PRESIDENT’S REPORT
On a very warm June 7th, one of the
largest graduating classes in recent
memory marched down the aisle
of St. Ignatius Loyola Church to
receive their diplomas. For the 141 of
our newest alumni, it was the usual
bittersweet moment. Four years of
life on 84th Street taught them a lot
about learning, and even more about
friendship. I have taken to updating
the rather infamous line older alumni
have reported hearing early in their
Regis careers: “Look to the right of you and to the left of you. One of
your will not be here next year.” Decades after deciding that student
retention was a good thing, I now tell freshmen: “Look to the right
of you and to the left of you. One of those guys will probably be in
your wedding party.” Freshmen seem a bit puzzled; the graduates
walking into St. Ignatius understand exactly what I mean. Bonding
is part of a single-sex education. The unusually strong Regis bond
comes partly from traveling so far to be together each day, partly
from spending so much serious activity time together (winning all
those Speech and Debate championships requires an enormous
number of weekend days!), partly from sharing retreats and service
projects together, and partly from simply challenging each other to
work as hard as possible in and out of the classroom. Graduation is
a celebratory highpoint, but also a real moving on and moving away
experience.
Brian Cross ’08, the winner of the Heitefuss Award this year,
gave the address for the graduates. You can read the whole speech
on the Regis Web Site. Brian spent part of his speech imagining
graduates returning for their reunion, and part of it serves as a good
reminder:
I love Regis. I think that almost all of us do. But I hope
and pray that when we come back here in twenty five years,
we don’t talk about how the best years of our lives actually
happened twenty five years ago… No matter how sad we
may be to leave Regis, each of us knows somewhere inside
us that it would be an even more tragic thing to discover
that our lives indeed peaked when we were eighteen years
old. In fact, I would say that the Regis education at its
most successful would give one the ability to embrace the
fact that there’s just so much more out there to experience,
to savor, to improve, to learn, to serve, and to love.

No matter how wonderful the Regis experience is, the school’s real
mission is to prepare competent and dedicated men to leave Regis
and be of great service. Actually, one of the most interesting parts
of my job is to get to meet so many Regians so many years after
they have graduated and hear stories of the great things that Regis
prepared them to do later in life. Quality educational preparation
remains all too rare; such preparation for vision and mission is what
we try to provide year in and year out.
Along the lines of Brian’s comments, it is a great pleasure to celebrate
with Dr. Anthony S. Fauci ’58 as he receives the Presidential Medal
of Freedom for his many years of service in public health and for his
internationally acclaimed work in AIDS research. We had a bit of a
jump on the President by giving Tony the John Francis Regis medal
in 2006 for his example of service. An essay he wrote for NPR’s This
I Believe series sums up a goal worthy of emulation for all Regians: “I
believe I have a personal responsibility to make a positive impact on
society. I’ve tried to accomplish this goal by choosing a life of public
service. I am a physician and a scientist confronting the challenge of
infectious diseases. I consider my job a gift. It allows me to try and
help alleviate the suffering of humankind.” He credits both Regis
and Holy Cross for the intellectual training to achieve this goal of
service. It seems to me that this honor to Dr. Fauci, as well as Brian’s
inspirational words at graduation, provide some excellent reflection
on what it means to be “successful.” Against a societal norm of fame
and fortune, we hold up a model of loving service in return for the
talents and opportunities God has given us. Thank you for the many
ways you live that in your lives. Thank you also for helping to ensure
that a fresh crop of young men emerge from St. Ignatius each June
intent on doing the same.

MESSAGE FROM THE ALUMNI BOARD

The alumni board has been tasked with developing means, programs
and activities that serve, support and foster the overall alumni body.
These efforts can take many shapes and forms – from alumni retreats
to young alumni basketball. I wanted to take this time to highlight
another opportunity for alums to serve the overall alumni body,
which, based on my experience, pays benefits for all those involved.

As many of you already know, Regis seniors
have the opportunity to spend their third
trimester out of the classroom by participating
in either a Christian Service project or business
internship. For the last couple of years, my
company has taken on a Regis senior as an
intern during the spring trimester. Each time I
have found the experience to be a very positive
one for all involved. I by no means want to
draw support away from the very valuable and
enriching experience of a Christian Service
project, which is how I actually spent my third
trimester. However, I wanted to highlight the
benefits that I have seen from the internship
program.
I must say that when I got the call a couple
of years ago from Mr. Walsh to take on an
intern, I was a bit hesitant. The prospect of
bringing on someone with absolutely no office
experience while at the same time agreeing
to Mr. Walsh that I would come up with a
meaningful, “real work” project for the intern,
seemed like it would be more trouble than
benefit. I was completely wrong.
I work in New York for a privately-
held Investment Banking firm, WR
Hambrecht+Co. Over the past couple of years,
we have had several Regis interns. Our most
recent intern was this past spring when a Regis
senior named Paul Shabazian spent several
months with us working across a variety of
projects. Our firm takes on interns throughout
the year from a variety of well-regarded colleges
and universities. I must say that, aside from
not having some of the academic financial
background that college business students have,
Paul performed as well any intern that we have
had and it continued a pattern of activity that
every Regis intern we have had has displayed.
I think the benefits to the students are
tremendous. The intern works four full days
a week (the fifth is spent at Regis) from mid-
February through mid-May. In that time, they
gain real-world business experience generally
unavailable to someone their age. It also helps
them figure out how they may want to focus
their studies during college as well as jump
start their efforts to find meaningful summer
employment during their college years.
However, for purposes of this article, I
wanted to draw attention to the benefits to
the “hiring” alum. First, you are pretty much
assured you are getting a smart, dedicated
mind. Knowing that the intern is from Regis
does set them apart from your typical high
school student. The “Frank Walsh” stamp of
approval is a stronger sign of quality than most
headhunters and Dan Dougherty is better than
a professional background check.
Secondly, these guys are flexible and can be
thrown at a variety of projects. The “hiring”
alum needs to make a commitment to give the
intern a meaningful assignment. But that can
take a number of forms. For example, Paul
rolled his sleeves up and dove into a several
research projects that “we could never really get
around to.” In this day and age, a Regis senior
is going to be far more adept at maneuvering
his way around databases and computer
systems than the majority of alums.
The process for bringing on an intern is
extremely straightforward. They are not
allowed to be paid, which removes on major
hurdle for getting “corporate” approval for
them. The paperwork that the alum must
complete is minimal. The majority of the
effort is in identifying a project for the intern
to sink their teeth into. For the majority of us
overburdened workaholics, that should not be
a challenge.
Finally, the real benefit I see to this program is
more subtle than those mentioned above yet,
ultimately, more important. Most of us will
agree that the health and vitality of the alumni
community is a critical component to the long
term mission of Regis. One way to ensure that
health and vitality is by continuing to actively
welcome recent grads into this community.
I believe that the program provides an
opportunity to help build a bridge between
life as a student and life as an alumnus. These
students can see quite clearly the strong, active
alumni family that continues to serve Regis.
Over recent years, the alumni body has come
together through such forums as the Regis
Business Network and Regis Bar Association
in order to help ourselves professionally.
Perhaps both of these networks could provide
valuable forums for identifying internship
opportunities? I encourage those interested in
this program to reach out to Frank Walsh to
discuss it further. It does not take much and
the benefits will far outweigh the costs.

REGIANS MEET POPE BENEDICT XVI REGIS ALUMNI BOARD

On Saturday, April 19, more than 22,000 young
people gathered at St. Joseph’s Seminary
(Dunwoodie) in Yonkers for a youth rally with Pope
Benedict XVI. In addition to the more than thirty
Regians who traveled there together with Mr. John
Connelly ‘56 and Fr. Anthony Andreassi, C.O., to
represent Regis, at least a dozen more Regians
went with their parish youth groups. However,
two Regis sophomores played a special role in
the day’s activities. Ryan Mowbray ‘10 of Staten
Island was selected to appear on stage with the
Holy Father as part of a group of young people
who read brief biographies of important Catholic
New Yorkers, including several saints, and then
presented the Pope with a gift representative
of each woman and man. After offering a few
words about one of these New Yorkers, Ryan
was presented to the Pope who gave him a set
of rosary beads. Brian Dunlop ’10 of the Bronx
was part of a small chorus who sang to the Holy
Father in German and then he, too, was presented
to Pope Benedict. Since Brian studies German
at Regis, he was able to speak to the pope in his
native tongue.

Regis Centerfielder Overcomes
Size, Diabetes to Become a Star

CONEY ISLAND, N.Y. -- On a cool,
crisp day at Keyspan Park, Tony Negrin
digs in for his first at bat amidst the jeers
of the opposing team.
Come on shorty, you ain’t got nothing.
Easy out. Easy out.
The opposing pitcher, a towering figure,
stares down Negrin -- all 5-foot-6 of him.
On the first pitch, Negrin swings and laces
a grounder to the third baseman. Racing
down the line, he beats out the throw and
offers a mischievous smile to the fans,
perhaps foreshadowing his attempt to steal
second base on the very next pitch.
Last spring, the speedy Negrin swiped 27
bags in 30 games, while sporting a .452
batting average in the leadoff spot for
Manhattan’s Regis High. This season he’s
hitting .430 with 24 steals. The senior
captain and center fielder from New
Rochelle, N.Y., refuses to slow down --
spending his offseason as the starting point
guard and co-captain for Regis’ basketball
team. And while many are amazed at
just how passionately Negrin competes --
most don’t know that for the last 12 years
Negrin has been combating a disease that
robs many children of the ability to lead
normal lives, let alone excel in sports.
When Negrin was just 6 years old, he
underwent a routine checkup and was
diagnosed with Type-1 diabetes. “The test
results came back and my mother came
into the room crying,” he says. “I had to
be rushed to the hospital.”
As a child, Negrin did not initially
understand how his life had changed,
but after spending a week in the hospital,
he realized that this sickness wasn’t
something that was just going to go away.
When doctors failed to even mention the
prospect of playing sports in their initial
conversations with him and his family,
Negrin began to fear the worst: “I figured
that baseball and basketball were done
with,” he says.
In such heartbreaking times, Negrin’s
family and friends remained supportive
and were dedicated to making Negrin’s
childhood as normal as possible. “We
allowed Tony to face his disease straight
on,” says his mother, Gina. “When in a
public place, if Tony had to take an insulin
shot or prick his finger to check his blood
sugar, it was done. We never allowed him
to feel sorry for himself.”
By teaching their son to accept his
affliction, Negrin’s parents instilled within
him the confidence he needed to excel in all
facets of life, including academics. During

his senior year at Regis -- an all-scholarship, tuition-free

Jesuit school -- Negrin balanced baseball, basketball and
his academics while maintaining a 3.8 GPA.

And although Negrin seems to handle his condition

with ease, living with diabetes is a daily struggle in
more ways than one. “It’s not just a finger prick,”
Negrin says. “I have to eat right and I have to sacrifice
sometimes going out if my blood sugar is too high.”

