Pictograms
In the beginning, the concept of
communication was unheard of,
therefore, the way in which early men
shared ideas or convocations was
through he use of pictograms. These are
small images/pictures which tell a story,
this would be what is found with caves
or on the side of ancient rocks, lasting
from millions of years ago.
Internet
At this time, during the 1960s, the usage of
the internet was very limited. This is
primarily due to it being in military use
only. It was an essential mechanism that
allowed cross-distant communication if an
emergency erupted and coms weren’t
functioning.
Fibre Optics
1960s, the first fibre optic system was
introduced. They used glass fibres and sent
laser signals down the fibres, this could be
transmitted across vast distances and
allowed for extremely fast exchange of
information between multiple parties. This
shows how the advancement in technology
was progressing extensively.
Hieroglyphics
As time progressed, the Egyptian Empire
developed a more efficient and effective
method of communication. Similar to
Pictograms, Hieroglyphics were small
individual images that each represent a
letter or idea. This would have been seen
around the period of early 3000 BC.
Television
The development of the television in the
1950s became a world wide phenomenon.
The concept of picture broadcasting had
begun, despite being in black and white, it
was a revolutionary movement in the
understanding of technology of the time.
Advancing from the use of radios to being
able to receive visual content to watch in
your own home.
Cell Phone
1980s, this was the decade when the fully
independent cell phone was introduced. It
displayed a huge movement of technology,
that there was the capability of wireless
communications. Regarding media, this
illustrated that there was possibility of
greater developments that could be made.
It meant that there would finally be a
method of communication that would
allow portable contact to others, even if
just limited to calls.
Ancient Greece
During this time, the Greeks began to
introduce the concept of the alphabet.
This was the influence of what can be
found today, and results in an early form
of spoken communication.
Radio
There was an additional debate between
who invented the radio as well, between
Nikolai Telsa and Guglielmo Marconi.
However, the general concept of the
radio was that of broadcasting
intercommunications through the use of
radio waves which could travel great
distances at an faster rate than morse
code.
Computers and Internet
The 80s and 90s were decades that made
certain machinery suitable for public use.
The internet had not longer been restricted
to military use alone, coupled with the
computer being finally on sale to the public
for construction and use. This
revolutionised society as it meant that
there would be a more efficient method of
communication.

medium, thus transferring the ink.

both Alexander Graham-Bell and Elisha
Gray developed the first telephone that
became the inspiration for the
technology of todays model.
3G + 4G
As the models of phones had begun to
improve and develop to revolve more
around internet-required purposes instead
of just calling/texting, the concept of
internet broadband became an issue. 3G +
4G illustrate the ‘generations’ that the
broadband phase through. Modern day, 4G
is the latest and best model for internet
browsing due to its high speed connection
– with 5G in production.
Typewriter
Produced in 19th century, this machine is
a mechanical or electromechanical
machine for writing characters similar to
those produced by a printing press.
However, this item was more widely
used by the public and provided a more
efficient method for written
communication.
Morse Code
This machine, invented in 1829, was a
device that messaged a connected
participant a series of handmade signals
consisting of dots and dashes. This
became a popular method of
communication over vast distances such
as those in differing countries.
Smart Phones
With the introductory to this move
starting officially with Blackberry, the
concept of smart phones holds the
primary function of possessing a
touch screen control system. This
allows for more vast and complex
tasks to be carried out my the phone
as well as, being most common to buy
as of this day. From the development
to the ‘brick’ cell phone to ones which
fit in your pocket hand have far more
advanced settings, it can be
understood the progression of the
media and communications in society
today.
