0 Executive Summary

This report provides an analysis and evaluation of the current situation of solid waste
management and resource recovery strategy. The research was carried out by a group of
Environmental Engineering (BFC 32403) at Faculty of Technology Management and
Business, FPTP, UTHM, Johor. The data was collected through questionnaire form
method and all 10 staffs and janitors were targeted as the respondents. The data collected
then was analysed and presented in pie chart and bar chart form. A set of questionnaire
can be found in the appendices. The data from the questionnaire show the weight of solid
waste recycle, how the management of solid waste in process of disposal. Results of data
analysed show that the waste management at FPTP, UTHM are below satisfied.
However, most of the staff are aware about the importance of solid waste management.
The faculty need to be improve in recycle section, to strengthened and diversify the way
of recycle, reduce, and reuse.

2.0 Introduction

Solid waste management is a term that is used to refer to the process of collecting and
treating solid wastes. It also offers solutions for recycling items that can be reuse again for
another products which also helps to reduce the wastes. As long as people have been living in
settlements and residential areas, garbage or solid waste will always be an issues. Waste
management is all about how solid waste can be changed and used as a valuable resources.
Solid waste management should be embraced by each and every household including the
business owners across the world. Industrialization has brought a lot of good things and bad
things as well. One of the negative effects of industrialization is the creation of solid waste.

Tonnes of solid waste is disposed-off at various landfill sites every-day. This waste comes
from homes, offices, industries and various other agricultural related activities. These landfill
sites produce foul smell if the wastes is not stored and treated properly. It can pollute the
surrounding air and can seriously affect humans welfare, wildlife and our environment.

As in this semester, group 4 from section 7 of the subject of Environmental Engineering

(BFC 32403) are required to construct a questionnaire regarding to the waste management
and resource recovery strategy as the course project. The group shall having respondents
from the cleaner or staff in FPTP, inside UTHM.

3.0 Background

3.1 Scope Of Study

We are required to conduct a survey about waste management and resource recovery
strategy in University Tun Hussein Onn Malaysia (UTHM) area. In our project, it has been
decided by the lecturer for us to collect the data specifically from the Faculty of Technology
Management and Business which is located beside the Faculty of Technical and Vocational
Education. The requirement of the respondents background for this survey, are workers that
work as a cleaner or staff that are responsible for the building cleanliness.

4.0 Objectives

1. To study the waste management and resource recovery strategy at the Faculty of
Technology Management and Business, UTHM.
2. To summarize and analyse the data obtained from the Faculty of Technology
Management and Business.

As a conclusion, we can say that the respondents are always inspired in
emphasizing and spread the importance of recycling.

6.0 Discussions and Recommendations

6.1 Discussions

We have conducted a survey about ‘Waste Management and Resource Recovery

Strategy for UTHM’ which are conducted at the Faculty of Technology Management and
Business (FPTP).
The questionnaire has been distributed to respondent, which we can conclude that
there are 10 respondents that had been participated in these surveys which are from the
staff and cleaner. The total gender for the respondents are 1 male and 9 female.
Based on the data analysis, most of staff are aware about the Solid Waste
Management knowledge. From the data, we conclude that the hard waste materials are
mostly came from cans, bottles, plastics, food wastes and papers. We also found that
papers is the most hard waste materials that been produced. This is because the staff of
that faculty are mostly lecturers that are using materials of reference such as journals or
past exams paper to teach their students.
Most of the staff recycling the items are because they wanted to earn money and help
the environment. They said, they can get RM30 in two weeks for recycling 7kg of waste
materials which is RM 4.20 per kg. Half of the respondents rarely separate the waste. The
waste materials like food waste will be throw into a regular bin. All the trash that has
been produced will be gathered by the staff in one place (behind the FPTP building) and
then it will be collected using a lorry by contractor.

Page | 9
There are no recycle bin that are placed anywhere in the building area. The recycle
bin was here in this faculty, but was removed for 4 years without any reason or notice. In
conclusion, we conclude that this faculty did not have or promote the 3R programmes.

6.2 Recommendations

As we could see from our topic, solid waste management, it is clearly stated that it is about
managing and processing the solid waste matter either by recycling or through any common
or regular waste management system. Interviews and questionnaires has been conducted to
the staffs and the conductor of solid waste (cleaners) that are working in the faculty. Through
the survey we could see and understand that respondents strongly suggest recycling is the
best method or way to minimise the recyclable or disposable waste by disposing it using
recycling bin. There is also a strong evidence and respond from them that the recycling bin
are not situated at places although the bin seems to be usable by the users (students and
staffs). These respondents has been picking up and collecting the recyclable items inside the
regular bin as none of the people is concern to throw it in a proper recycling bin since there is
no recycle bin that are prepared near the faculty area to begin with.

As the suggestion, the management of university should take an immediate action on bringing
back the recycling bin and locate it near the normal regular bin in all area. They should also
notified the staffs, students or anyone at the faculty to use the recycling bin in a proper way.
Students should be encourage to get involve or volunteer on doing a recycling program once
a week and as a reward, they will gain credit points through their SMAP. To promote
recycling awareness, posters can be printed out and paste on all notice boards. We could also
design a bunting or a poster promoting the advantages of recycling and their effects on the
environment.

The management should also recommend and introduce the usage amount of papers and
suggest to use recycled high-grade papers for any photocopy process. The café and coop mart
at the faculty must be advise from using plastic beg for every package and prefer the
customers to bring their own recycling beg or prepare a used box for them to keep the bought
items. The management also shouldn’t allow those who selling plastic mineral water bottles a
lot as this may cause amounts of plastic bottles to increase and suggest a filter pipe machine
for students and stuffs to refill their empty used bottles. Finally, an audit based on waste
should be carried out to make an awareness for the new generations.

7.0 Conclusion

From the above title and survey which has been conducted, we can conclude that the
environment must be taken care of while also at the same time raising awareness and the
responsibilities about saving the environment among people. Through this survey we can also
conclude that the staff and cleaners are recycling the waste to earn money for themselves.
Although most of the people in the FPTP faculty do the waste recycling, there are always few
irresponsible people that refuse to properly practice the manners and didn’t even bother to
help saving the environment. As our objectives to observe and finding out the methods on
managing and handling the solid waste at the FPTP area, we could see that the faculty
strategy in handling their solid waste was not really satisfied since it could be improve more
by doing the recommendations that we mention earlier in this report. By doing so, the faculty
could have a better solid waste management system and a much cleaner environment for the
staff and students to live on.