For a teenager, the little things -- like hanging out

with friends -- become more complicated. Negrin
learned from the very beginning that diabetes is not
something that can be overlooked for any period of
time. During games, one can spot Negrin hustling to
the dugout in between innings to test his blood sugar.

Even so, Negrin is quick to point out that diabetes

has not held him back athletically. “I look at it as a
challenge,” Negrin says. “I figure that for some reason
I was given this challenge and I have to prove people
wrong.”

Another aspect of Negrin’s game is the work ethic and

responsibility that he has acquired from managing
his condition. “He’s got excellent leadership ability
because he’s also the most diligent guy in terms of
working out, taking care of himself,” says Regis
baseball coach Dan Dougherty ‘86, “and he’s able to
build great relationships with his teammates.”

to be seen, but where Negrin will play next is not.
He has accepted a full scholarship to play baseball
at Division I LaSalle University. In college, Negrin
not only hopes to excel on the field but also has
aspirations to become a doctor. Says Negrin, “Ever
since I got diabetes, medicine has been my thing and I
have always wanted to be a doctor.”

base percentage. He stole 24 bases and scored 24 runs.
Mark, the Fairfield-bound shortstop, batted .451 with a .547
OBP. He had 25 steals and scored 27 runs. He also made 6
pitching appearances, going 4-0 with 2 saves.
Regis finished the season 16-2 and won the Bronx/Manhattan
division title.

The School That Works

When I told my boss I was
leaving Deutsche Bank, his
long silence was broken with a
simple, yet expected, question:
“Is it Goldman [Sachs]?”
Rather than let him go down
the standard list of competitors
who may have poached his
young analyst, I jumped in with
my un-expected answer:
“I’ve actually decided to teach
at a start-up high school in
Washington, D.C.”

the skyrocketing cost of education and the
shortage of suitable benefactresses, this was
no simple task. After teaming up with a
management consultant named Richard
Murray, the two men devised a plan to draw
funds from the least likely of sources: their
economically-disadvantaged students. The
idea was to have the students work one day
each week at local corporations in order
to pay their tuitions. However, this only
allowed students to attend school four days
each week. With college as the ultimate
goal, students could not afford to lose
academic time. Without hesitation, Foley
lengthened the school day and year to make
up the difference.
This grand educational experiment began the
next year in August 1996, when Cristo Rey
Jesuit High School welcomed its first group
of students. When asked about those early
days, Foley remembers, “I wanted to hide

The schools maintain functional autonomy
but benefit from the resources and oversight

The rapid growth of the Network over these
past few years highlights the glaring hole
in secondary education for low-income,
urban students. With low test scores and
high dropout rates, the plight of inner-city
education can be described in no uncertain
terms as an epidemic. Still, the need for
good high schools in these areas does not by
itself explain the spread of Cristo Rey. After
all, only something with an impressive track
record merits replication.
What the Cristo Rey Network has achieved
in a small period of time is nothing short
of remarkable. With rigorous college
preparatory curriculums, ninety-eight
percent of students graduate and ninety-five
percent attend college. In fact, there are five
Cristo Rey alumni currently attending my
alma mater, Georgetown, with three more
on the way next year.
In just my first year at Don Bosco Cristo
Rey in Takoma Park, MD, I can already
see the source of these statistics at work.
Over these past ten months I have watched
Don Bosco Cristo Rey students take a field trip to visit Georgetown University where they met with
admissions officers, toured the campus, attended classes, and had lunch in the student cafeteria.

rise. Results from our standardized tests
arrived last week; without any specialized
preparation, our scores improved an
unprecedented seven percentage points in
one year.
The obvious question, then, is how did
this crazy idea, borne out of financial
necessity, blossom into a powerful and
transferable model for educational success?
I have spent many hours over the past year
considering this very question, and while
no singular answer exists, my response is as
follows. While other models use behavior
modification or a strict emphasis on
standardized tests, Cristo Rey attempts to
narrow the achievement gap by creating a
student-initiated achievement culture.
This culture starts with the work program,
where students perform entry-level clerical
work in law firms, banks and consultancies.
The program originally meant to simply
fund these students’ schooling actually has
invaluable educational benefits. First, these
jobs give students exposure to a previously
unseen world, showing all that exists in the
professional realm. Second, by performing
work that, while not glamorous, is both
real and important, the students feel part
of this world and realize that such careers

are within their reach. Third, students take
the next step and decide that not only are
such careers possible but desirable. Fourth,
students realize that the only way to achieve
their personal and professional dreams is by
working hard in school to get to college.
This trajectory takes place at different times
for different students but the common
thread is that students at Cristo Rey take
ownership of their education. Most students
arrive by 7:30am and do not leave until
5:30pm, typically with Regis-like commutes
on both ends of the day. Teachers,
administrators and job sponsors set the bar
unusually high in terms of behavior and
performance. Yet I am continually amazed
by how our students meet and even exceed
our lofty expectations; I am blown away by
their maturity and professionalism, but most
of all their determination.
In writing this article, I found out that I am
not the only Regian involved with Cristo Rey.

President of San Juan Diego (Austin). The
fact that Cristo Rey would attract Regians
is unsurprising not simply because of Regis’

the two models. Both originated, albeit
eighty-two years apart, to provide affordable,
academically-excellent Catholic educations
to groups who could not afford them. Both
succeed today because of the high expectations
infused with cura personalis that they set forth
for every student.

MARK KOLAKOWSKI ’77 WRITES STUDENT GUIDE TO BUSINESS CAREERS

In developing Career Confidential: An
Insider’s Guide to Business (Bamboo Books,
Arlington, VA), Mark Kolakowski ‘77
thought back to his Regis days. “I didn’t
know what a career in business really
entailed, but I decided on one through
a process of elimination. Law, medicine,
dentistry, teaching, the clergy and other
paths didn’t seem to suit me. Business was
my default option.”
After economics at Harvard and a finance
MBA from Wharton, Mark began a
multidisciplinary career at AT&T, Touche
Ross and Merrill Lynch. In 2001, he became
a freelance writer and consultant. Then John
Wills, a Georgetown Prep-bred Harvard
roommate, whose brother co-founded the
Catholic University of Ukraine, urged Mark
to write a book for his publishing firm.
“John loved my idea: case studies drawn
from my experiences, with an eye to the
humorous and memorable, that teach
important lessons about the business world.
The sort of stuff I wish I knew when I was in
school, and even well into my own working
life. After spinning my wheels for a few
years, I hunkered down, made a detailed
outline and, yes, wrote about half the final
book in a week. Then, at John’s urging, I
added profiles of major white-collar career
paths. Happily, the feedback has been
overwhelmingly positive so far.”
After being presented with a copy of the
book Frank Walsh added: “Mark’s book is
chock full of basic, practical information and
sage advice for young persons—bright high
school students and college students alike—
who are planning a future in business. His
taxonomy of careers should be particularly
helpful to those still “uninitiated” readers
who are just beginning to explore their
options in the business world.”

MICHAEL RAMOS ’79 NAMED EXECUTIVE ALEXANDER PASSANTINO ’89

DIRECTOR OF THE CHURCH COUNCIL OF
GREATER SEATTLE
Mr. Ramos, former
head of the Council’s
social justice ministries,
was named the new
executive director
in late May. Chosen
from over 30 qualified candidates
nationwide, he will be the first
layperson to be selected as executive
director in the Council’s 89-year
history. The Council, which includes
about 420 Seattle area Catholic and
Protestant churches, runs social-
service programs, lobbies for social
justice and works for cooperation
among different faiths and
denominations.
As executive director, Mr. Ramos
plans to reach out to evangelical
churches and continue the work
he has done to partner more
with ethnically diverse churches.
Previously on the Council he has
worked extensively to organize the
many Catholic congregations now
in flux with growing numbers of
Latino members. Before serving on
the Council he had also worked as
director of Latino ministries for the
Diocese of Oakland, California.
Another issue that Mr. Ramos
plans to put front and center is the
Council’s work on behalf of the
homeless.
Michael is married with two
daughters. His family lives in Seattle
and attends St. Patrick’s Catholic
Church on Capitol Hill. He holds
a Master of Divinity degree from
Seattle University.

On March 5th, President
Bush nominated Alexander
Passantino ’89 to be
Administrator of the Wage
and Hour Division at the
Department of Labor. Mr.
Passantino currently serves
as Deputy Administrator
and Acting Administrator of
the Division. Prior to this,
he served as Senior Policy
Advisor to the Assistant
Secretary at the Employment
Standards Administration at
the Department of Labor.
Before joining the Department of Labor, he worked as an
associate at Hunton & Williams, LLP.
Mr. Passantino received his Bachelor of Arts degree in
political science from Emory University and his Juris
Doctor, cum laude, from the University of Georgia School
of Law. He lives in Virginia with his wife, Kristin, and their
daughter.

COMPUTER AWARDS AGAIN EXCELLENCE IN SCIENCE

award for the national ThinkQuest competition
2008 (one of the two first place awards for
Division 3 – Grades 9-12). To view the website

of the Website is “Introduction to Interactivity
Online.”
This award won by the Regis team is for the web
site that is easiest to navigate for visually impaired
Web users. Accessible websites are characterized
by clear text that can be resized, headings for fast
navigation, good contrast and clean fonts. The
prizes were a laptop for each student in the team,
a $1000 gift certificate from Best Buy for the
school and a $1000 gift certificate from Best Buy
for the coach, Ms. Caroline Christie.
The ThinkQuest Challenge is a contest for
students to create educational websites. The
project-based, collaborative learning experience
addresses 21st century learning by providing an
opportunity for students to develop higher order
thinking skills, problem solve in a real world
context, and act as knowledge producers. Readers
may remember that the Regis Web team also
won last year’s ThinkQuest New York City Web
Design Competition.
On June 19th at the White House, President
Bush awarded the Presidential Medal
of Freedom to six Americans including
Dr. Anthony Fauci ’58. The medal is the
highest civilian award in the United States
and is considered to be equivalent to the
Congressional Gold Medal. It is designed
to recognize individuals who have made
“an especially meritorious contribution
to the security or national interests of the
United States, world peace, cultural or other
significant public or private endeavors.”
The text of Dr. Fauci’s citation reads: “As
a physician, medical researcher, author,
and public servant, Dr. Anthony Fauci has
dedicated his life to expanding the horizons
of human knowledge and making progress
toward groundbreaking cures for diseases.
Adolfo Cuesta ’06, a rising
junior at Haverford College, was
recently named an Honorable
Mention winner by the Barry
M. Goldwater Scholarship and
Excellence in Education Program.
The Goldwater Foundation
awards annual scholarships to outstanding
undergraduates planning to pursue careers in
science and mathematics.
Cuesta, a biology/biochemistry major, became
involved with scientific research at an early age,
spending his high school summers working in
laboratories at places such as Temple University,
the National Institute for Allergy and Infectious
Disease (NIAID) in Bethesda, Md., and
the University of Washington in Seattle. At
Haverford, he has been assisting Professor of
Biology and Associate Provost Phil Meneely in
studying the genetic components of chromosome
pairing during meiosis, which underlies the
production of sperm and egg cells.
“Defects in chromosome pairing can lead to
human diseases such as Down’s Syndrome and
Klinefelter’s Syndrome,” says Cuesta. “A better
understanding of the molecular mechanisms of
chromosome pairing is as a result necessary in
order to better understand the underlying cause
for human aneuploidy [a change in the number
of chromosomes that can lead to abnormalities].”

