ABOUT THE OFFICE AND THE ARCHITECT

ARUN NALAPAT ARCHITECTS

(Bangalore)
Started in Bangalore in 1996 by Jyothi and Arun
Nalapat, the practice has grown into a medium
sized firm doing a wide variety of projects in several
countries.
They believe that each project is a singularity, built
on a unique site, for a particular client at a specific time. It will never
happen again. Each project, a beginning, a movement towards an
unknown end. The approach, while informed by our previous projects, is
not guided or limited by them.
Along the way the practice has won numerous awards and has been
recognized in various fora for design excellence. Apart from this, the firm
has had the continued support of some clients almost since inception,
who have nurtured us by their continued trust and made sure we grow
with them.
The firm specializes in health-care and institutional design and have
successfully completed quaternary care hospitals in India and Middle
East.

EXPERIENCE AS TRAINEE

My experience at Arun Nalapat Architects has been excellent with a

comprehensive understanding and learning of architecture. The firm
consisted of experts in multiple fields whose insights will help throughout
my architecture journey in college and beyond.

I was assigned tasks that included creating design solutions &

proposals, identifying seating heights for an auditorium & theatre, create
decisive parking layouts with corresponding circulation on top levels,
layout design to provide better quality views for audience, using software
techniques to check solar gain in 3D model to comment on projections,
which proved to decisive in concept and design development of various
projects to be realized in the firm.

At many occasions, I got the opportunity to discuss my proposals with

principal architects, including Ar. Arun Nalapat, yielding me a direct
insight into the process of sensible design language for different
contexts.

While working on sanction and tender drawings, for RGS school and
SNIST respectively, Ar. Prashanth N. taught the processes necessary to
execute a design on site, construction details, phasing and management
of large scale projects. With Jyothi Ma’am, the trainees had sessions
which included giving inputs on development of firms as well as personal
development of trainees through personal discussions with focus on
their weakness and strength.

Skills/software/activities practiced:
 ShadeX to calculate heat gain for bedroom & courtyard space in
SkechUp.
 How to read solar angle of a place with the given sun path diagram
 Using vision lines to design auditorium & theatre racking.
 Parking grid design to accommodate cars and buses. Using the
same grid to plan a theatre, enveloped by a 450 seat auditorium.
 Live case study of Jagriti Theatre, Bangalore.
 Planning of performing arts center.
 Massing for performing arts centre. Using locally available laterite
stone.

experience in the field of architecture. I developed a strong knowledge
in the auditorium and theatre typology, after being an integral part of
design process. Learning details and planning by the architects gave me
confidence to tackle problems of construction and design.
This internship period will prove to be a necessary nourishment to excel
as a professional architect.I am in debt to my seniors as well as my co-
interns for providing me with this highly rich opportunity and exchange of
healthy ideas. I understood the impact and architect can make in the
society with their sense of space, elements and details which can define
lifestyles.
