PROBLEM 1

A lamp with unknown mass is supported by a rigid rod AO,

and two cables AC and AB. Knowing that the system is in
equilibrium and that the force in cable AB is 110 N,

(a) Draw and properly label the necessary free body

diagram to solve the problem.
(b) Determine the mass of the lamp, the forces in the
cables and in the pole.

PROBLEM 2

Two crates A and C have masses equal to 800 kg and 300 kg,
respectively. Crate A is lying on a horizontal surface while crate C
is on a 30o inclined surface. If the coefficient of static friction on
all surfaces is 0.20 except between crate A and the horizontal
surface and if the mass of wedge B is negligible,
(a) Determine the force P required to produce impending motion
of wedge B
(b) Determine the value of the coefficient of static friction between
crate A and the horizontal surface for it to be in impending
motion.

PROBLEM

Given the magnitude of the following forces, P = 20 kN, R = 15 kN, Q = 10

kN, and subject to the condition that “the moment of the resultant of forces P
and Q about the center is 10 kN-m clockwise”,
(a) determine the length s of the side of the regular hexagon
(b) the shortest distance between the center of the hexagon and the line of
action of the resultant force of P and Q
(c) the magnitude of force S such that the moment resultant of forces R and
S about the center is equal to 10 kN-m directed clockwise.

Hint: The regular hexagon is formed by joining six equilateral triangles side
by side.

PROBLEM 4

If the force exerted by cable LM on M is 200 N, and line OQ is three times as long as line QM, answer the following
questions:
(a) What is the magnitude and direction of the moment of the 200 N force about the origin?
(b) What is the moment of the force about line NQ?
(c) If W = 100 N and it is acting on point Q directed downwards parallel to the z-axis, what is the moment of W
about the cable LM?
