Study Tables Policies

The Athletic Study Table is designed to provide a structured study environment


leading to academic success for SIUE student-athletes. It is the SIUE Department of
Intercollegiate Athletics expectation that all student-athletes use this time
effectively and to act in a manner that is reflective of our Athletic Department and
your team.

Policies:
 All Student-Athletes must complete their mandatory number of study table hours each
week and assume all responsibility. Exceptions may occur in unique circumstances
designated by the academic advisor.
 If you are required to complete 6 or more hours per week you must complete half of your
required weekly study hours in Athletic Academic Study Tables.
 Approved charity time include athletic study table tutor, coach, academic advisor,
Writing Lab tutor, Math Lab tutor, SI tutor, instructor, or chemistry lab tutor.
 You must be prepared with enough work to keep you busy during your time at study
table.
 Personal computers will be allowed, but will only be used for academic purposes (no
MySpace/Facebook, Instant Messenger or personal email).
 Cell phones must be turned off during your time in study table (no text messaging).
 Tutors will be available, but may be busy with other students. Wait patiently and keep
yourself busy until it is your turn.
 You will respect all monitors/tutors, their requests, and any disciplinary decisions.
 Students will be allowed to use the library for research purposes but must notify the
monitor and return to study table to check out with proof of research.
 Disciplinary action will be taken as a result of any single or a combination of the following
infractions:
o Dismissal by Tutor or Monitor due to disruptive behavior, being ill-
prepared, or disrespecting tutor/monitor.
o Incompletion of required study hours or failure to turn in log sheet.
o Any student who falsifies their study logs will also be suspended from their
next date of competition and will face additional disciplinary action.
 The following is a list of disciplinary actions for the infractions mentioned above:
o 1st Infraction - Coach and Athletic Director will be notified and coach should
discuss/determine appropriate disciplinary action.
o 2nd Infraction - Student-athlete will be suspended from the next date of
competition. Any deviation of this policy will be determined by the Assistant
Athletic Director for Compliance/Student Services and an additional member
of the Athletic Administration staff.
o 3rd Infraction– Student-athlete will meet with the Athletic Director, Assistant
Athletic Director for Compliance/Student Services and head coach to
determine future actions which may include additional missed competition, a
reduction in athletically related aid, or indefinite suspension from team.
Study Tables Rules & Outcomes
Rule 1: All students must use a charity time sheet to receive study outside of
athletic study tables and the athletic computer lab.
Violations: Student does not have a log sheet and wants to sign in using loose leaf
Consequences:
– No time will be recorded for study hours
– Student is permitted to return to study tables with an appropriate log sheet. From this
point on, no sooner, study hours can be logged

Rule 2: No Food in study areas. No tobacco. Only drinks with lids allowed.
Violation: Student-athlete signs in and is found eating
Consequences:
– Signed out and asked to eat outside the classroom. Can sign back in after finished eating
– Incident is documented and reported to advisor, coach, and sport administrator

Rule 3: No Improper use of laptops or use of cell phones.


Violation: Student-athlete’s cell phone goes off; student-athlete is text messaging, using PDA or
laptop for non-academic purposes.
Consequences:
– One Warning, then if behavior continues…
– Signed out and removed until the next day
– Incident is documented and reported to advisor, coach, and sport administrator

Rule 4: No unacceptable behavior in athletic computer lab or study tables.


Violation Type 1: disrespect of a proctor, tutor, or staff person by using foul language,
unnecessary talking, disruptive behavior
Consequences:
– Immediately signed out and removed until the next day
– Incident is documented and reported to advisor, coach, and sport administrator
– Additional disciplinary action depending on severity of infraction
Violation Type 2: not doing academic work (sleeping, reading magazine, non-academic use of
the internet i.e. Facebook)
Consequences:
– One Warning, then if behavior continues…
– Signed out and removed until the next day
– Incident is documented and reported to advisor, coach, and sport administrator

Rule 5: No non-academic use of the athletic computer lab printer.


Violations: Student-athlete prints picture, document, or paper for non-academic purposes
Consequences:
– Signed out and removed until the next day
– Incident is documented and reported to advisor, coach, and sport administrator

Consequences of repeated violations of ANY of the above rules will result in suspension of the next date of
competition. Repeat violations could ultimately result in loss of privileges, reduction in athletically related aid or
indefinite suspension from the team for an extended period of time or permanent.
