abuse?
- What are the signs and symptoms of drug abuse?
- In your own opinion, what do you think are the reason why
people are taking drugs?
- Very good. Thus, the things that you’ve said are the common
misconceptions about drugs.
B. Establishing a - You must understand that it is not easy to know and feel the
purpose for the effects of drugs on the body. Effects are not always the same

with drug users. A small amount of a substance may create a
feeling of pleasure to a person but the same amount may cause
restlessness, stress or even immediate death to a person.
- The outcome of the use of drugs differs from a person to another.
Do you understand?
- We all know that giving interventions to people who were
addicted to illegal drugs is easier than putting an end to the
addiction. It’s easier said than done. So the only advice I can
give is to never try using illegal drugs.
C. Presenting - There are myths and misconceptions about drugs that can attract
examples/instances a person to use it.

- 1. Drugs of abuse improve memory. Is this true? And why?
- Very good. Drugs of abuse do not improve memory. Instead,
drugs of abuse shut down proper brain functioning.
- (The teacher will show the MRI of a person’s brain before and
the consumption of certain illegal drugs)
- Care to state the next misconception?
- Very good. What is the fact about it?
- Yes, since certain drugs of abuse stimulate the production of
stomach acids. Thus drugs of abuse do not help in the digestion
of food.
- The next misconception is “Drugs of abuse make a person bold
and brave. What is the truth behind this?
- Very good! The temporary courage brought about by taking
drugs is a dangerous one as it makes a drug user lose normal
judgment which is part of the person’s normal inhibition.
- Any questions? Shall we proceed?
- Next misconception is “Drugs of abuse remove life’s problems
and worries”. Who can justify this statement?
- Very good. In fact some of the drug users will tell you that. But
the truth is that it worsen life’s problems and worries.
- Class, problems are made for you to become stronger and wiser.
We experience problems because we are human. When we face
our problems, we are motivated to make solutions to address it.
Some problems needs wise decisions. Drugs are not an escape
from your problems. Instead it becomes a prison and it messes
up with the way you think thus worsening your problems.
- Is it clear class? The next misconception is that “drugs of abuse
heat up the body”. Is this true?
- Very good. This is dangerous class because the consumption of
certain illegal drugs causes hyperthermia which makes the body
lose heat faster.
D. Discussing new - Let’s discuss the profile of a drugs abuser. On page 295 the
concepts and Dangerous Drugs board enlisted the following sign and
practicing new skills

symptoms of a drug abuse. Get a partner and discuss with your
partner the following signs and symptoms.
- (After 5 minutes)
- Are you familiar with some of the signs and symptoms?
- Very good. Now, if you happen to know someone who had this
signs and symptoms, how are you going to help that person?
- ( The teacher will give some scenarios and will ask her students
how they will give interventions about it)
E. Discussing new - Moving on, Drugs of abuse have short term and long term
concepts and effects in your health. Now we are going to discuss the harmful

- What are the gateway drugs? What are the examples of gateway
drugs?
- (The teacher will show her students some pictures of the effects
of alcohol)
- Very good. The infamous alcohol have both short-term effects
and long-term effects. Who can state the sort term effects?
- Very good. And how about the long term effects?
- Very good. Your health is very much a stake in the abuse of
alcohol especially your internal organs such as the liver, heart
and colon.
- The next gateway drug tobacco. Who can discuss the short-term
and long-term effects of these?
- (The teacher will show pictures of the lungs of a chain smoker)
- Very good. I know you are familiar with these effects. Who have
something to add?
- Are you familiar with the depressants?
- Very good. The depressants are also known as “downers”, it
slows down the central nervous system. In the medical field,
depressants are also called sedatives which are used to treat
anxiety, metal disorders like insomnia.
- What are the types of depressants that you know?
- Very good. Who can discuss the short-term and long-term
effects of depressants?
- Very good. The next type of drugs is the stimulants which is the
opposite of the depressants. They are also known as the “uppers”
or “speeders” because what they do is to stimulate/activate the
central nervous system. What does it do to your body?
- Very good. Who can discuss the short-term and long-term
effects of stimulants?
- The next type of drug is narcotics which is also known as
painkillers. They induce sleepiness. Narcotics are administered
to patients with mental problems. They are also given to cancer
patients to relieve severe pain.
- What are the example of narcotics?
- Very good. (Name of student) please discuss the short-term and
long-term effects of narcotics.
- Very good. Are you familiar with the hallucinogens?
- What does it do to your body?
- Examples of hallucinogens are: LSD, psilocybin and mescaline.
What are the short-term effects and the long-term effects of
hallucinogens?
- Very good. Now for the last type of drug we have inhalants.
Inhalants are found in common household chemical products.
Inhalants are huffed or sniffed. The effect of inhalants are same
with the effects of alcohol intoxication.
- What are the short-term and long-term effects of inhalants?
- Very good. Is there any clarification?
F. Developing Mastery - Now that you are familiar with the short-term and long-term
(Leads to Formative effects of drugs. Can you discuss the effects of drugs in the
Assessment 3) following domains: (1.) self; (2.) family; (3.) school and (4.)
community? In five minutes do this in your notebooks.
