Overview and system description OfficeCool®- LECU

BOTTOM-UP FLOW, BOTTOM RETURN

ZONE UNIT
The zone unit automatically controls the volumetric flow rate
of air to provide sufficient heating or cooling of the environ-
ment at floor level.
The zone unit can be installed in or outside of the room to be
heated or cooled; for maintenance only access from the
front is required.

UNDERFLOOR BARRIER
A silicon-impregnated, easy-to-shape material for forming
channels for air return to the zone unit. This system allows
covering offices having complex design forms.
The barriers are easy to move from place to place and modify
to meet requirements for the office layout..

Fig. 1-4: Bottom-up flow of conditioned air

The flexible DENCO-OfficeCool underfloor air conditioning system operates very

economically. When installed in new buildings, it significantly shortens the construction
time and reduces building costs.
The System Conditioned air from the zone unit (1) enters the space underneath the raised floor (2)
and then appropriately located LECUs (3). Temperature and flow rate through the
LECUs under the floor can be controled by each user.
Typically, the zone unit is set to a minimum outlet air temperature of over 12°C to
eliminate the feeling of cold. As room temperature depends on the LECU's set point
setting, the LECU’s damper opens to control heat gain or loss within air flow.
The Zone Unit continuously controls temperature under the floor according to the
zone's requirements based on time settings or temperature or humidity sensor
readings.
A strategically located return air sensor controls the adjustment of air volume by the
Zone Unit, chilled water and the two- or three-way valves, the heating water valve
(if used), electric heating elements (if used), DX cooling or heating (if used) and the
humidifier (if used).
As the average temperature of air returning to the Zone Unit differs from the set point
setting, the air flow rate increases. Simultaneously, cooling or heating is activated as
needed.
The operation of the Zone Unit can also be controlled based on the average of readings
from the sensors of the LECUs in the zone. This ensures that the system operates with
the maximum volumetric flow rate of air only during peak-load times, which do not
occur very frequently in most offices.
Air returns to the Zone Unit either through the unit's top or the inlet grilles in the
suspended ceiling.
In conditions without load when the required conditions in the room have been
reached, the unit only runs with a minimum flow rate (usually approximately 25% of the
maximum).
When the required conditions change, the maximum and minimum flow rate from the
Zone Unit can be easily adjusted.

OfficeCool®- LECU Overview and system description

Bottom return Conditioned air from the Zone Unit enters the distribution ducts between the floor
bearing structure and the raised floor. The distribution ducting for air supply and return
are separated from the floor bearing structure as well as the raised floor by insulation
and can be modified if needed.
Typically, the zone unit is set to a minimum outlet air temperature of over 12°C to
eliminate the feeling of cold.
Appropriately located LECUs control local conditions by controlling the volume of air
leaving the underfloor ducting and mixing with air in the room. As room temperature
depends on the LECU's set pointsetting, the LECU’s damper opens to control heat gain
or loss with air flow. Temperature under the floor is continuously controlled by the Zone
Unit so that the requirements set for each zone are met.
A strategically located return air sensor controls the flow rate through the Zone Unit,
the two-way chilled water valve, the heating water valve (if used), electric heating
elements (if used), DX cooling or heating (if used) and the humidifier (if used).
As the average temperature of air returning to the Zone Unit differs from the set point
setting, the air flow rate increases. Heating and cooling valve control takes place simul-
taneously. This ensures that the system operates with the maximum volumetric flow
rate of air only during peak load times, which do not occur very frequently in most
offices. In conditions without load when the required conditions in the room have been
reached, the unit only runs with a minimum flow rate.
Under these conditions the air supplied to the underfloor space is partially directed into
the room by the LECUs but primarily returns to the Zone Unit through a small duct
below the raised floor. Under normal operating load conditions the line of return air
grilles enables to take the used air from the room and back to the Zone Unit.
When the conditions required change, the maximum and minimum floor rate from the
Zone Unit can be easily adjusted.
Positioning LECUs The LECUs can be fast and easily moved anywhere along the raised floor space. They
are connected using a power supply and network cable, easy to plug into any power
supply or data system under the floor. The structural design of the raised floor provides
easy maintenance and servicing access.

