TEACHING EXPERIENCE
GRADUATE COURSES IN RHETORIC AND COMPOSITION – INSTRUCTOR
“Teaching with technology” ENGL 505t Purdue University (4 sections)
As a component of the year-long course mentoring new graduate students on how to teach
introductory composition, the technology mentor teaches a companion course on using technology
in the classroom. I taught each of the five mentor groups (of eight graduate students) weekly on
how to incorporate technology into assignments, discussions, and classroom practices. These
topics included visual rhetoric and new media theory, photo manipulation, audio/video
tools, writing with mobile devices, web design, social media, and game theory.

VISUAL COMMUNICATION AND DESIGN – INSTRUCTOR

“Design Principles Applied” IMS 254 Miami University (1 section)
In Design Principles Applied students study the principles of good design paired with production of
a number of well-designed documents. For my course I chose the broad theme of “accessibility” and
students pulled from sources on design thinking, universal design, and disability studies to create
user-centered projects.
Projects include: visual formstorming, infographics, accessibility product teardown + redesigns,
and a digital portfolio and showcase presentation
Technologies covered: Adobe Photoshop, Adobe Illustrator,

“Visual Rhetoric” ENG/IMS 411/511 Miami University (9 sections)

This course covers design theories, principles, and techniques for visual communication. Students
in the course explore how mediums, genres, text, images, layout, color, and typefaces can contribute
to persuasive and effective visual works. Additionally, with the inclusion of service-learning print
design project, students study universal design and designing for accessibility in a campus
environment.
Projects include: Infographics, instructions and documentation, service-learning print document
design, and creating interactive big data visualizations.
Technologies covered: Adobe Photoshop, InDesign, Illustrator, and Dreamweaver. Charts.js,
D3.js, R+, and Tableau Public.
Strantz | Vitae 5

“Digital Writing and Rhetoric” ENG/IMS 224. Miami University (6 sections)

In Digital Writing and Rhetoric students study the academic importance of digital spaces through
analysis, writing, and design. Student projects include creating infographics, podcasts, and video
essays centered around a sustained examination of a current issue or topic.
Projects include: proposals, data visualization projects, podcasts, and video essays.
Technologies covered: Adobe Photoshop, Adobe Illustrator, Audacity, Garageband, iMovie, and
Windows Movie Maker.

PROFESSIONAL AND TECHNICAL WRITING – INSTRUCTOR

“Multimedia Writing” ENGL 419 Purdue University (2 sections)
Interdisciplinary course consisting of computer graphics and professional writing majors. The course
broadly covers writing with multimedia and new media, and I designed a “Writing with Mobile
Technology” focused course that tasked students with composing through mobile devices. Students
examined networked writing practices, studied local communities, and programmed their own mobile
applications for research and usability testing within those communities.
Projects include: Network visualization, reports, instructions and documentation, usability testing,
Android application development.
Technologies covered: Adobe Photoshop, and InDesign. jQuery Mobile, Android Developer Studio.

“Introduction to Professional Writing” ENGL 306 Purdue University (2 sections)

This course is the theoretical introduction to the Professional Writing major for undergraduates.
Students learn the history of professional/technical communication, study rhetoric and ethics, and
explore what it means to be a professional writer. My version of the course included projects on
current topics in the field such as fair use, new media, ethics, and technology; using big data and
job listings to categorize the field; and conducting a workplace study and interview with a current
professional/technical writer.
Projects include: Technical ethnography, report on professional writing key concepts, workplace
site study and interview of professional writer.
Technologies covered: Adobe Photoshop, InDesign, and Dreamweaver.

“Technical Writing” ENGL 421 Purdue University (2 sections)

In this course technology, engineering, and sciences students (primarily) learn the basics of technical
writing for use in their future workplaces. My students studied rhetorical theory, ethics, and the history
of technical communication.
Projects include: Technical description, instructions and documentation, and workplace-focused
site study.

“Business Writing” ENGL 420 Purdue University (1 section)

Course for management, engineering, and sciences students. Students create writing projects
focused on workplace communication.
Projects include: Job documents, proposal, white paper, memo, and elevator pitch.

ONLINE PROFESSIONAL AND TECHNICAL WRITING – INSTRUCTOR

“Digital Writing and Rhetoric Online” ENG/IMS 224 Miami University (2 sections)
Distance version of the Digital Writing and Rhetoric course. As the instructor I kept in contact with
students regularly to work one-on-one on their projects. I also created video lectures, work guides,
and tutorials to help students master the technologies needed to create the products in the course.
Projects include: proposals, data visualization projects, podcasts, and video essays.
Strantz | Vitae 6

Technologies covered: Adobe Photoshop, Adobe Illustrator, Audacity, Garageband, iMovie, and
Windows Movie Maker.

“Technical Writing Online” ENGL 421y Purdue University (3 sections)

Distance education version of the Technical Writing course. As the instructor I made pedagogical
videos and guides, led online discussion blogs, and kept in consistent email communication with the
students to encourage participation and engagement with the course.
Projects include: Technical description, instructions and documentation, and workplace-focused
site study.

“Business Writing Online” ENGL 420y Purdue University (1 section)

Distance education version of the Business Writing course. As the instructor I
worked closely with students to help them create job documents, instructional materials, and
proposals for use within the context of their workplace or field.
Projects include: Job documents, proposal, white paper, memo,
and elevator pitch.

INTRODUCTORY COMPOSITION – INSTRUCTOR

“Digital Rhetorics” ENGL 106 Purdue University (4 sections)
This syllabus approach focuses on digital rhetoric and the current ways that students are
composing, including technology, access, literacies, game/play theory, and copyright/open-source
issues. In my version of the course students studied new media and digital production to create
user-focused writing projects. Students created video essays, public service proposals, digital archive
websites, writing wikis, infographics, and video game rhetorical analysis projects.

“Rhetorical Situations/Real Texts” ENGL 106 Purdue University (2 sections)

In RS/RT my students focused on genres, analyzing texts, and composing through rhetorical
appeals to logos, pathos, and ethos. Students worked on rhetorical analysis papers, proposals,
evaluations, narratives, rebuttals, portfolios, and research papers.