Fauci with the award, President Bush
mentioned how much he knows Dr. Fauci
credits his success to his Jesuit education.

from Holy Cross.

REGIANS PLACE WELL IN
NATIONAL SPANISH EXAM
The National Spanish Examination is an online,
standardized assessment tool given voluntarily
by over 3000 teachers throughout the United
States to measure proficiency and achievement
of students who are studying Spanish as a second
language.
The majority of Regis students who took the
exam scored above the 90th percentile nationally,
and a number of students placed in the
Metropolitan area. Those winners are: Zachary
Ashenfarb, 2nd Place on the Level 1 Exam;
Christopher Neylan, 3rd Place in the Outside

FR. FREDERICK J. O’BRIEN, S.J. REST IN PEACE
This year, the Fore Trost Golf Outing
Fr. Frederick J. O’Brien, S.J., died on Monday, May 19, 2008, at will be celebrating its Seventh
Hollywood Presbyterian Hospital in Hollywood, California. He was Annual Event on September 27th,
76 years of age. He had been a member of the Society of Jesus for 58 highlighted by a day of golf at Lido

REMEMBRANCES OF FR. O’BRIEN

One day, while doing morning announcements,
I had to read script that went something like this,
“GIRLS, GIRLS, GIRLS!!! Remember that
tonight’s dance in the auditorium begins
at 8pm and our sister academy will be
represented in full force, and that means
GIRLS, GIRLS, GIRLS!!!!”
Then, I felt compelled to embellish with the
following pearl of extemporaneous wit,
“Also remember that I do not write these
announcements.”
For a moment of tense anticipation that
seemed much longer than it actually was, I
nervously, VERY nervously, awaited Father
O’Brien’s reaction from the other room. It
came in the form of unexpected yet welcome,
boisterous, earnest laughter. Once it was over,
he gave me a pat on the back and told me that
he thought that was very funny. That made
my day.
And then, I realized that it was really like that
all of the time for me at Regis. I always felt
safe and encouraged. And that feeling doesn’t
occur by accident. That kind of atmosphere
exists because the leadership forces it to
exist through dedication, accountability, and
understanding, among infinite other affirming
qualities, both intangible and concrete.
At the funeral, James Woods’ beautiful homily
further reminded me of reasons that I always
liked Father O’Brien so much. He was a full
immersion-style student of Spanish, which
Santiago Vazquez and his small family always
appreciated. His impulse was to see in people
the gifts that God had given them. He was
the sort of leader that inspires leadership
in others through example. He worked so
hard that he made it look easy. For that, I am
forever grateful to Father O’Brien. I’ll never
forget him.

The Class of ’89 had a particular affection
for Fr. O’Brien. We happily dedicated our
yearbook to him in his last year as headmaster.
Even as teenagers, many of us appreciated
that we were around model educator, a calm
leader, a profoundly disciplined academic who
tempered his knowledge with a great sense
of wit and levity, a master historian, a lasting
teacher, and above all, an unfathomably
loving, moral and caring man.
Nineteen years later and Fr. O’Brien remains
a constant influence on me. With every
accomplishment and every mistake I consider
how Fr. O’Brien would react. His quiet
confidence in me, in us, unstated as with any
proper Irishman, continues to motivate.
I am among the lucky few whom Fr. O’Brien
actually taught while at Regis. In the summer
of 1987, I learned that Fr. O’Brien was going
to be my history teacher in junior year. I
had observed Fr. O’Brien only in addresses
as headmaster, where his reserved, New
England accent I misread for being stern and
unapproachable.
For the next two years, Fr. O’Brien taught
us Western History. I have never felt more
confidence in my intellect than at seventeen
under Fr. O’Brien’s tutelage. Fr. O’Brien had
us plunging into out-of-print texts in the
reading room at the New York Public Library.
To learn French and German history from
Fr. O’Brien was to learn the culture from the
inside out.
A last story speaks, I believe, to the essence
of Fr. O’Brien, and what he meant to us. In
senior year, a scandal took place involving a
number of classmates. It could have marred
the reputation of the school. Fr. O’Brien
addressed the class in a special assembly.
One measure of the anguish we created
was that we sent Fr. O’Brien to quote Soren
Kierkegaard for guidance. The speech was
short. He could have rebuked us. He could
have expressed deep disappointment. But he
didn’t. Fr. O’Brien simply finished by saying, “I
am sorry. I have failed you,” and then walked
off the stage.
No, Father, you never did fail us. I hope never
to fail you.

Bill Smollen writes: “Now that I’m retired I often
look back to the active, more fun days- including
the Regis years. Not traveling very much and
having given up golf, keeping in touch with
the school and the class of ’35 is great!” Ovid
DiFiore has penned a true to life narrative of
his experiences as a WWII Army Signal Corps
Photographer. He spent 4 years in this position,
39 months of which were spent in Australia,
New Guinea and the Phillipines. The story is
told in the form of substantial excerpts from
150 actual letters written during those years,
and illustrated by over 25 photos. The title of
the book is “Melbourne to Manila” and it is

Going into year 2008 we had a trio of classmates
The Class of ’53 gathered at the New York Athletic Club on April 12th for their 55th reunion. The
festivities will continue in October in Santa Barbara, CA where the geographically-conscious class will
have another reunion.
still residing on Long Island. I’m one of them.
Just last week I ran into another, Jack Conlin,
while we were both shopping at a supermarket
in Wantagh, my home town. He lives in
neighboring Seaford. Jack still wears that great
smile. Aside from a troublesome back which
resulted from a freaky accidental fall, he appears
to be doing well. Our other Long Islanders
passed away on March 14. That would be Ed
Jabbour. Since we met several times over the
years, I remember him as a good friend and I
know that the rest of our classmates had the
same feeling. Ed was one of four brothers and,
remarkably, all of them attended Regis. He
contributed significantly to the success of our
basketball team and later joined the team at
St. Peter’s College. After serving our country
in World War II, Ed went to work in the family
retail business, “R. Jabbour and Sons” in
mid-town Manhattan. They specialized in fine
linens. Ed was devoted to his wife, Mary, his
six daughters, fourteen grandchildren and two
great grandchildren. (Also, twins on the way).
Since he was a longtime resident of Manhasset,
he decided to move the business to the Island.
Upon retirement he passed on the management
of the company to his daughter, Anita. She had
taken on major responsibility in the years prior
to his retirement. The Jabbours and the family of
Steve Barone were like peas in a pod from way
back when. Ed was a classmate you could always
count on. I believe that he attended every get-
together that the class of ’39 ever had.

Department, Tom Delaney retired in 1988 as

Tommy Barron is relocating to Long Island in
June after a 5 year exile in New Jersey- they miss
all the kids and grandkids. Tommy says “hello”
to John Walsh, his old classmate at St. Monica’s

It is with sadness that we report the death of
Fr. Tony LaBau in the spring of 2008. I believe
he was in his early 90s. We, who had him in
freshman F, remember him as a dedicated
teacher and a “great guy”. I was never sent to
“Jug” by him. Tom Sheridan reports that he took
part in the 2008 Regis Golf Outing. He was
the oldest player on the course. It was a windy,
cold day with the temperature in the 50’s. Tom
was doing well until he lost his ball in the ball
wash machine on the 12th tee. Tom is a chaplain
at the INS Detention Center in Elizabeth, NJ.
He assists those immigrants who are seeking
asylum in America. He speaks both French and
Spanish fluently. Bud Fredericks had 3 more
grandchildren graduate from Community College
in June and they will complete their studies at
a 4 year college. Bud and Dot are extremely
proud that their oldest son won the Gold Cup
for Golf at the Special Olympics in Oregon. In
April, Ed Devins, his wife, Kathleen, and Jim
O’Connell and his wife, Terry, had lunch with a
long time mutual friend at the Fort Hamilton
Club. The friend was in the China Marines with
Ed and grew up with Jim in Annunciation Parish
in Manhattan and now lives near Jim in Jersey.
Hughie Carroll was to join them, but was giving
a lecture that day. Ed feels that Jim (formerly Jake
to us) was the best basketball player at Regis
during our time. Who can argue with that? Ed
still lives in the same house in Brooklyn that he

grew up in. His next door neighbor, at one point,
was Frank O’Brien. Bill Dunn and Eileen still
enjoying the good life on Cape Cod. His son is
still a detective with the NYPD and his daughter
is an attorney with a large law firm in the City.
Bill still loves doing the role of Macbeth. Eileen
says that he doesn’t do it on the stage anymore.
He does it in his backyard. Lou Maresca and
Theresa are back in Jersey after spending the
winter in Florida. Lou told me that our Tom
Murphy’s brother, George died recently. One of
Lou’s daughters married George’s son. Lou is
being well taken care of. His 2 daughters are
doctors. Jack Jackman still down in Texas. His
wife, Ruth, is doing nicely after undergoing 2
hip replacements. They have 6 children and 7
grandchildren. He is now retired, after many
years as the Regional Sales Mgr. with a large
construction firm. Tom McGuire has been
living in a condo in Maine now for 4 years and
loves it. He is President of the Condo Board.
Two daughters and 4 grandchildren live in the
area also. He has a total of 13 grandchildren.
Jack Scully hanging in there up at Fordham’s
Rose Hill. Bob Kelly is presently in the infirmary
there. Frank Shiels had a 2nd hip replacement
and now uses a cane. He had to give up his
ballroom dancing, which he enjoyed immensely,
at Roseland. Frank says his specialty was the
mambo. Out of the way, Tomas!! Tom O’Connor
has retired from the practice of medicine in
Westchester County. With the recent addition of
another grandchild, they now have 1 girl and 6
boys, most of them in the area. Sometime ago,
his son wrote a book entitled “Buffalo Chargers”
that was made into a movie staring Ed Harris.
Marty Murtagh and Anne took a trip to Ireland
in April. His grandson, who went to Regis and
Notre Dame, has graduated from Einstein
Medical College and is interning in orthopedics
at the Hospital for Joint Disease in NYC. Bob
Rafferty feels that he may the youngest one in
our class. When I spoke to him earlier this year,
he was a young 80 years old. He may be correct.
He is doing okay, but says that he moves at a
slower pace now. Bob McGrath fighting a little
emphysema down in So. Carolina, but otherwise,
is doing okay. John McGeechan sends his best to
all his classmates. Doing okay in Mahwah, New
Jersey. Tomas Ryan still active in the practice of
law with his son in mid-toww Manhattan in the
fields of Trusts & Estates and Mexican Law. If
you get sick after eating at Taco Bells, give Tomas
a call. He charges only a few Pesos per hour. Joe
Maloney checks in from south Florida. All is well
with him, but his wife had a stay at a hospital in
Louisville, where her family is. I spoke to Tom
Murphy, who is at Fordham. He sounded great.
He went through grammar school with Nick
Seguljic and attended Nick’s graduation from
Georgetown Medical School. Nick’s parents were
there also and they were all excited when Nick
won the prestigious medical, awarded to the top
student in the class. What would this column
be without some mention of our hard working
Chilean, Gene (Bud, Roon, etc) Rooney. I get
birthday cards about once a month from him.
He has survived earthquakes, floods, civil wars
and over-due books down there in Santiago. He
is well on his way to recovery from his recent
surgery in the States. He did suffer the loss of a
very good friend recently, Fr. Larry Hunt, SJ. He
once bought a Kof C lottery ticket for Gene and
he won. No word from Gene as to how much
and what happened to the money. If your name
does not appear in any of these Prowlings, call
up Frank Crahay. I have to send him a copy
of the column each month for his approval.

