ARCHDIOCESE OF CHICAGO October, 2010
Dear Brothers and Sisters in Christ,
Last month, I received a letter from Archbishop Donald Wuerl, the Archbishop of Wash-
ington, D.C., informing me of the introduction of the cause of canonization of Mary Virginia
Merrick. Miss Mary, as she was known, grew up in a family of great wealth and privilege.
At the age of twelve, she fell while playing outdoors and was paralyzed from the waist down. From that point
onward, she used a wheelchair to get around; her mobility was limited to the use of only her hands and arms.
Nonetheless, Miss Mary continued to attend school and would accompany her mother when she went to
deliver food to the poor. Several years later, Miss Mary established The Christ Child Society, an organization
dedicated to helping needy children. Reading the story of her life was a moving experience for me. In the
midst of so many physical hardships, her response to the Lord was truly exemplary. Because of my own
physical disabilities, I was touched by her life and the spirituality she developed.
During the month of October, our parishes observe both Respect Life Month and Inclusion Awareness
Sunday. Both are critically important because of the “culture of death” so present in society… one in which
human life is disposable and the unique dignity of each person disregarded. Mary Virginia Merrick’s life is
a beautiful example of how people of all abilities have gifts to bring to the Church and society; God uses every
one of us to build up the Body of Christ.
I invite each one of you, as individuals and as members of your parish community, to reflect today on
the ways in which you can make people of differing abilities feel welcomed and appreciated. Providing every-
one with opportunities to participate in worship and in service is a demonstration of our own open hearts and
reminds us all about how much we can grow and learn when everyone is included in parish life.
May God bless all of you and your families. Each day, I remember you and your intentions before the
Lord and I ask that you remember me in your own prayers.
Sincerely, yours in Christ,

Francis Cardinal George, O.M.I.

Archbishop of Chicago
Cardinal’s letter about Inclusion Awareness Sunday and the funeral services I had last
week for 24 years old Andy who was disabled all his life made me think about people in our
parish with disabilities. Do we do everything we can for them? To improve that, I want to ask
you to let us know about people with any disabilities in our parish, especially children, so that
we could contact them and find out how can we help and make them feel welcome in the
Church of Jesus Christ.
God Bless! Fr. Rich

GREETINGS FROM FR. TOM GRIFFIN
Dear St. Albert Parishioners,
Hi! Remember me? It's been about 7 months since I last wrote to you telling you that I arrived and was
starting to be a rent-a-priest for the Archdiocese of Detroit. Well, here's the latest: Feb. 1st through June 30th -
I have worked at 22 different places. However, it has been the equivalent of full time, full pay work! It is just
that I have worked at 22 different locations instead of 1. 2 advantages of this since I am new in town: a) I now
know my way around the east side/eastern suburbs of Detroit like I was born here and b) I have gotten to
know a lot of the priests in this diocese quickly, much more so than if I had only worked here at St. Clare's.
July 1st through Aug. 31st - The former pastor here retires, making me the Administrator of St. Clare Par-
ish. I think everyone at St. Albert's knows what a temporary administrator is, think Fr. Rich! Only I was not
nearly as good. This job was anticipated to be temporary as the O.S.A. priest senior to me (and the one who had
hoped to restart an Augustinian H.S. further into the Detroit suburbs) moved back in, with the expectation that
he would be the pastor if the H.S. could not open. Our bosses did not believe that the funding was there so he
(Fr. David Brecht) became the pastor again. He had been pastor for a short time previously. That was fine with
me as I had already been offered a position as a hospital chaplain Monday through Friday, as well as weekend
work at 2 parishes regularly every weekend at parishes that I enjoyed (think St. Albert's). No more rent-a-
priest.
Sept. through today - Immediately after being named pastor, Archbishop Vigneron asks our provincial to
reconsider restarting the new H.S. and to let Fr. Brecht start immediately to open it. Our provincial agrees pro-
viding that I will quit my other jobs immediately and take over most of the St. Clare duties for him. The
Archbishop will help with the funding for the new school. Done. I am now working full time for St. Clare Parish,
like an associate (think Fr. Mariusz), while Fr. Brecht drives to a further suburb every day to restart Austin
H.S. It's OK, so far so good.
Visitors - I finally got Chicago natives to come up and visit me for the first time in the month of August! The
first tourists were from St. Albert's! 3 of the Zarnicki family (mom, dad and Nicki) came up to watch the White
Sox with me. The Stockings won 3 out of 4 in that series and were still in 1st place when they went home. What
happened? Friends from St. Pat's in Lemont and a priest classmate of mine also came up. I am doing well up
here. I went to 5 of the 9 Sox games when they played the Tigers. I hope to get to the bear game when they
come up and while the drive is twice as far I am still getting to all home Notre Dame games (plus 1 at Michigan
St.). So "Don't cry for me, Argentina" and keep those phone calls and letters coming.
Fraternally, Fr. Tom Griffin, O.S.A.

ARCHDIECEZJA CHICAGO
Drodzy Bracia i Siostry w Chrystusie,

W zeszłym miesiącu arcybiskup Waszyngtonu, D.C Donald Wuerl przysłał mi list,

w którym informuje mnie o rozpoczęciu procesu kanonizacyjnego Mary Virginii Merrick.
Panna Merrick - znana ogólnie jako Miss Mary - dorastała w rodzinie bogatej i uprzywilejowanej. Mając
dwanaście lat upadła podczas zabawy, w wyniku czego została sparaliżowana od pasa w dół. Od tej chwili
musiała używać fotela inwalidzkiego i mogła poruszać się używając wyłącznie siły swoich dłoni i ramion.
Mimo to Miss Mary nadal uczęszczała do szkoły i nadal towarzyszyła swojej matce, gdy ta szła rozdzielać
naszym społeczeństwie „kulturę śmierci”, w której człowiek uzurpuje sobie prawo do decydowania o życiu
zaoferowania Kościołowi i społeczeństwu.
widziane i doceniane. Zapewnienie każdemu możliwości udziału w nabożeństwach i praktykach religijnych
w życie parafii stwarza nam samym okazję do poszerzenia horyzontów i do duchowego wzrastania.
Niech Bóg błogosławi wam i waszym rodzinom. Każdego dnia zwracając sie do Pana pamiętam o was
i waszych intencjach. Proszę, pamiętajcie o mnie w waszych modlitwach.
Szczerze oddany w Chrystusie,

Francis Kardynał George, O.M.I. , Arcybiskup Chicago

otaczamy dostateczną opieką duchową i duszpasterską wszystkich ludzi niepełnosprawnych, szczególnie
w naszej parafii.
spotkanie Młodzieży Polonijnej Archidiecezji Chicago w sobotę, 16-go października, 2010 od 9:00 a.m.
do 1:30 p.m. w Kościele Św. Ferdynanda 5900 W. Barry, Chicago. W programie Msza Święta i spotkanie
z Kardynalem Franciszkiem George oraz video o pracy misjonarzy w Ekwadorze. Po więcej inform acji
i zgłoszenie proszę o kontakt z kancelarią parafialną 708-423-0321. Proszę rodziców o zachęcenie
młodzieży do wzięcia udziału w tym dniu skupienia.
