear an ESD-preventive wrist strap, ensuring that
it makes good skin contact and is connected to an
unpainted surface on the chassis frame. If no wrist
strap is available, ground yourself by touching the
metal part of the chassis while handling a
component.

Protected Areas – An ESD protective area consists

voltage levels).

Electrostatic Discharge (ESD) – The rapid,

spontaneous transfer of electrostatic charge induced
by a high electrostatic field.

NOTE
Usually, the charge flows through a spark
between two bodies at different electrostatic
potentials as they approach one another.

Wrist Straps – A wrist strap should consist of a

band that fits snugly around the wrist cord to Persons wearing wrist straps should
connect the band to an earth bonding point. never touch live wires or connections, as
the wrist strap increases the risk of
electric shock.

Topic 1: Introduction to Electrotorque Plus “A” Digital Drives
TRAINING OBJECTIVE INSTRUCTOR ACTIVITY STUDENT INFORMATION
All motion motors have separate armature and
separate field windings receiving variable power
from independently controlled converters allowing
for ideal motion control.

The armature converters for all motions are a set of

two 6-pulse converters arranged in a back-to-back
configuration, which controls voltage and current
motoring and regeneration in both forward and
reverse directions. The SCRs in the converter are
the control point of the Electrotorque Control
System. The variable DC output of the converter AFM – Advanced Firing Module
depends on the gating signal depends on the gating
signal which is controlled by the operator and AFM
limits. Proportional feedback from the converter
output (Iafb) and motor speed (Vafb) modifies the
operator’s reference signal in the AFM control
assembly producing the proper gating signal for the
SCR’s.

The individual field converters for each motion are

single 6-pulse converters controlling the DC input
power to the field winding of all motion motors.
The output of the crowd and swing converters is
always fixed. The output of the hoist field converter
changes dynamically during normal hoisting and
lowering.

The output of the hoist field converter decreases, or

weakens, during the lowering portion of the dig
cycle.

16
P&H MINING EQUIPMENT – TRAINING INSTITUTE

Topic 1: Introduction to Electrotorque Plus “A” Digital Drives

TRAINING OBJECTIVE INSTRUCTOR ACTIVITY STUDENT INFORMATION
The output of the hoist field converter increases
during the hoisting portion of the dig cycle
producing an increase of available motor torque and
bail pull. This controlled field strengthening allows
the shovel to walk out of higher angled pit ramps.