On Friday, March 14, the Class of ‘46 lost an
outstanding member, John S. Nelson. Jack was
Professor Emeritus at Fordham University in
the Graduate School of Religion and Religious
Education of which he was one of the Co-
founders. Bill Clarke and Irene and Ken Hickman
paid their last respects at the Wake on Tuesday,
March 18. The Class was represented by Roman
Chapelsky and Irene and Ken Hickman at the
Mass of Christian Burial in Fordham University
Church on Wednesday, March 19, with Father
George C. McCauley, S.J. ‘48, Homilist. Please
remember Jack, his wife Catherine, daughter
Meg, and his family in your prayers. After the
Mass, Irene, Ken and Roman joined Father
Jim Carney ‘43, Erwin Beck and Frank Rooney,
residents of Murray-Weigel Hall at Fordham
in the dining hall for lunch and a spirited
discussion of times past and present. The group
also ran into Father Vincent O’Keefe who was a
Scholastic at Regis when the Class ‘46 was there.
Charley Schneider says that he, Art Fonseca and
George O’Donnell have taken up the challenge
of having the class summer luncheon out on the
Island. Eating their way around the Island, they
have formulated tentative plans around Koenig’s
in Floral Park in mid July, possibly Wednesday
the 17th, ladies invited. Reports are that there is
plenty of parking, good public transportation and
connections, and excellent food. More specific
information will be coming. But we do ask you to
chime in.

As usual we have some good news and
some sad news. For starters some good
news: we celebrated our 60th reunion at the
Lowenstein Building in Fordham’s Lincoln
Center on Saturday, June 7th. Our classmates
came from all over the country and even from
around the globe: Don Opel from Florida, Andy
Mcmahon from Texas, Dr. Jim Reynolds from
Minnesota, and Fr. Jim O’Donnell, S.J. from
the Philippines. It began with a five o’clock
Mass concelebrated by Fathers Joe O’Hare, Jim
O’Donnell, and Frank Lynch. At the end of the
service, we sang our Alma Mater song. After
Mass we had a cocktail hour. Yippee! Then
we had a delicious dinner. It was estimated
that about 40 classmates were there along with
about 20 “others”, mostly spouses.
That compares with the class of 1947, who
had only 8 classmates. Fr. Joe O’Hare’s role
in planning and managing the reunion was
recognized with a standing ovation. Bill Churchill
informed the group that Ray Bergan’s successor
as Class Co-Correspondent will be Joe Breen.

The sad news is that we lost two classmates
since the Spring issue of the RAN. Ray Bergan
died on May 1, and Bill O’Hara died on May 9.
After Regis and Holy Cross, Ray graduated
from Georgetown University Law School in
1954. Ray served three years in the Army, then
settled in Arlington, VA and joined Edward
Bennett Williams’s law firm, which later became
Williams & Connolly. In five decades as a lawyer,
Ray represented former Teamster leader Jimmy
Hoffa, Fairfax County politicians in a notorious
1960’s bribery case, and a major Southeastern
auto distributor against two dozen lawsuits
from car dealerships. In addition to criminal law,
he practiced antitrust, class action, consumer
protection, and civil rights law. His colleagues
regarded him as one of the most skilled litigators
of his generation. Ray enjoyed reading, movies,
and traveling to Florida in winter. Ray left his wife
of 51 years, Mary Elizabeth Bergan, four children,
a brother, and six grandchildren. After Regis,
Bill O’Hara went to Fordham University. He was
in the Army for two years during the Korean War.
He was an accomplished left-handed pitcher
and served his time on Okinawa, pitching for
the Army. He loved to tell the story of when he
pitched to Willie Mays. He said, “The ball has yet
to land.” After his Army service,
Bill was drafted by the St. Louis Browns (now
the Baltimore Orioles). At Regis Bill had played
two years of baseball on the Junior Varsity and
one year on the Varsity. He declined to take his
signing bonus from the Browns, but instead
he went to work and to NYU and earned a
Master’s degree in Finance. He was employed
by Continental Can and General Foods. Then
he was hired by the Pharmaceutical Firm of
Schering-Plough, where he rose to the position
of Corporate Treasurer. Bill was an avid Mets
and NY Giants fan. He was predeceased by his
beloved wife Marilyn and daughter Nancy. He is
survived by four children, eleven grandchildren,
and three brothers. After Regis and Holy
Cross College, Joe Sweeting entered Columbia
University Medical School and graduated in
1956. Joe got married that year and joined the
Medical House Staff of Columbia Presbyterian
Medical Center. In 1958, the U.S. Government,
which had granted him deferments from military
service, decided that it was time for Joe to pay
them back. They offered him a choice between
the Army or the Indian Service. Joe chose the
Indians. Joe and his wife spent two years in
Indian Hospitals in Oklahoma and Montana.
Joe delivered about 75 babies despite having
no training in that field. After this service Joe
returned to Columbia and began to do some
research in liver disease. He eventually joined
the Medical Staff and spent the next 40 years
seeing patients and teaching Gastroenterology
and General Internal Medicine. In 2006 Joe
and his wife and 6 sons celebrated their 50th
wedding anniversary. Joe closed his office, but
continues to teach in the Medical School and the
Hospital. In 2007 Joe had an opportunity to go
to Taiwan and China for two months to teach in
some of their Medical Schools and Hospitals.
Joe was surprised by their widespread ability
to understand and communicate in English.
Regis and class trivia: We said in a previous
RAN that we thought that John White was our
youngest classmate. His birth date is April 16,
1931; however, it has been discovered that the
real champion in this area is Fr. Jim O’Donnell,
SJ, who was born April 25, 1931. Also, in our day,
Regis offered the following languages: Latin,
Greek, French, and Spanish. A new one has been
added: Mandarin, the most used Chinese dialect.

The Reunion will be held on Saturday May 30,
2009 at the school. The Reunion will begin
in mid-afternoon with tours of the school,
followed by Mass in the Chapel, a cocktail hour
and dinner. It goes without saying, spouses
and other guests would be most welcomed.

Jim Moser writes, in an e-mail, he has “some
interest in coming” from Madison, Wisconsin
to the Reunion but notes “it is much more than
just a 20-min. ride”. It is hoped that Jim will be
able to join us next May. Margaret and Mike
Schiffer winter in Tucson, Arizona and return to
their home in Claryville, New York in May. Both
planned to attend Mike’s 55th Reunion at Holy
Cross in June. Their family spreads from Boston
to California with intermediate stops in Hartford,
Raleigh, Cleveland, Albuquerque and Phoenix.
Two of their daughters live in Seoul, South Korea;
each is married to an Army Colonel. One of the
daughters is expecting in October. This will be
the 43rd grandchild for Margaret and Mike who
intend to travel to Korea in the fall to welcome
the new addition. Paul Kennedy has successfully
completed radiation and chemotherapy
treatments for Hodgkin’s disease. Frank Gehring
has been treated for prostate cancer and looks
forward to joining us next May for the 60th. Two
grandsons of Al Burke, Jack and Will Salter from
Manhasset, will enter Regis as freshmen this
fall. At the Spring Phonathon I spoke with the
following members of the class: Al Burke, Jim
Evrard, Paul Geissler, Paul Lorch, Al Mally, Dave
Martin, Charles Riche and Jack White. Lastly,
listed in the Milestones section of the Spring
2008 issue of the RAN among the deceased was
Bill Hickey. Please remember Bill in your prayers.

on May 6, 2008. Condolences to John’s

a meeting in D.C. Joe Marchese sent his regrets;
he and Tillie were attending the high school
graduation of one of their grandsons. Snowbirds
Bill Peloso and wife, Julie, were coming back
to NY from their Florida sojourn the following
week. Here’s a suggestion to those of you in
Florida or elsewhere who may be planning
for next year’s 55th anniversary reunion from
Fordham, Manhattan or other eastern colleges
(presumably, early in June ‘09). Come to NYC a
few days earlier and join us for our annual Class
of ‘50 reunion at Hurley’s. The date will be May

and I just celebrated our 51st wedding anniversary

son Kevin is president of PFT in Saugerties
and sons Terry and Steve work with him. Son
Dennis is part owner of an opticianary chain
in Westchester.” Camille and Vic Figurelli just
celebrated their 50th anniversary (5/31/58).

