Views on Male Preschool Teacher: A Systematic Review

Abstract

This study examines the findings of four previous studies about perception of parents
towards male preschool teachers. Findings of the study indicated that parents had
negative and positive perceptions regarding to male preschool teachers. As positive
perceptions, participants declared that many young children with absentee fathers
needed men as their role models. In addition, the presence of the male teachers brings
greater sense of security. On the other hand, as negative perceptions, participants
stated their worries about the potential of child abuse and inability of male teachers to
love and care young children. The traits of patience, empathy, care and nurturing are
characteristics often associated with women and this may be the reason males are
perceived as unsuitable. Moreover, they were perceived to be unable in
communication with girls, and because male teachers can not be a mother, they were
perceived as disadvantageous in the perspective of parents. Generally, the findings
indicated that there is still a high negative sex stereotype towards male teachers in
early childhood education. Implications of these findings were further discussed and
future research directions were suggested.

 A Review of Eye-Tracking Technology Used in Science Problem
Solving

Abstract

Problem solving is one of the applied skills needed by students in the 21st century and
eye tracking is a useful technique for exploring learning processing in complex
learning context such as problem solving. This study was conducted to disclose how
eye-tracking technology has been applied to science education field, especially in the
problem solving learning by reviewing studies that have employed the eye-tracking
approach. A total of five papers were selected from Social Science Citation Index
database from 2011 to 2015. In the term of content analysis, the results showed that
eye tracking in science problem solving was studied under three subjects: earth
science, general science, and chemistry. As for the eye-tracking technique, the
researchers used it to see the students’ patterns of information processing and the
effects of the instructional strategies towards their ability to solve the science
problems. This study concludes that although the implication of the use of
eye-tracking technology in science problem solving could be considered as a
promising channel for the educational researchers to explore the connection between
problem solving skills and cognitive process, it has not proliferated yet. Therefore, the
follow-up study about this topic is needed.

Technological Frames of Reference of High School Teachers on E-Report System

Implementation (A Case in North Sumatera Province, Indonesia)

Abstract

This study aims to investigate the technological frame of reference of high school
teachers on the use of e-report system application. Furthermore, it also investigates
how they adapt the e-report system in their teaching practice. The participants
involved in this study are six high school teachers and one school staff Information
Technology (IT) operator. They are from various high schools in North Sumatera
Province, Indonesia. The qualitative approach used to collect the data was an in-depth
interview. The findings indicated that high school teachers have the different
technological frame of reference on the use of e-report system application. Some of
them showed a positive attitude towards e-report system application. However, most
of them considered that the use of e-report system application is time-consuming.
Therefore, they preferred to input the final score of the learning result without
following the procedure/guidance of the system to save time. These different
technological frames of reference will increase conflicts within institution member.
Therefore, appropriate programs/training needed to be designed to minimize the
difference in technological frames of reference among teachers.

Strategies for Nurturing Students as Global Citizens

Abstract

The emergence of globalization in the last decades has brought new development
opportunities for countries around the world, but it also lead to fierce competitions in
international market. Nurturing global citizens has become a sine qua non for
surviving the new ever-changing international market, which requests an educational
system that is adequate in preparing our children to be agents of change rather than
just passive observers of global events. Although the Taiwan government has fostered
international education at the elementary and secondary education levels, the results
are still meager. This research is thus aimed to identify the most effective and
efficient methods for nurturing students as global citizens. A self-developed
questionnaire was administered to 120 teachers in Taiwan, of which 113 were
retrieved and valid for the subsequent analyses. The research results indicated that
“teaching students to respect and appreciate different cultures” is the most important
instructional approach, followed by “inspiring students’ critical thinking on global
issues” and “integrating international and/or global information into curriculum”. The
ANOVA results indicated that teachers from different school levels vary significantly
in their opinions towards the importance of several instructional approaches. Based on
the research results, we highly recommend that schools at all levels should focus more
on international curriculum development, and also, schools from different levels
should use different pedagogies in line with their students’ characteristics if the aim is
to effectively nurture their students as global citizens.
