TANGHALANG PILIPINO’S “BALAG AT ANGUD”

An original Filipino musical written by Palanca Award-winner Layeta Bucoy, with


music by Dodjie and Upeng Fernandez of PATATAG fame and direction by Audie
Gemora. Opening Tanghalang Pilipino’s 32nd Theater Season, Balag at Angud
dramatizes the life of installation artist Junyee (Luis Yee Jr.) and his determined
struggle to express his passion for the transformation of the human person and his
environment.

MPO OPUS 20: TRAILBLAZING MUSIC EXCELLENCE

The Manila Philharmonic Orchestra celebrates its 20th Anniversary with a


concert that renders classical pieces with a modern twist! The first part of the
concert showcases significant classical pieces that have defined the early
beginnings of the MPO and features Dean Raul Sunico. The second half will
reminisce how the orchestra has evolved into something more relevant and
instrumental in bringing symphonic music closer to the hearts of the Filipino
people by pioneering out-of–the-box ideas like the Philharmonic in Jeans
Concert series. This portion will also highlight the orchestra’s current spirited
involvement in the local musical theater and concert scenes and will feature the
UST Singers and Asia’s Nightingale, Ms. Lani Misalucha.

KABATAANG GITARISTA (KG) 6TH ANNIVERSARY RECITAL

A performance of solo classical, Filipino and popular works as well as ensemble pieces to be performed by
members of the Kabataang Gitarista, a classical guitar ensemble of public junior high school students in
Manila, Pasay and Parañaque under the tutelage of Maestro Jose Valdez. Members from the KG Bicol
Chapter under the tutelage of Mr. Angelo Inting will also be performing for the first time at the CCP.

TRIPLE THREATS: THE MUSICAL THEATER COUPLES
“MR. & MRS. SEÑA”

Through the years the personal and professional collaboration of musical theater couple Robert Seña and
Isay Alvarez-Seña has given birth to wonderful pieces of theater. From their youth as part of the original cast
of Miss Saigon artists, to their current status as musical theater artists, producers and teachers, the concert
will trace a musical journey taken together filled with growth, love and passion.

BALLET PHILIPPINES’ “CARMINA BURANA”

Ballet Philippines opens the 49th Season with one of its most unparalleled pieces, Alice Reyes’ Carmina
Burana. The performance highlights the power, drama, passion and emotion of Carl Off’s magnum opus
taken from 13th century Goliard poetry. One of the most opulent and grandiose pieces to be staged, Carmina
Burana, is a captivating sensorial experience that interpret sentiments of joy, drunken elation and religious
satire through bodies on stage, moving in unison to create haunting imagery. The ABS CBN Philharmonic
Orchestra accompanies the piece with a beautiful rendition of Carl Off’s masterpiece under the baton of
maestro Gerard Salonga. Ethereal yet powerful vocals by the Madrigal Singers will fill the theatre with
melodic whispers, hymnal screams and jubilant shouts. The program will feature choreographic gems from
the company’s dynamic repertoire including, former Ballet Philippines Principal Dancer and Premiere
Danseur of the Royal New Zealand Ballet, Brando Miranda’s vigorous, lively and spirited, Vivaldi Concerto,
along with American director-choreographer, Norman Walker’s first piece for Ballet Philippines, Season Of
Flight, sharing the stage with the premiere of a new piece from one of BP’s talented young choreographers,
Ronelson Yadao.

For its second year, the Festival of Arts and Ideas engages artistic expression with issues concerning
mental health conditions, resilience and healing. The festival’s main components include an exhibit
inspired by the Julia Buencamino bench project, a paper crane tree installation, film screenings,
workshops, performances, poetry readings, forums and other interactive activities. Be part of this
festival and help overcome the stigma of mental illness and shed light on the struggle with mental
conditions.

PPO’s 45th ANNIVERSARY CONCERT SERIES I:

The PPO begins its 45th Anniversary celebration and opens its 36th Concert Season with a selection of classics
that include Stravinsky’s Greeting Prelude (Happy Birthday), Rossini’s Semiramide Overture, Johann Christian
Bach’s Sinfonia in Bb, Ravel’s Piano Concerto in G Major and Daphnis et Chloe Suite No. 2 under the baton of
Yoshikazu Fukumura. Featured soloist is internationally-renowned concert pianist Monique Duphil, hailed by

THE BUTTERFLY LOVERS

Philippine Cultural College Chinese Orchestra will once again showcase a grand performance of various
classical Chinese pieces such as “The Dance of the Yi Tribe” as well as famous themes from the literary works
“The Legend of the White Snake” and “The Butterfly Lovers” to be performed by distinguished world-class solo
artists accompanied by the PCC Cultural College Chinese Orchestra under the baton of Simon Kong Su Leong.
Leong is a crossover musician who has devoted his life to composing, arranging, conducting, performing,
organizing and teaching Chinese traditional music. “The Butterfly lovers,” fondly called the “Chinese Romeo
and Juliet,” is a tragic love story of two star-crossed lovers whose forbidden love led them to reconcile only as
butterflies after their deaths. Duan Ai Ai, a National Class One Musician noted for her delicate and expressive
playing, will be performing this original violin concerto on the erhu.

