The Hydrological Cycle

In specific objective number 3 of the CXC CAPE Environmental Studies Syllabus requires us to outline the
importance of biogeochemical cycles. For this presentation, we will be exploring the hydrological cycle more
commonly known as the water cycle.

Water plays a vital role in the biosphere of the Earth. All life is dependent on it and it has an endless range of uses
in the domestic, agricultural, industrial, recreational, institutional and commercial economic sectors. Therefore,
we can conclude that it is an invaluable natural resource but in order to fully understand its importance we must
look at the properties of water and how its properties permit it to perform its many functions of importance. This
is summarized in the table below.

Now as we have seen from the table, water has many distinct properties that allow it to be of vital importance to
the environment. However, another imperative concept of water is its renewability, which allows it to be in
constant supply and useful at all times.

Let us explore the renewability of water through the water cycle.

Above shows a simple diagram of the water cycle. You can easily reproduce this in your notebooks or in
examinations if ever asked to do so. We kindly ask that you turn your attention to the PowerPoint presentation as
we look at the various processes of the water cycle.

Have you enjoyed our presentation? Well we hope you did and that you are better informed about this important
biogeochemical cycle. On the following page we have taken the liberty to construct a table that you can summarise
the knowledge you have gained about the water cycle processes.

NB: If you will like to obtain a hardcopy of today’s presentation for future reference or the link of the video shown
please speak with Treasure, Kandice , Mariella or Siddiqa and we will be happy to kindly assist you.
