A s the first Indian born woman Member of Parliament in New Zealand, I am proud of the work that women before me did to make
a path for me to get elected. There are several interesting facts about New Zealand’s social journey since women got the vote
in 1893.
One hundred and twenty-five years ago this month when our Governor, Lord Glasgow, signed the new Electoral Act which allowed
women the vote, it was landmark legislation. Quite suddenly, the number of eligible voters in New Zealand doubled. When referring
to that breakthrough it’s important not to take anything away from the ‘Kiwi Suffragettes’, led by Kate Sheppard, who had presented
massive petitions to New Zealand’s Parliament calling on the leaders of the country to grant women the right to vote in Parliamentary
elections. It is fitting that Kate Sheppard’s momentous contribution to New Zealand’s history has been acknowledged for all to see
on our ten dollar note.
New Zealand was an early innovator – and it’s fair to say that our world leadership in women’s suffrage became a central part of
our image as a trail-blazing ‘social laboratory’. Indeed, most other democracies did not move forward to the point New Zealand had
reached in social advancement for another thirty years. Britain and the United States did not grant women the right to vote until after
the First World War. For New Zealand women the journey has been long and interesting and being patient has definitely been a virtue
here. It was not until 1919 that women got the right to stand for Parliament. Interestingly three women contested the General Election
that year but all failed. Forty years after women got the vote our first woman MP entered our Parliament.
As part of New Zealand’s trail blazing in this area, both race and gender took prominence, but as the old proverb says ‘good things
take time’. I was very proud to be the first Indian born MP in New Zealand’s Parliament in the 2014 General Election.
A

achievements with pride. We must pause to celebrate our successes, past and present. It is also an opportune time to acknowledge that
there is still more that needs to be done to advance the status of all women in New Zealand. We have a persistent gender pay gap, which
is currently 9.2 per cent.
The pay gap is worse for some women, including for Asian women. Women are still over-represented as victim/survivors of family
violence; under-represented on boards and other decision-making roles and perform the majority of unpaid, often unrecognised caring
work. Our demographics have changed dramatically. We have over 200 ethnicities represented in New Zealand, who collectively speak
over 160 languages. As an MP, I have mets ome amazing people whose paths I would not have otherwise crossed. Many of them are women
with incredible stories to tell. We have so many women who have fought – and continue to fight – for what they believe in and work to change
the structures that exclude ethnic women from various spheres.
As we celebrate 125 years of suffrage in New Zealand, I also pay tribute to women from ethnic communities in New Zealand who have fought to
break barriers, overcome challenges and pave the way for the next generation of ethnic women leaders.
I am a real believer of strength in diversity. As a younger, ethnic, female Kiwi-Indian, I’ve often been seen as different and diverse –
which is a strength or a weakness, depending on the situation and who is judging.
Today’s women in New Zealand are diverse. We are of different ages, sizes, colour, ethnicity, sexual identity, socio-economic
background and education status.
In this year, as we celebrate 125 years of Suffrage, we must ensure the lives of all women and girls are supported.
We must make sure this country supports everyone to have equal pay for work of equal value, for everyone be free from all forms of
violence - sexual, domestic, physical or emotional - to be empowered to study whatever they wish, and seek for whatever career they
want, and not be judged. Never judged for being a female. Never treated differently for being who you are in our society.
So, I hear you ask – what about men? Well, men and boys equally suffer from inequalities as well. We hold attitudes that suggest
men and boys are strong, must be fierce, fighters and protectors. That boy should not play with dolls. Or wear pink. Be the key decision
maker. These attitudes drive behaviours which are not helpful. They create a culture where masculinity is superior to femininity. By
encouraging this type of thinking, we elevate males to be superior to females. In today’s world that is not acceptable, and especially in
this country of Aotearoa New Zealand.
As the President of the National Council of Women New Zealand, the position Kate Sheppard held, we want everyone to be able to
do what they want - no matter their gender. And to do that, we all need to manage the intersecting issues of age, race, culture, religion,
ability, economic status, education level, sexual identity and gender.
We must consider as we learn at school, go to work, raise our children, be citizens of this country and serve our wider communities
in the work we do, to build a sense of belonging and participation for everyone - no matter the gender.
As Aotearoa changes in its demographic, the challenge for communities is how we can respond to this diversity. And that is a key
challenge for anyone fighting for equality today.

C elebrating women’s suffrage is at the heart of Hansa Naran, who currently serves as Treasurer, New Zealand Indian Central

Prior to this role, Ms Naran had been quietly engaged in work at the ground level for more than two decades, whereby connecting

She has been doing the ground work in organisations like Pukekohe Indian Association, Indian Association of New Zealand and

The issue of women empowerment is dear to her as she found early in life how women could be burdened with societal expectations
and responsibilities risking their progress in life when at 22 years she had to take care of her husband’s five siblings after losing her
in-laws. However, Ms Naran saw this as something which brought immense strength in her personality and motivating her permanently
to serve the wider community.
There is lot more to be achieved in bringing true equality for women in our society, especially in changing age-old attitudes.

in New Zealand, you’ll find more men than women when it comes to important decision-making roles. The domestic violence and elder