General
LECUs provide air conditioning systems with a unique ability to deal with changing
requirements for spatial arrangements. The LECU is an intelligent fan unit which can
be installed anywhere within a raised floor. The LECU maintains the locally required
temperature level by mixing air from the room with conditioned air from the space
below the floor according to the settings. If necessary, the unit can be optionally
equipped with electric heating. The LECU is able to operate independently and does
not require any cable connection to the Zone Unit; however, the units connected to the
network can be run using a controller (remote access for setting operating points and
monitoring operating indicators.

3.3 Control system

General All LECU’s functions are performed by the Carel control system installed in the unit.
The LECU can be set in various ways. The easiest one is to set the required setpoint
using the infrared remote control or built-in display. The setpoint can be accessed
through a BMS (Building Management System) which makes all access points availa-
ble through the intranet. The LECU typically works as an independent unit and does
not require connection to the Zone Unit. The LECU’s set point can be accessed either
locally, from a building management system or through the intranet. The LECU is typ-
ically supplied in three versions, either as an independent unit or with network controls
in a "Master / Slave" configuration (master / slave unit).
The controls principle in the two systems is identical. This allows the remote monitoring
and setting of each set point and control parameter of the LECU.
Local environment The LECU is controlled by a microprocessor controller with all necessary control pro-

port can only be made if such damage is confirmed by the forwarder.

Note!
We recommend keeping the original packaging to provide protection and facilitate
handling in subsequent transport and storage. Only remove the original packaging
immediately before installation.
If the unit is to be stored for a prolonged period of time before installation or com-
missioning, its parts must be protected against damage due to dust and dirt!

4.2 Transportation

Damage to unit and personal injury!

In order to avoid injuries and damage use appropriate lifting equipment such as a
crane for lifting and handling.
When tying or lifting using a forklift truck or a truck hydraulic arm, the unit must be
safeguarded so as not to topple over.
The unit’s weight is specified in the order documentation and on the unit's identifi-
cation plate.

• For personal safety, wear gloves and protective boots when moving the unit.
• When suspending the unit standing on a pallet, use a spacer so that the unit does
not get squeezed

Danger due to overhead loads!

Never walk under a suspended load as there is a risk of untying or detachment
from the hoist. Failure to do so may lead to serious or fatal injuries.

• Before transporting the unit make sure that all mounting parts are anchored and
secured.
• Only use lifting devices with a sufficient load rating.
• Never use damaged lifting equipment.
• Ropes or chains must not be knotted or in contact with sharp edges.
• Only use ropes or chains of identical length.

Information on the assembly and installation of the unit is provided here. The
positioning, installation and assembly of the unit must be conducted by qualified
personnel or an authorized and professionally trained specialist experienced in this
field and familiar with occupational health and safety regulations.
Information on moving the unit from place to place!
If the DencoHappel unit has been moved from another location, it is necessary to
commission it again as described in chapter “Commissioning”.

Note!
For the detailed plan of positioning the unit follow the dimension diagram in the
unit’s documentation.

5.1 Mechanical installation of the LECU

Attention!
DencoHappel is not liable for damage caused by improper handling during the
installation of the unit.

• Be careful when lifting the unit as its weight is approximately 25 kg.

• The unit must be in a vertical position in two mutually perpendicular planes and rest
on the supports (legs) of the raised modular floor. If that is not the case, problems
might occur during operation.

5.2 Filter maintenance

• For filter maintenance use a tool to remove the filter from the frame and replace or
clean it.

5.3 General noise level assessment on site

Noise issues must be addressed before installation.
– The room’s acoustic parameters (soft panelling, drapes and curtains) may muffle
sound reflection. Bare walls and vertical surfaces tend to reflect sound, leading to
increased noise.
– Noise from a unit placed immediately by the wall will spread horizontally and verti-
cally through the structure into the adjacent areas.
– Floors with a pliable structure (such as wood) will amplify the sound generated by
the unit.
To reduce this problem the following solutions are recommended depending on the
conditions on site:
• All vertical surfaces in the immediate vicinity of the unit must be acoustically
insulated. If the unit is installed in a fitted room, the acoustic insulation of the walls
should be considered.
• Soundproof insulation panelling may be fitted behind the unit to reduce the transfer
of noise through the walls.
• Panels and cables in the direction of air flow may act as a source of vibration and
noise caused by the motion of air. These components must be firmly supported with
a rigid structure.
• If possible, there should be insulation between the raised floor and the air
conditioning unit.
• Placing the Zone Unit on the load bearing components (columns) of the building
minimizes the transfer of noise through the structure. For this purpose a steel floor
frame can be used as one of the accessories of the unit.
• It is also possible to place rubber mats underneath the unit.
• Avoid sharp bends in the duct and use only elbows and tees with large bend radii.
Where the duct runs through the walls or the unit, use an adequately sized pipe
sleeve filled with suitable insulation material. Insulate the pipes and support the
firmly with a rigid structure.

