Over the last 6 months the Sebago Geomatics Team has been busy collecting,
analyzing data, and creating 3D intelligent BIM models for a wide array of Portland CSO Project
clients and projects, most of which, require advantages that only our laser
scanning services can offer. From busy intersections, high speed highways,
inaccessible confined space structures, to intricate details of century old
window tracery, the versatility of Sebago’s laser scanning services deliver the
solution. To the point, the Sebago team has highlighted four projects which
demonstrate why (HDS) High Definition Surveying offers cost effective, risk
reducing, high precision, and decreased field time advantages over traditional
means and methods.

Peter Gomes Chapel Window Replacement
Summary
Laser scan and model two selected windows within the Peter Gomes Chapel (constructed
in 1908-1913) located on the Bates college campus. The subject rectangular window
was originally removed in pieces by a specialty precast contractor, from which latex
molds were formed and used to replicate the existing concrete window frame for
replacement. The window was completely removed and out of service for a duration of
4 months during the replication/ replacement process.
The overall goal of the high definition scanning and
subsequent modeling exercise is to expedite the
replication process and reduce the overall project
timeline. Sebago created a 3D Revit model which will be used to create a digital
replica mold. These recreated components will then be compared to the original
replica castings for variances. If minimal variances are observed during the trial
analysis, a new process flow for replication/ reproduction will be instituted. This
potential new workflow is expected to increase the mold process 2x, by removing
the requirement for negative casting molds of physically removed tracery pieces offsite, accompanied with the
cost and time saved associated with the use of single representative castings by digitally averaging the geometry
of several similar tracery pieces into a single mold type. The second laser scanned subject “arched” window
contains a separate set of complex geometric shapes and tracery. For this a prototype mesh was created for both
the interior and exterior tracery of the window, this data is intended for mold replication using a CNC program
and large sheets of molding foam to create the tracery mold pieces.

Advantages/Benefits
•  Expediting the mold process by both time and labor savings.
•  The window remains in place during replica fabrication rather than the
requirement of removal.
•  Unobtrusive data collection in small window of time, chapel can remain open while
data is collected.

Colby Sports Complex

Summary
High definition laser scan of field erected steel structure of the Colby Sports
Complex Field House- Venue #1. The resulting 3D -BIM Revit model was integrated
with the fabrication and design model to disseminate discrepancies in fabrication
and field erection from the base design model. The façade panel connection tabs
were installed on the steel structure during the steel fabrication, slight variations
in location of the tube steel tabs needed to be affirmed and or addressed on a
case by case basis. A total of 501 connection tabs were modeled on the perimeter of the structure. These variances
were addressed prior to fabrication and installation of the façade panels which are designed to fit within 1/8” tolerance.

Advantages/Benefits

and installation imperfections. Seth Goucher
