President Rodrigo Duterte on Sunday warned rice hoarders that he would not
hesitate to use emergency powers and ask the military to act against them if he
catches any irregularity amid the ongoing effort to solve the rice crisis in
Zamboanga City, Basilan, Sulu, and Tawi-Tawi.

“Now, I’m just warning the traders… do not force me to resort to emergency
measure,” Duterte said in a press conference at the Ninoy Aquino International
Airport (Naia) Terminal 2 before leaving for an official visit to Israel and Jordan.

Duterte stressed that he will even ask the military and police to go after rice
hoarders and raid their warehouses.

Senator Sherwin Gatchalian wants “crooked” traders taking advantage of the

state of calamity in Zamboanga to be dealt with to the “fullest extent of the law.”

On Thursday, Gatchalian called on the Department of Trade and Industry to

immediately exercise its enforcement powers to put a stop to alleged rice hoarding
and profiteering, which is causing prices to rise in the city.

“Crooked traders who are using the state of calamity to make unconscionable
extra profits should be dealt with to the fullest extent of the law,” Gatchalian said
in a statement.

to stop hoarding NFA rice

National Food Authority (NFA) director Rex Estoperez called on the public to
stop hoarding NFA rice to give others the chance to buy the cheap rice.

Estoperez said some individuals line up and buy NFA rice to market them in their
stores for a higher price than the suggested retail price of P27 to P32 per kilogram.

“Baka lahat sa isang pamilya luminya para sa bigas [tapos] baka naman may mga
nagbabayad lang ng mga pipila para maipon (Maybe all members of their family
are lining up to buy NFA rice, or maybe they are paying people to line up for
them),” he said in an interview with Radyo Inquirer 990 AM on Monday.