Ray Gehan reports that he and Ginny attended
a wedding in Hilton Head in early May where
the father of the groom was Frank O’Regan ‘54.
Frank’s wife Peggy and Ginny were classmates
in the first grade in St. Saviours School in
Brooklyn. Also attending were Jack Conroy ‘54,
and his wife Kathy. On the way back north, they
made a surprise visit to ‘53 classmate Dave
Hammock, M.D., who has an OB/GYN practice
in Beaufort, South Carolina. Dave moved there
from Brooklyn in 1976. The Gehans spent a very
delightful hour or so in Dave’s office, catching
up on the last 55 years and laughing over many
old Regis stories. Ray adds: “So you see, even
though we could not attend the real ‘53 reunion
in New York, we did have a mini reunion in
South Carolina.” Although Marilyn and Dick
Doyle, Jim McGuire, and Patricia and Jack Roche
had to cancel at the last minute, we had a well-
attended and very happy day of reunion in New
York City on April 12th. The celebratory dinner
at the NYAC attracted Manhattan-dwellers Joe
Barbosa, John Duffy and Msgr. John Sullivan;
Jean and John Cannon and Bob Golden and
Barbara Inman from Westchester County; Ken
Lally, Millie and Joe McDonald and Fr. George
Michell, all from Long Island; George Cardinale
and Patrizia and Tom Hickey from New Jersey;
Marge and Jim Paul from Virginia; Kathy and
Brian Fitzgerald from New Hampshire; Sally
Ann and Jim Whelan from Rochester, NY; and
Lynne and Bill Kenny who flew in from Toronto.
Earlier in the day several ‘53ers took part in The
Charles Millard (left), director of the Pension
Benefit Guaranty Corporation, presents the
agency’s Distinguished Career Service Award
to Assistant Chief Counsel James J. Armbruster
’70 (right) for his more than 20 years of
contributions to the federal pension insurance
program. Armbruster received the award during
the PBGC’s annual employee recognition
ceremony April 16, 2008 in Washington, D.C.
Classroom Revisited sessions, guided tours of
Regis and the reunion Mass in the school chapel
which was celebrated jointly with the other,
less mature anniversary classes. Fr. George
Michell was one of the five concelebrants. This
was George’s first ‘53 reunion and on Sunday
morning he returned to his duties as pastor of
St. Patrick’s Church in Southold NY a happy
man. John Sullivan was surprisingly relaxed for a
guy who was scheduled to host the Pope in less
than a week; but that’s John. Jim Paul had his
left arm in a sling following shoulder surgery but
vowed he’d be back on the links in short order.
Everyone else appeared to be relatively intact. On
Sunday morning, the Fitzgeralds, McDonalds,
and Whelans joined John Duffy and Tom Hickey
for an Irish brunch at Kennedy’s Restaurant
on 57th Street. The 55th Reunion to be held in
Santa Barbara in October looks very promising.
It is under the capable management of Fred
Gluck and Ron Tobin, with strong contributions
from Bonnie and Dick Coleman and Ed Kapp.
(Ed who recently had eye surgery is doing well
and is expecting a complete recovery.) Also,
among the 33 men and ladies currently signed
up to attend the Santa Barbara extravaganza
are Bob Mulligan, Fred Merklin, erstwhile and
future Class Rep Tom Hickey, John Cannon, Joe
Barbosa, George Bouvet, Dick Doyle, and Vic
Figurelli. Most will stay at least three nights.

Tobin was featured in the Summer 2008 issue
of the Saint Peter’s College magazine as the first
in a series of articles on SPC alumni who are

My apologies for missing the deadline on
the last issue of Prowlings; I hope I have
incorporated that news in this issue. Two
reminders: I am able to send out notices to

is our 55th reunion year; we are looking for ideas,
suggestions and volunteers to get something
going. Be in touch! For many of us, this is the
year of the fiftieths – college graduations and
weddings. Lou Luceri reports that he and Jo,
along with Walt Doherty, Eileen and Steve Popp,
Carole and Dave Nicholas, and Barbara and Bill
Noval were each presented with the Brother
Thomas C. Thomas Award for fifty years of
“service, benefactions loyalty and scholarship” to
Manhattan College at their celebration the first
weekend in June. Lou also reports that he and Jo
welcomed their seventh grandchild, Christopher
Davis Luceri, last November 20th. That same
June weekend there was a gathering a bit north
of the previous one to welcome new members
of the Purple Knights at Holy Cross. Peggy
and Tom Tierney, Peggy and Frank O’Regan,
Peggy and Traug Lawler (do you see a pattern
here?), Ann and Ed Wilson, and Kathy and Jack
Conroy shared a wonderful weekend and were
duly inducted. Ed Wilson has been elected
to the 11 member national Board of Trustees
of Voice of the Faithful. Jean and Joe Sullivan
begin another summer of travel in June with
a trip to Santa Fe than to San Francisco for an
Elderhostel to the Northern California National
Parks followed by a week long Zen meditation
retreat at Inisfada, the Jesuit retreat house in
Manhasset, NY. In September they are off to
an Elderhostel hiking trip in Pennsylvania and
hope to wind up in Savannah to visit one of
their sons, his wife and three daughters. Traug
and Peggy Lawler who celebrated their 50th
wedding anniversary on June 14 left home in
early March and visited North Carolina, Florida,
Texas, Arizona, and California; rented a house
in Portland, Oregon for the month of April to be
near their youngest grandchild (nearly 4); then
drove home via Lake Louise, Denver, Chicago,
Bloomington, and Columbus, arriving home
May 16. He reports, “Altogether we drove 11,500
miles and visited over 50 people--including
Phill Trainor and Roberta Wood in Chapel Hill.
Maudy and Tom Finnegan came to dinner at
Phill’s one night, and Phill and I played two
rounds of golf. What a sweet two days! The
whole wonderful trip was our celebration of
our 50th wedding anniversary. The actual date
is June 14, and our children are giving a party
for us in Cape Cod in August. We’re milking it,
maybe. I have taught two courses in the English
department and two in the Yale Divinity School
(Dante; Four English Religious Poets) since I
retired in 2005; I also keep slogging through
my never-quite-finished research projects on
Chaucer and Langland. My handicap is going
up, but I can hold my own against my grandsons
at HORSE.” This spring Recka and Jim Carr

cruised the Danube (not blue) from Budapest
to Nurnberg. Wonderful scenery, great history
lessons and the Regis German classes really
mattered from Vienna onward. Actually, having
a wife born in Germany helped a little too. Recka
became a grandmother for the first time--girl,
Arden--bringing their total to ten. Walt Doherty’s
singing brought him to Yankee stadium for the
Pope’s visit and to St. Patrick’s cathedral in
May for the ordination of priests. He and Peggy
(another one!) will be married 50 years on Sept.
1. He adds, “We continue our celebration by
taking our 2 sons, 5 daughters, their spice, and
12 grandchildren to Disneyworld in July; a family
reunion in Vulcan, AB, Canada and in Calgary
in August at Peg’s cousin’s; we will finish our
celebration in Quebec during the first week in
September. Peggy’s father’s great grandparents
immigrated to Quebec from Clogher, Tyrone,
Ireland in 1820. The book about her family that
Peg & I are writing is nearly 500 pages now.
Genealogy is a great excuse for celebrations.
While speaking with Sister Joan Franks, the
current principal of Dominican Academy, we
learned the she was Frank Franks’ younger sister
who had graduated from DA in 1959. Michelle
Thompson and my wife, Peggy, both DA ‘54
graduates, had double dated with Frank in our
High school years. Frank has 5 children and
now lives in Warrenton, VA. (No Longer is he
one of the Unknowns.) I spoke with Ed Malloy a
few days ago. He had hurt his ankle, and while
in the hospital had developed a serious staph
infection which took 6 months of hospitalization
to recover from He is back home in Bethesda,
MD now with his wife, Iris, a lovely lady he found
in Australia many years ago.” Ann and Dick Ward
welcomed a grandson on May 2. The head count
is now 5 boys and three girls, all under ten years
of age. They also have a new daughter-in-law,
Selina Keilani, who married their son Tommy
in Austin, TX. “Four of our five children will be
married, leaving a very eligible doctor-daughter
if anyone in the Class of ‘54 has any suggestions.
I stepped down as a partner in my firm on May
31, 2006 and into a role as “Of Counsel”. Less
work and more time to work on my golf game.
I’m all for a 55th, anywhere, anytime. I will be
attending the 55th reunion, West Coast version in
Santa Barbara, of the Class of ‘53 in October. I’ll
be the young immature token underclassman.
There is an expected turnout of about 15 from
the Class of ‘53 plus spouses at this reunion.”
John Ryan will be on the go all summer with
reunions and retreats and a little bit of vacation
with his sisters. Tom Smith writes: “In December
we became proud grandparents x2 when the
adoptions of Kaitlin Marie and Jessica Reigh
became final. Our youngest son Dennis and
his wife Tammy, after 21 years married realized
their dream of parenthood. They are now in the
final process of adopting the youngest sister
of the two girls, Chelsea Faith. It brings to 11
our number of grandchildren. Grandchild #1,
Heather, is currently serving as a combat medic
with the 101st Airborne (Screaming Eagles) in
Iraq. Keep her in your prayers please. This is
her 2nd tour there. All other grands are doing
great.” Mary and Bill McGovern had their third
grandchild on President’s Day. “I had two bad
falls last month but have completely recovered
.Son Ed is doing his internship for his Bachelor’s
degree in Culinary Management from SUNY
Cobleskill at Friendly’s Restaurant in Niskayuna.
After that, he will be a full-fledged manager.
He and brother Dan just moved to a new
apartment.” Jim Perrone’s youngest son Daniel
returned from two weeks in Israel as part of
the Birthright Program. Dad and Mom waited
patiently but anxiously for his return to US
soil. Jim is still teaching upper level clinical
psychology courses at UCONN in Stamford and
is also working part-time as the Psychological
Counselor on campus. Fred Burgess writes: “4
of 5 children married; 9 grandchildren- enough
for a baseball team, 7 boys - 2 girls. (Graduated
from Jesuit Universities John Carroll, Marquette
and Loyola NO). Oldest, Rick, about to make

Tom Smith is still having fun teaching
mathematics at Manhattan College. The number
of grandchildren is up to 5, with 3 in Atlanta and
2 in Boston, so there are good excuses to visit.
Msgr. John Sullivan ‘53, whom we meet every
year at Jug Night, is the parish administrator
for St. Joseph’s Church on East 87 St., from
whose school Karl Brunhuber and Lou Umscheid
graduated. Pope Benedict XVI visited the Church
in April 2008. John Sullivan says a monthly Mass
in flawless German. Catholic New York reported
that John learned his German in a Jesuit school
in the area, whereas the New York Times cited
specifically: Regis High School. Herr Vogel
and Fr. Pfeiffer, S.J., would be proud. Amazing
that we schooled in such a multicultural and
polyglot neighborhood like Yorkville, inhabited
by so many Germans, Hungarians, Irish, “und
so weiter!” In May 2008, at the College of New
Rochelle Library, I came across a copy (blue
cover, black type and image of the Parthenon on
the cover) of Crosbie and Schaefer, Introduction

to Greek, which we used in First-Year Greek
(1952-1953) with Fr. Duffy, S.J. My reaction was
a combination of “Mirabile Dictu,” “Deja Vu,”
and “Sic Transit Gloria Mundi!” A thousand
thanks to Fr. Duffy for introducing us, and
teaching us for three years, to Ancient Greek,
one of the world’s unique languages and
literatures. The ‘55-ers who studied Greek at
Fordham College 1955-1957 (under Drs. Brady
and Robinson) excelled, thanks to the seamlessly
artful transmission to his students of Fr. Duffy’s
Ancient Greek passion! RIP. AMDG. John
Yacobellis has moved to Evergreen, CO, and
remains in contact with his fellow Coloradan,
Bill Brennan. Tim Russert (deceased June 13,
2008) hailed from South Buffalo and graduated
from Canisius High School, as did our beloved
teacher, Martin J. Neylon, S.J., the only graduate
from Canisius High ever to be ordained a