The Government Choral Competition is one of the highlights of the upcoming 118th Philippine Civil Service
Anniversary which aims to showcase musical creativity of talented government employees, promote Filipino
culture and arts through choral singing, and inculcate in the minds of public servants a culture of excellence
in public service.

PAGBABALIK TANAW SA UNANG HARI NG BALAGTASAN

This onstage extravaganza is a repeat staging of the very successful production which
celebrates the life and works of Filipino poet Jose Corazon de Jesus, also known as
Huseng Batute, and his contributions to Philippine literature, music, and culture, as
narrated by renowned theater actors and performers. Pagbabalik-Tanaw features
poetry readings by leading actors, contemporary dance performances, classical
renditions of kundimans, ventriloquism, traditional balagtasan and modern fliptop,
and other artistic performances.

CCP GALA: KING, THE CONCERT
(Tribute to National Artist Lucrecia R. Kasilag)

The CCP commemorates the Centennial Birth Anniversary of former CCP President and Artistic Director,
National Artist for Music Lucrecia R. Kasilag, with a grand showcase of her prominent works to be performed
by guest artists led by the CCP resident companies: Philippine Philharmonic Orchestra, Ballet Philippines,
Bayanihan Philippine National Dance Company, Philippine Ballet Theatre, Philippine Madrigal Singers and
Tanghalang Pilipino. Tita King was an educator, composer, performing artist, administrator and cultural
entrepreneur of national and international caliber. She made it her personal mission to sharpen the Filipino
audience’s appreciation of music. She worked to discover the Filipino roots through ethnic music and merged
this with Western influences – an approach has inspired many Filipino composers to follow her lead and
experiment. She dared to incorporate indigenous Filipino instruments in orchestral productions.

Praised for his beautiful lyric voice with agility and color, capable of conveying broad range of characters.
Described as singing “superbly with beautiful legato, a regal tenor”, Mr. Espiritu has been steadily
establishing himself as an accomplished bel canto tenor and has had success with lyric repertoire as well. He
has portrayed a wide array of leading tenor roles in the most prestigious opera houses in different parts of
the world. Mr. Espiritu will also conduct a voice masterclass for students in the collegiate level.

PHILIPPINE BALLET THEATRE’S CINDERELLA

PPBT presents a story about a poor orphan who turns into a princess
with the help of a fairy godmother. The well-loved story is by French
choreographer Jean Paul Comelin and staged by PBT’s artistic
director Ronilo Jaynario to the music of Russian composer Sergei
Prokofiev.

visionary and innovative choreographers of the era: Bam Damian, Denisa Reyes and Alden Lugnasin with
each presenting two identifying and definitive contributions to BP’s incomparable repertoire.

fully choreographed production numbers should be expected.

BAKA NAMAN HINDI

This translation of Georges Feydeau’s “A Flea in Her Ear” by Virgilio “Beer” Flores, with the direction of
Dennis Marasigan, brings back the rollicking sex comedy popular in the Early 1980s. In this farcical French
play set in France at the turn of the 20th Century, a woman, suspecting her lawyer husband of having an
affair, plots to catch him in the act.

AKAPELLA OPEN INTERNATIONAL 2018 (FINALS NIGHT)
Competition: choral music, contemporary acapella competition

Deemed to be the first of its kind in the country, Akapela Open is a competition among local and
international groups for contemporary a cappella ensemble singing. Conceived in 2013 by Ryan Cayabyab as
a national competition for contemporary acapella, Akapela Open is also a movement to promote the love for
contemporary acappella singing and the appreciation for vocal harmony performance; to provide a venue for
new arrangements of Philippine and international contemporary vocal music; to provide growth experiences
for singers and arrangers; and to cultivate a community of contemporary a cappella singers. Akapela Open
has produced winners who have since joined international competitions and have won top prizes from these.

TRICKS AND MUSICAL TREATS, A PPO FAMILY CONCERT

The CCP celebrates Halloween with a special production for children of


all ages featuring the Philippine Philharmonic Orchestra. Pre-concert
activities include an instruments petting zoo where children can try to
play different orchestral instruments. There will also be trick-or-treat
and other lobby activities where loot bags of surprises are given away.
Children are encouraged to come in their best costumes!
