Course Objectives
 To understand the basic knowledge of automated manufacturing systems.
 To acquire knowledge on controlling techniques used in industrial automation.
 To develop and analyse the mathematical model of plant automation using simulation
environment.

Course Outcome (Cos)

The student will be able


1. To identify the potential areas and need of automation in industries.
2. To identify the suitable automation hardware for the given application.
3. To translate and simulate a real time activity using modern tools and discuss the
benefits of automation.
4. To select suitable major control techniques required to automate a process or an
activity
5. To recommend appropriate modelling and simulation tool for the given
manufacturing application.

INTRODUCTION
Automation in Production System, Principles and Strategies of Automation, Basic Elements of an
Automated System, Advanced Automation Functions, Levels of Automations. Flow lines & Transfer
Mechanisms, Fundamentals and analysis of Transfer Lines.

UNIT II 9 Hours
MATERIAL HANDLING AND IDENTIFICATION TECHNOLOGIES
Overview of Material Handling Systems, Principles and Design Consideration, Material Transport
Systems, Storage Systems, Overview of Automatic Identification Methods.

UNIT III 9 Hours


AUTOMATED MANUFACTURING SYSTEMS
Components, Classification and Overview of Manufacturing Systems, Manufacturing Cells, GT and
Cellular Manufacturing, FMS, FMS and its Planning and Implementation. Quality Control Systems:
Traditional and Modern Quality Control Methods, SPC Tools.

UNIT IV 9 Hours
CONTROL TECHNOLOGIES IN AUTOMATION
Industrial Control Systems, Process Industries versus Discrete- Manufacturing Industries, Continuous
Versus Discrete Control, Computer Process and its Forms, Automatic Process Control.

UNIT V 9 Hours
MODELING AND SIMULATION FOR PLANT AUTOMATION
Introduction, need for system Modelling, Building Mathematical Model of a Plant, Modern Tools &
Future Perspective.

SELF STUDY
Cement, Thermal, Water Treatment & Steel Plants. Case Studies on Cement, Thermal, Water
Treatment & Steel Plants applications.
