Induction heating :
It is the process of heating an electrically conducting object (usually a metal) by electromagnetic
induction, where eddy currents are generated within the metal and resistance leads to Joule heating
of the metal. An induction heater (for any process) consists of an electromagnet, through which a
high-frequency alternating current (AC) is passed. Heat may also be generated by magnetic
hysteresis losses in materials that have significant relative permeability. The frequency of AC used
depends on the object size, material type, coupling (between the work coil and the object to be
heated) and the penetration depth.

Induction heating allow the targeted heating of an applicable item for applications including surface
hardening, melting, brazing and soldering and heating to fit.

Bearing :
It is a device to allow constrained relative motion between two or more parts, typically rotation or
linear movement.

Bearing Heater :
The Bearing heaters use the principle of electrical induction to generate heat. It is basically done by
putting the bearing as the secondary coil on type of transformer. The primary coil, with a large
number of windings, is then connected to high voltage, causing a low current to pass through the
coil. This will create a magnetic field flowing through the mutual iron core, inducing low voltage and
a very high current in the bearing. The electrical resistance of the bearing will thus cause it to heat
rapidly.

Application:

The Bearing heaters are used to heat bearings prior to mounting them with a shrink fit.The
heater can also be used for heating any other machinery component made of metal and
forming a closed electrical loop such as bushings, labyrinth rings, shrink rings, belt pulleys,
gears, etc
Project Description :
Our project is mainly consist of heating of bearings by induction principle & control this heating
process by using microcontroller. We are using thyristor device (like Triac) to control i/p(230 V/50 Hz
mains) supply. For this we are giving pulses to it’s Gate drive by using microcontroller. In heating
assembly copper wire is wounded around metal core & bearings slots are kept on same core. I/p
supply is given to the copper winding via thyristor device & this supply is controlled by
microcontroller. Heating of bearing is sensed by temperature transducer & it’s signal conditioning is
done & is given to ADC which is connected to microcontroller. Also signal conditioning of both
current & voltage source is given to ADC. The kea-board & LCD display is connected to
microcontroller to give set-point values & display result. For this Keyboard & display interfacing
program, also ADC interfacing program & Program for output pulse from microcontroller to Gate
terminal of thyristor is required .
The Block diagram of overall assembly is as follows,