Butch Baumann is pleased to announce that son
Michael, who broke the string of 8 grandsons
with 2 granddaughters, was recently appointed
assistant superintendent at Sweet Home School
District, a suburb of Buffalo. Robert Imbelli had
a front page article in the Vatican Newspaper,
“L’Osservatore Romano,” on the Pope’s trip to
the United States. Barth Healey passed away
on March 29th. Over the years, Barth had been
a most enthusiastic member of the Class of ‘56.
It’s hard for me to remember an event that he
missed. He loved seeing any and all of us. When
we were planning our 50th reunion, Barth got
into the action, along with his son, Matthew,
and with Bill Bautz and his daughter, Meghan,
to create the magnificent Fiftieth Anniversary
Yearbook which we all treasure. None of us
knew it at the time, but Barth was already
struggling with the cancer that finally took him
today. He didn’t announce it until many months
later, when his condition was too severe to be
concealed. He continued to come to any Regis
‘56 events that he could, and most of us saw him
for the last time at our Christmas luncheon this
past December. Barth had been married to Lee in
1966. She passed away in 2003 while they were
completing a Fulbright assignment in Europe.
They were clearly very devoted to one another. In
recent years, Barth had a very satisfying life with
Jane Thomas, whom we all met at our 50th, and
enjoyed commuting between Port Washington
and the Hamptons. Rest in peace.
A 52nd reunion of the class of ‘56! Nine of us
gathered for lunch in NYC to welcome Greg
Leiher in from Portland, and to congratulate
him on the success of his surgery this winter.
He looks terrific and feels well. Thanks for all
your prayers and encouragement. We had a first
time reunion with Bob Zenhausern, who is living
in Manhattan, retired from academia, but still
working very diligently to provide instruction
to people with disabilities on the use of the
internet. He has had a fascinating career finding
ways for children with ADD, ADHD, and the like
to make the most of their learning potential. We
all enjoyed our reunion with Bob, and think he
will be a permanent member of our ad hoc lunch
crew, whenever we dream up an excuse to get
together. Coty and Jack Dowling were in New
York last week and took the occasion to arrange
dinner with Marie Postner, along with Nancy and
Paul Lennon. Marie wanted conveyed her most
sincere thanks to all the Regians who offered
their prayers and good wishes during Bill’s final
days and for the tributes paid to him at the wake
and funeral. She was particularly overwhelmed
with the very beautiful homily and eulogy offered
by Bob Imbelli, who concelebrated Bill’s Mass.

Philip Volastro retired 1 ½ years ago. He
practiced internal medicine and rheumatology
for 34 years. As assistant professor of medicine
at the University of Massachusetts he taught
students, medical residents and interns at
Berkshire Medical Center in Pittsfield, MA. While
attempting to track down all our classmates to
encourage them to attend the 50th reunion it was
discovered that Kevin Mitchell died in 1992. He
was 55 years old and died of pancreatic cancer.
After graduating from Regis, Kevin earned a full
scholarship to Catholic University in Washington,
D.C. and graduated Phi Betta Kappa. He went
on with his interest in acting and appeared in
a variety of shows off Broadway for five years
before moving into the travel business. That
career led him to move to Florida where he lived
until his death.

Frank Figlozzi retired from the government in
1998 and started a computer help business
shortly thereafter. He makes computer house
calls (troubleshooting, training, installation) and
the business is still going strong after ten years.
Most customers are home-based businesses in
the local area and Frank views the part-time work
as challenging and enjoyable. He volunteers
for the City of Bowie (Maryland) Information
Technology Committee, and also teaches some
classes and workshops at nearby Prince George’s
Community College. For the past thirty-five years,
he has been a music director at his church in
Bowie, Sacred Heart, where he plays guitar and
leads a contemporary choral group. Frank has
been married since 1964 and has two children
and two grandchildren. His wife, Joan, is retired
as a high school math teacher, but keeps busy
babysitting for the grandchildren. In May, while
at the Science, Industry and Business Library in
NYC where his wife Kristin is the director, Don
McDonough ran into Joe Murray, who was on
the faculty at Regis during our freshman and
sophomore years (home room teacher in 1A and
advisor for the freshmen Hearn debaters). Don
and Kristin were attending a talk given by Joe’s
nephew about Joe’s grandfather, Thomas Murray,
an inventor who had 462 patents registered in
the early 1900’s. Joe introduced them to his wife,
and Don claims that he hasn’t changed much,
except for the white hair. Jim Bonnell reports
that the new American International School in
Lahore, Pakistan has successfully completed its
first year, with pupils in pre-school, kindergarten
and first grade. Next year it will expand up
to grade 5, and eventually to grade 12. The
curriculum is based on the American model, but
also includes elements of the Pakistani National
Curriculum. Jim is the director of the school and
his wife, Maisae Affour, is the assistant director.
Kevin O’Neill is a Professor of Philosophy at the
University of Redlands in Redlands, California.
Kevin joined the university’s Johnston College
faculty in 1969, and teaches philosophy and
interdisciplinary humanities. Tom Murphy is
retiring from the Department of Chemistry at
the University of Maryland after 39 years. Tom
Walsh is spending his winters in Hilton Head,
SC. He heads for Ireland this June, where he
has never visited, although both his parents
were born there. Don Gorman and his wife
Valerie are enjoying retirement as full timers in
Bonita Springs, Florida, but get up to Darien,
Connecticut every summer for about a month.
They have two grandchildren and a third on
the way from son Chris and his wife back in
Connecticut. Their other son Pete and his wife
live in San Francisco. Rich Loeffler is working
again this summer at Monmouth Park in the
Admissions Department. He has also added the
Monmouth-Ocean Food Bank to his long list
of volunteer activities. Leo Tymon and his wife
Marie-France returned from Seattle after a visit
in May with his daughter Lydia and her husband.
Lydia is a master’s degree candidate in the
Forestry Resources Department at the University
of Washington. They even managed to see the

working overtime at the Brooklyn Brewery to stay atop current industry trends and innovations.

celebrated the 40th anniversary of his ordination
as a Maryknoll priest. John has served in China,
Egypt, Japan, Palestine and Yemen.

Good news: the response for a get-together of
the 1956 Entering Class in the Fall has been very
positive. If anyone knows the whereabouts or
contact info for any of the entering class that did
not graduate with us, please forward it to me
ASAP. Meanwhile, here are the latest Prowlings,
with some of the responses to the reunion idea
included: Bill Smith: “I would come down for the
Fall reunion party which you propose...I retired
from psychiatric nursing in 2005. Now I teach
Spanish part-time at a cool little high school. I
memorize preludes and fugues, and then watch
them disappear over the horizon. I sing bass in
an Episcopal church choir. The four offspring are
upstanding and outstanding: soul-savers, if you
ask me. One of them has two fine children. The
two of us, Joanne and I, keep house and garden,
keep track of one another, try to keep track of our
friends.” In fact, last summer, Bill tracked some
down in France: Bill, John Ward, & Charlie Altieri
gathered at Dick Pyatok Weber’s house in
Provence to celebrate the completion of its
renovation. Begun in 1123 as part of the Knights
Templar’s ramparts in the hill village of Cairanne,

the house overlooks vineyards, olive groves, and
the Rhone valley, with Mont Ventoux & the
Dentelles de Montmirail towering on the
horizon. Says Dick: “Of course we chatted in
Latin throughout.” Well Dick, maybe you, John
and Bill ...but Charlie? (just kidding, Charlie.) By
the way, Dick has a new novel out in June, in
Spanish, titled “Infierno en el paraiso” which will
be put out in an English version later (maybe
Latin too?). Charlie Nastro: “I think your idea of
a get-together this spring would be terrific. Jug
nights are always a hit or miss. I don’’t have too
much in the way of Prowlings. You knew I retired
in 2003. We still live in NYC but spend the
summers in Williamstown where I am trying to
learn to play golf for the 20th time. My eldest
daughter Caroline got married last year and I
only have three more to go, including my twin
daughters. My son, Joe, is the chef at a new
restaurant in Great Barrington, MA., ‘Allium’
which has got some very nice reviews. If you ever
get up that way, it’’s a great place to dine without
the NYC prices. Hope to see you soon.” We hope
so too, Charlie...in the Fall, not in the Spring--try
to curb your enthusiasm a little longer! Jim
Doran is on the mend and remarried to
Georgiana, a resident physician here who
practiced nephrology in Romania. She has a son
who is entering Rochester Institute of
Technology in the fall. Jim’s two sons in Jersey
are doing well. The older, Chris, is entering
Messiah College in Grantham, PA. Rob is in
Paramus High School; he’s been making shrewd

busy, too, tracing his family roots, becoming
‘acquainted’ with some great-grandparents who
came over from Ireland in 1851 due to the
famine. He recently discovered some cousins in
California and upstate New York as well as a
cousin Liz who is a Democratic delegate from
Alaska for Obama. Jim wants to share some
more of his experiences in the next Prowlings.

interesting news for ‘Prowlings’... well, I have
four grandchildren, which is VERY interesting to
me - but probably not to anyone else. I think I’ll

to celebrate being an old geezer, I might as well
wait until I can wear the title officially.” Ken,
congratulations on the 4 grandchildren! As to
the pre-50th: we hereby endow on you the official
title “Old Geezer”...so now you can come. Bill
Brandt: “After 35 years with the ‘old’ AT&T, I
retired in 1998, began formation and was
ordained to the permanent Diaconate for the
Archdiocese of Atlanta in 2004. I now live in a
small country town in Alabama, where you could
best describe my wife and me (or is it my wife
and I?) as ‘empty nesters’. [Bill: “and me” is
correct--don’t let the over-compensators throw you!]
She works from home, part-time, and I am
assigned as a Deacon and Director of Religious
Education at a rural Catholic parish. I like the
idea of a gathering before the big five-oh
reunion, and with ample lead time could most
likely arrange my schedule around a trip to the
Big Apple. I’ll look for more news from you as
you hear from the guys who are a bit closer to
NYC, and thus more likely to attend. My
personal information is correct as it appears in
the Alumni database. God bless...” Great, Bill...if

should inspire our classmates who live closer...

am still teaching high school in Clarkstown,
Rockland County. I plan to retire next year after
41 years in the profession. We are empty nesters
now, with my older son at Harvard Divinity
School and my younger son a student dancer
with the Pittsburgh Ballet Theater. Are you
planning already for the 50th reunion in 2010? I
would certainly like to attend that.” Great, Pat...

