TRAVEL REPORT

I. EXECUTIVE SUMMARY
The PCP is the umbrella organization of internists in the Philippines and was organized 61 years
ago, in 1953. The 3 main reasons for its existence are: Continuing Medical Education of internists and
other physicians; Certification and Regulation of the Subspecialty of Internal Medicine; and
Accreditation and Certification of the Training Programs for Internal Medicine in the Philippines. The PCP
is an affiliate society of the Philippine Medical Association and a member-society of the International
Society of Internal Medicine.. The College has 18 component and affiliate societies under it. It also
has 22 regional chapters nationwide and 8 chapters on NCR. This organization holds postgraduate
courses annually. Attendance to which has corresponding PMA, PCP and PAFP units.
The Philippine College of Physicians (PCP) - Eastern Visayas Chapter organized the 11th
Postgraduate Course, with the theme “A Closer Look into the Philippine Clinical Practice Guidelines for
Filipino Patients”, last February 17, 2017 at the Rose Grand Ballroom in Sabin Hotel, Ormoc City. This
was attended by health professionals such as doctors, nurses, medical technologists and midwives.
It was a one day activity with 4 plenaries and 2 scientific lectures. At exactly 9:00 am, opening
ceremonies started. The audience was welcomed by the president of PCP – EV Chapter, Dr. Vicente
Francisco F. Zeta followed by the introduction to the postgraduate course by Dr. Rhodette E. Arevalo
who was the overall chair of the event.
The first topic discussed was on the Philippine Practice Guidelines on the Diagnosis and
Management of Stroke by Dr. Romulo U. Esagunde, followed by the Updated Clinical Practice Guidelines
for the Diagnosis, Treatment, Prevention and Control of Tuberculosis in Adult Filipinos by Dr. Camilo C.
Roa. A luncheon symposium about Philippine Clinical Guidelines on the Diagnosis, Empiric Management
and Prevention of Community-Acquired Pneumonia in Immunocompetent Adults was tackled by Dr.
Paula Teresa F. Sta. Maria. The third session by Dr. Alex T. Junia talked about the Philippine Practice
Guidelines on the Diagnosis and Management of Coronary Artery Disease. Finally, Dr. Nemencio A.
Nicodemus conversed about the Philippine Practice Guidelines on the Diagnosis and Management of
Diabetes. The day event was formally closed by Dr. Edwin J. Canete. The fellowship night concluded with
a scientific lecture by Dr. Nelson G. Chu, entitled Revisiting the Science and Evidence of Oral
Methylprednisolone – Focus on Obstructive Airway Disease.
The whole activity was mostly composed of medical lectures discussed by physicians on their
respective fields of specialization. There were also exhibits sponsored by pharmaceutical companies
who distributed freebies and medical samples.

afflict the Filipino people

Community Health Nursing
3. Discuss how the nursing profession can respond to these clinical guidelines in patient care

VII. ACKNOWLEDGMENT TO SPONSOR


Sending representatives from the College of Nursing would have not been possible without the approval
and support of the administration. Attendance to the seminar workshop provided new knowledge and
updates on the practice guidelines in the diagnosis and management of common diseases in the
Philippines. Furthermore, the activity was tailored for medical courses such as nursing, thus, it bears
great importance to the College. We would like to express gratitude to the VSU administration for the