Werwaiss continues running his Real Estate
development business with a current emphasis
in Long Island City, Queens, where he is
developing commercial/industrial/retail
properties in that rapidly-changing
neighborhood. Beth, his wife of 42 years, is the
current President of Marymount School, from
which she graduated in 1961. There are 3
Werwaiss children: Christian, who works for a
green world philanthropic group in D.C.;
Gretchen, an attorney in a large NYC firm and
the current President of the Queens Museum in
Queens, NY; and John ‘91, who is a private
equity investor with a large buyout fund and also
a Director of St. Vincent’s Catholic Hospital &
Medical Center in Greenwich Village, and Fidelis
NY, a Managed Care Insurance Company. John is
also a Regent of Georgetown University and a
member of the National Leadership Roundtable
on Church Management which is advocating for
financial transparency and better administrative
operation of Catholic Dioceses and churches and
organizations. Congratulations to John and Beth
–hope we see them in the Fall. Tom Kiernan gives
us a 40-year bio in just a few lines: “Assuming
you are not put off by ‘too mundane’-- in
addition to tolerating ‘too trivial’-- I got a BA in
English from Fordham (paraphrasing Fr. Casey’s
‘guidance’: Tom, if you have no idea what you
want to do with your life, it is a ‘universal’
degree); an uncle got me a slot in the NY
National Guard so I avoided Nam. I lucked into
a job as a maritime claims adjuster: between
graduating Fordham and my 6-month active duty
period, I sold life insurance; when I finished
artillery training at Ft. Sill, ‘insurance’ was the
only work experience I had; I went to the

Fordham placement office where there was one
card under the ‘insurance’ section; I called the
number and asked for an interview; when I sat
down with the department head, one of his first
questions was how I found out about the
opening--turns out the card was two years old,
the person who had been hired had just given
notice. That job launched my thirty-five years in
the maritime liability claims field with marine
transport lines, sea-land service and csx
corporation, which retired me in 2001. My one-
man consultant’s operation closed last year.
Carol and I married in 1966. Our three sons and
five grandchildren (3 to 18) live in the New York
metropolitan area. My job transferred us from
New Jersey to Mint Hill, a suburb of Charlotte,
NC, in 1995. We really enjoy the people and life-
style in this part of the upper south. Yankee pay
scales and pensions go a long way here,
compared to NJ-NY. An identifying quirk: Carol
and I do all our traveling by SUV as we are
always accompanied by two golden retrievers.”
Tom, maybe with the price of gas you should get
a team of Huskies to pull the SUV...but if you
come to the Fall reunion, Paduano and Werweiss
might chip in and buy you a tank. Brian Morrow:

Art Trufelli: “I think the last time I saw you was
on a subway platform about 45 years ago. I
moved from Bayside to Florida in 1987 the first
time I retired. I’ve had a small real estate
practice here for 20 years and just retired for
real. My daughters are both married, one a
marine scientist, the other an early ed teacher.
The marine scientist has given us a 3-year-old
grandson and is working on number two. Now
that the real estate market is dead I have been
working on my handicap. I had been looking for
Freddy Toscano for years and found him visiting
his sister in Vero Beach last year. He hasn’t
changed much, still singing doo wop, and
enjoying the passage of time. I’d love to know
what happened to Richie Walsh. I met him at St
Peter’s College in the 60’s but lost track of him
after I left for my semesters abroad in Viet
Nam... By the way, I’m in for the separate class
reunion.” Great, Art...and thanks for Freddy’s e-
mail address--he promised that if we can find
Richie Walsh, he’d join you and Richie at our
reunion and do a reprise of your performance on
the 1957 boat ride to Bear Mountain! Steve
Greene: “I am happy to report that my daughter,
Jennifer, just received her Ph.D. in Clinical
Psychology from Fordham. After a BA from
Dartmouth and an MA from Columbia she finally
recognized the need for a Jesuit influence. She is
currently finishing her internship requirement at
NY Presbyterian Hospital. Her main research
has been at Sloan Kettering with terminally-ill
cancer patients and the issues associated with
end-of-life family support. To say she is an angel
is an understatement and we are very proud of
her. My son, Stephen, a USMA grad, is an
attorney in NYC. Arlene and I are also the happy
(and busy) grandparents of four - with number 5
scheduled for arrival in November!”

Joe V.: Chris & I are planning a cruise in August
to Alaska to see the glaciers before they all melt
away, with our son Gary, a lawyer in Florida, his
wife and two sons, 13 and 9. Our daughter,
Kellyanne, lives in Syosset and has 3 little ones.
Chris is a social worker at the NYC Department
of Ed working in the elementary schools, but is
seriously considering “graduating” from there; I
still head up a public defender office in Queens.
We’re both trying to figure out “what we want to
be when we grow up.” Chris and I both look
forward to seeing some old friends in the Fall. If

Bob Sheehan reports that “I am ‘stepping down’
as Executive Partner of Skadden Arps at the
end of my third 5-year term in April ‘09. I don’t
know what I’ll be doing in my last 5+ years as
partner thereafter--other than to encourage my
partners to succeed, and to play a lot of golf--as

the course in Southwest Florida in May. Once
again Dave Birch, Curt Brand, Greg Burke, Ned
Butler, John Paxton and Bob Radics joined this

writer in playing golf (see photo) on some of the
nicest private courses in the area. Dave Barry
joined play on the first day but had to depart for
a business trip. Dave splits his time between
Bonita Beach, FL and Rye, NY. Curt won the
“Owl” golf hat emblematic of supremacy over
the six-day event. It had to be honest since
Ned did the scoring. John James and Jerry La
Russo almost made the group this year which
would have caused problems for most of us
because these guys can play the game. Bob
Radics went home to attend to the birth of a
grandchild, proudly reporting that his son and
daughter-in-law, Gregory and Susan, welcomed
the first girl born to the Radics’ family in two
generations: Avery Marie Radics, on May 24,
2008. Round that same time, May 27th actually,
Judy and Curt Brand left on a trip to South
Africa. The primary purpose was to catch-up
with their daughter, Kathryn, who is doing a stint
for the Peace Corps in Malawi. Back in April
Pat and I caught up for lunch with John Shay in
New Canaan, CT. John, who had attended Jack
McCarthy’s wake and funeral, and we reminisced
about our departed friend. John also regaled us
with some of the latest news about Mia Farrow,
a good friend, who has established a non-profit
organization to help the refugees from Darfur.
Tony McGuire reports that he and Wayne Merritt
“once again gathered with college friends to
enjoy “golf” together. This year we did it at
Hilton Head. I refrain from any comments on
the quality of golf because friendship prevailed.”
John Yacobellis ’55 and Bill Brennan ’55 met up
recently; John is a director of golf instruction
and Bill is retired in the Denver area. In addition
to their fond memories of Regis, they discussed
John’s recent articles about the game of golf and
how he teaches amateurs to play like the pros

grandchild on April 9, 2008. She is Sarah Jane
(Sadie) McGuire who was born to son, Chris,

world, we learned that number seven is coming
this December to our youngest, Susan McGuire
Shay who is living in San Francisco after seven

Our class celebrated its forty-fifth anniversary
with a Friday night celebration (4/11/08) at
Slattery’s Pub on East 36th Street and mass and
dinner at Regis on Saturday 12 April 2008. Prior
to the evening events, John Tuccillo presented
a session on the current Real Estate crisis as
part of the Classroom Revisited program held
annually. John was entertaining and informative.
Don Gannon celebrated the mass with Ray
Sweitzer and Phil Judge ’80 as con-celebrants.
Everyone present enjoyed the dinner and chatted
amicably about events of the past few years.
All were saddened by the recent deaths of
Charlie Zabrowski and George Healy. Bill Brown
returned to Regis for the first time in decades.

On 17 May, the afore-mentioned Elisabeth Prael,
through the NYC chapter of the Vanderbilt
University Alumni Association, led a number of
Regis graduates on an educational tour of the
Brooklyn Brewery. Continuing their education by
viewing production techniques and tasting the
resulting excellent products on site were Owen
Reidy ’99, Ted Stenger ’02, Luke MacCarthy
and the Jack Prael. While basking in this
illuminating imbibing extravaganza, the troop
met Matt McCann ’97 who was also increasing
his knowledge base with a number of associates
from work, many of whom are members of the
bar.

Rob Kalisch is in his 19th year as public defender
with the state of New Jersey, traveling regularly
to Europe with his wife, Allyson, an executive
with SAS. They can be found often in the UK,
France, Portugal, and Scandinavia- two steps
ahead of Carmen Sandiego. Dave O’Brien is
practicing, while striving for “perfecting,” law
in Long Beach, NY. Daughters all doing fine,
life is worth living. Eddie O’Brien is in his 10th
year of managing community reinvestment
for Ridgewood Savings Bank, meeting many
a Regian along the way. Happy to be back
at JUG night, the old stories get better and
better. Joe Featherson makes a triumphant
return after decades of mystery. He is 10 years
married, proud father of a 5 year old, Joseph.
He is assistant principal at Channel View HS
in Rockaway Beach, Queens, and Director of
Special Olympics at the St. Camillus training
site. He pledges he’ll be back soon. Joe Lyons
is working (diligently?) with the regulatory
department of JP Morgan Chase, and living
vicariously through his children, having visited
his son in China last April. Don Ulisse is still
gainfully retired, selling insurance to ward off
approaching senility, and trying his hardest to
just stay out of the way.

Frank Belloni has been at New York Medical
College for 27 years, where he is now graduate
dean. He still teaches physiology and now
medical ethics and research ethics. Robert
Thoms is back from “Tramping” on Milford
Track in New Zealand. Charles Webel is teaching
“Logic” and “Terrorism” at the University of
New York in Prague, possibly the furthest SUNY
outpost. His students, though, may experience
his courses as “The Logic of Terrorism” and
“TheTerrorism of Logic.” His two most recent
books, “Terror, Terrorism, and the Human
Condition,” and “Peace and Conflict Studies”
(with David Barash) are now or soon to be in
paperback editions.Charles is also Fulbright
Senior Specialist in Peace and Conflict Studies,
and he would welcome Regians to Czech out
Prague. Bob Piliero merged his law firm’s
practice into Butzel Long in December 2007. Still
concentrating his practice in the area of complex
commercial litigations and arbitrations, Bob’s
affiliation with Butzel Long’s recently established

Spring break in Abu Dhabi? A bit
unconventional, but it made sense for Donna
and Kieran Quinn since daughter Kerry and son-
in-law Patrick Granfield decamped last winter
to the fast growing metropolis on the Persian
Gulf, where Patrick works for The National, the
emirate’s start-up, English-language newspaper.
The Quinns managed three days in Paris en
route home to Atlanta. In these times of turmoil
in the mortgage markets, Kieran is winding up
a one-year stint as chairman of the Mortgage
Bankers Association. The Mortgage Banker, the
trade group’s magazine, recounted the KQ life
in full in a New Yorker-length profile that even
updated readers on his Mom, still going strong
in Stuyvesant Town at 95. Curious? Google
“Quintessential Quinn” and Mortgage Banker.
Our man in Chicago, Bob DeCresce, and wife
Mary spent a fortnight in May hiking and biking
in Italy, and happily returned intact. Son Evan is
in law school and David starts medical school in
September “so I won’t be planning retirement
any time soon,” Bob reports. He chairs the
Department of Pathology at Rush University
Medical Center, and recently was elected
president of the 1000-member medical staff “in
an honest election!” We’d expect nothing less
in the Windy City. Stephen Malone is a financial
exec at the large European aerospace firm
who is the parent company of Airbus. They are
the recent winner of the $35 Bln USAF Tanker
contract and also won an Army 350 helicopter
contract last year. He and his wife Maureen
celebrated their 36th anniversary last year. They
have three children (doctor, lawyer and, as the
ditty goes, [almost] an Indian chief). Youngest (a
Dartmouth grad) is an equestrian (professional
show jumping). He makes enough to cover his
living expenses, but his sponsor (Stephen) has
to pay the horse bills.

Tom Kelly’s son, Thomas, will attend Holy
Cross in the Fall after graduating from Loyola
School (83rd St.). His daughter, Caitlin, has

recently participated in the Twelfth Cardinal
Bernardin Conference of the Catholic Common
Ground Initiative (under the National Pastoral
Life Center) in Chicago. The theme was,
“Understanding the Ecclesial Movements and
their Interaction with the Local Church in the US
Today.” Among the other 40 participants was Fr.
Robert Imbelli ‘56 of Boston College. Scheduled

girl from China and expect to pick her up this
June! This year Michael Mendeszoon became
President of the Medical Board of Kings County
Hospital which is a term for 2 years. He also is
chairing the Health and Hospitals Corporation’s
Perioperative Task Force which will cover the
11 city hospital system. Following a festive
introduction by “Commissioner” Jack Prael ‘63,
Stan Parchin delivered his Classroom Revisited
lecture, “From Mesopotamia to Mona Lisa:
Science in the Service of Art History.” This
year, he was “promoted” to Regis’ fifth-floor
Chemistry Lecture Hall, where Bob Spring ‘58
ran Stan’s animated PowerPoint presentation.
Father Ray Sweitzer, S.J. ‘63 (a neophyte), Mark
Kolakowski ‘77, alumni and parents were in
attendance. A lively and informative time was
had by all, followed by questions and answers in
the cafeteria during lunch. Stan and Father Ray
subsequently traveled to see “An Educated Eye:
Princeton University Art Museum Collections”
in New Jersey. In the meantime, Stan has been
corresponding with Clara Pauker, Armando’s
nine-year-old daughter and a budding museum
curator. Her questions about ancient civilizations
and their art have kept Stan very busy. He can’t
wait for her return trip to The Metropolitan
Museum of Art. Bernie Kilkelly writes that the
Class of ’78 had a great 30th Reunion on April
5 with over 25 classmates and several former
teachers returning to Regis. Saul Pedrera
and Kevin Rush came in early from southern
California and met up the night before with Chris
McCarthy, John McAndrew, Bob Marraccino,
Larry Ehmer and me at the Heartland Brewery
in Times Square. Saul is a long-time resident
of San Diego and avid Chargers fan, and Kevin
continues to write plays and screenplays and
work on breaking into the movie business. John
McAndrew also traveled a long way, coming up
from his home on the Gulf Coast of Mississippi.
At the reunion on Saturday, our class enjoyed
the tour of Regis, which brought back great
memories and also admiration for the many
improvements to the school. The award for
longest absence from the school went to Kurt
Freund, who told me he hadn’t been back since
college years. Kurt is enjoying life on Martha’s
Vineyard where he is captain of a charter fishing
boat, Fishsticks Charters. Mike Mah resides
at the other end of Massachusetts in the
Berkshires and continues to travel extensively
as a speaker and consultant on information
technology issues. Also in the technology field
is Armando Pauker, who came in from Chicago
where he is a general partner in a technology
venture capital firm. Larry Ehmer and Linda
and Greg Tino came up from the Philly area
where Larry helps run a computer consulting
firm and Dr. Greg is a pulmonary specialist at
UPenn Hospital. Tom Doyle lives outside of
Washington DC and continues to work in law
enforcement as a federal special agent for the
FDA. Among the attendees from the New Jersey
side of Hudson were Phil Guarco, Lisa and Ken
Sullivan, Millie and Dave Rodriguez, Sheila and
John Goggins and Al Rocco, who brought Lou
DiBella as his surprise date. Tom Burgess and
Sharon and Jack Fowler made the trip in from
the far suburbs of Connecticut, while Susan
and Jim Olivo came in from Westchester, where
Jim is training intensively for the NY Marathon
this November. Joe Marconi and I talked about
organizing a Long Island mini-reunion, and Rich
McGraw, Bob Marraccino, Jim Rohan and Stan
Parchin represented the five boroughs. Stan had
an overflow crowd at his Classroom Revised
lecture this year, titled “From Mesopotamia to
Mona Lisa: Science in the Service of Art History.”
Rob McKenna was sorely missed at the reunion
but was busy trying to improve the Knicks by
getting his son Mike a tryout at Madison Square
Garden. Our class enjoyed reminiscing with
former teachers Jerry Kappes ‘52, John Mullin
‘66 and Greg Rapisarda. Special thanks go out to
our beloved art teacher, Hilda O’Connell-Harris,
who started off our reunion day with a lecture on
Gustave Courbet (thanks also to Stan Parchin for
arranging the lecture). Hilda gave a preview of
the special exhibit going on at the Metropolitan
Museum of Art, which the lecture attendees
then went to see. We were saddened to hear
about the death of Hilda’s husband Mike Harris
on April 14 after a long illness. The Class of ’78
joins the whole Regis community in offering our
condolences.

next year for the wedding. Chris Butler happily
reports that he and his wife Tara were blessed
with their third child, Michael Andrew, on March
13. Several members of the class of 89 were part
of the championship winning team in the Regis
Alumni Basketball League. Steve Carbone, Jim
McCue, Matt McGowan, Kevin Sullivan and
myself joined our elders from the class of 88 to
win the title. We defeated the Class of 2003 (we
were at Regis when many of them were born) in
the championship game by the final score of 54-
46. As usual, playing in the league provided the
opportunity to enjoy some fun competition and
plenty of laughs. We had a few minor injuries,
but everyone should be healthy enough to take a
shot at defending our title next season. Following
two tumultuous and wonderful years at Bear
Stearns, Jerry Russello has joined the New
York office of Bingham McCutchen LLP as Of
Counsel, where he will continue his regulatory/
securities enforcement practice.

Steven Shekane and his wife Tracy are proud
to announce the birth of their second child,
Alexander George Shekane, on May 29th,
2008. Alex weighed 7lbs 14 oz and measured
19.75 inches. Mom and baby are doing well
and big sister, Samantha, loves the new addition
to the family. Alex has already started studying
for the Regis Entrance Exam in 2021. Joe Mecca
writes: “My wife & I welcomed our first child,
Michael Joseph, into the world on March 2nd,
2008. I’ve included a photo from his recent
Christening (June 7th) which was celebrated by
Fr. Dan O’Reilly. Christian Talbot was also in
attendance as Michael’s godfather. In addition,
I just completed the full-time MBA program
at Columbia Business School and am eager to
return to the workforce so I can put some bread
on the table for the little one. Hope to see you
guys soon!” Finally, thanks to all that attended
our 15 year Reunion back in April. It was a
tremendous event and we had a great turnout.
Hopefully, it won’t be five years before we all get
together again, but until then, stay classy, Class
of ’93.

Tim and his wife, Jennifer, had a son, Brendan
Robert, on April 11, 2008. After 6 years in
financial services, most recently in Compliance
Dave Anfora ’98 and Rolando Garcia ’98 at the
10th reunion on June 21st.
at Fidelity Investments, Ryan Mulderrig has
decided to return to school for a Masters degree
in Higher Education at Boston College. The
move was partially spurred by his continued
involvement in Ignatian/Jesuit Spirituality
at BC. His end goal is to devote himself to
the continuing advancement of Jesuit higher
education. During his time in this program he
will be working in the First Year Experience office
and invites any Regians to drop by to say hello.
John Power is in his last year of law school at
Washington & Lee. He spent the summer of
2007 in Chicago, working at Jenner & Block.
John writes, “The summer was great, but 3rd
year is busy as can be.” Before studying law, John
wrote a novel entitled Golden Freedom, available
at http://www.lulu.com/content/133958. Mike
Luzung is nursing a broken leg in sunny San
Diego, CA. Mike, the most dangerous Organic
Chemist in North America, sustained his
injury while training for a mixed martial arts
competition. We wish him the speediest of
recoveries, and hope the other guy has a good
head start. Despite reports of the following,
Aleks Mehrle is not working at the US Patent
Office. After moving to Washington, DC, Aleks
accepted a job as an associate licensing council
with Audio MPEG, a patent management and
licensing company headquartered outside of
Turin, Italy. Aleks works out of the DC office,
and welcomes our classmates in the area to
drop him a line anytime. Stephen Della Penna
is living in Woburn, MA, just outside of Boston,
working for New York Life. He writes, “I’ve got
an insurance license for life and health and a
securities license, and basically I meet with
individuals, couples, and small businesses
setting up financial plans for them. Wish I had
found the place sooner, cause it fits me very
well.” Justin Dillon transferred to the London
office of ING in January. He sends his regards
from across the pond, and regrets missing the
10 year reunion. James Peiser married Meridith
Burkus on Friday, June 13th at the Tribeca
Rooftop. The weather treated the happy couple
well - the day was sunny and warm, and guests
at the reception caught the sunset over Jersey
City before dancing the night away. Also in
attendance were classmates Russell Capone,
Mike Griffin, Dan Kirchoff, John Morris and
James Murphy. Three non-’98ers joined the
celebration: Sam Valverde ‘00, Joe Peiser ‘82 and
Rick Peiser ‘70.

graduated from the Albert Einstein College of
Medicine of Yeshiva University. He finished with
a distinction in Cardiovascular Research. Next,
he will be doing an Internal Medicine Residency

Jerry Castania is attending Cooper Union for
his masters in structural engineering. He is
also working full time as an engineer. Ending
his 2 years with JVI in the Pacific, Mike Cruz
finished production of a digital feature funded
by UNESCO and a local NGO in the Marshall
Islands. The release date in the RMI was set
for May 8th for the Parliment, and May 9th
in all local theatres. After some traveling in
the summer he will hopefully be starting at
Chapman’s Film Conservatory in September.

Gregory Caravelli graduated from Johns Hopkins
University in 2007 and received the Kerr Medal
as the outstanding undergraduate in physics. He
has just completed his first year of graduate

Innovation and Excellence in Teaching.

Dave Carretero graduated Fordham University summa cum laude with
a B.S. in Physics, and is off to Cambridge University in the fall to pursue
a Ph.D. in Physics. As he prepares to graduate in June with degrees in
Theater and German, Joseph Borkowski readies himself for a career in
special education, as a Teach for America South Dakota Corps member.
In his last year at Swarthmore, Joseph co-directed the North American
premiere of Dea Loher’s Innocence (Unschuld) and translated Jan
Kochanowski’s 1578 “Dismissal of the Greek Envoys” from Polish to
English for use in supertitles in the DIALOG international theater festival
in Wroclaw. Joseph had previously served as the assistant director for that
production while studying in Poland, and the production has been featured
in festivals throughout the country; he hopes to rejoin it for a 2009
American premiere in Philadelphia. Joseph welcomes any Regian coming
through Houston this June and early July, when he will be in training for
his position in South Dakota in August. He can be reached eternally at