OfficeCool®- LECU Electrical connection

6 Electrical connection
Electrical connection must be conducted by qualified personnel or an authorized
and professionally trained specialist experienced in this field and familiar with
occupational health and safety regulations.
Follow safety regulations!
Safety regulations under EU directives for low-voltage systems and the regulations
and standards of the power supplied must be adhered to during the installation and
connection of the unit.
It is necessary to equalize potentials and earth all components connected.
The power supply line must be fitted with a residual-current device with
safety switch-off current 30mA.
When installing products with EC motors, use a residual-current device
sensitive to all kinds of current (type B or B+, current 300mA, delayed).

Danger of electrical current!

Disconnect the power supply and safeguard against inadvertent activation.
Safeguard the adjacent live parts by short-circuit earthing and cover them. Failure
to do so may lead to serious or fatal injuries.

Note!
The cabling must be arranged as per the attached wiring diagrams of the specific
unit. The colour coding of cables is described in the connection diagram. Only a
single power supply cable may be used.
Never connect any other units to this cable.

6.1 Connecting controllers

Static charge damage risk!
When working with the controller’s board, protective measures against a charge
must be in place. The controller manual has a chapter which addresses this issue.

6.3 LECU Control System

LECU average temperature After connecting the LECUs to the network and creating the network with the Zone Unit
control (up to 20 LECUs for each Zone Unit), the Zone Unit can be configured for control using
the LECUs according to average return air temperature in the room from all LECUs in
any zone. When a LECU is disconnected from the network, this LECU is not included
in the average calculation.
Electrical connections As standard the LECU is equipped with a 3-wire cable 1.5mm thick with an option to
select the plug.
The cable is used for connection to 240 V -50 Hz - 60 Hz power supply.

6.4 Network cable for connecting LECUs

DencoHappel LECUs can be interconnected in a pseudo network using network cables
supplied by DencoHappel. As standard each LECU is fitted with a 10m long network
cable with a plug and socket.
LECUs are mutually connected and the building management system is therefore able
to read and record variables in each LECU (the recording and reading option is deter-
mined by the type of variable).
Besides, it is possible to calculate the average from sensor readings and use as tem-
perature for control by the Zone Unit. The same network cable is used for connecting
a LECU to the Zone Unit network.
It is also possible to connect a LECU Slave to a LECU Master using special LECUs.
For this purpose it is necessary to order LECUs in the Slave or Master version.
LECUs Master are easy to identify as they have 3 network connectors while Slave units
have only 2.
When creating a Master / Slave system it is necessary to install two different networks.
All LECUs Master are installed in the same communication network as Zone Units.
All LECUs Slave must be installed in the subnet (slave net) to be connected to the
LECU Master.
Up to 5 Slave units (or total length up to 30m of communication cable) may be con-
nected to each LECU Master.
The network cables can be extended by connecting two cables together.
After installation the LECU Slave receives its operating points and temperature levels
in the room from the LECU Master.
The LECU variables (including the averages from sensors) are only available in the
LECU Master.

OfficeCool®- LECU Operation

7 Operation
Note!
Before commissioning the unit, read the operating manual and the manuals of the
controller and all other connected components in their entirety. The documents
must be read before commencing each activity.

Damage to the unit!

The unit must not be operated until the functional test has been conducted.

The process of operating the controller of the air conditioning unit is described in the
relevant controller manual. See information on operating the unit in the controller
manual.

7.1 General information on operating the unit

The OfficeCool system is designed to run continuously for 8,760 hours per year to
provide constant indoor conditions..
Notes in this chapter are only general; however, they are important for starting up,
shutting down, failure operation and failure detection based on understanding the
function of the following components::
– Zone Unit mains power supply switch
– Mains power supply and power supply protection switch of the unit
– All connectors (circuit breakers) in the switchboard casing
The control system requires constant and fully functional operating power supply. The
components of DencoHappel units must not be disconnected from the power supply.
The electrical system must remain fully operational at all times so as to ensure the
proper function of the entire system.
Remember that the electric control panels or items of the equipment must be discon-
nected. This can only be done by an electrician. Therefore check every time before
renewing power supply that the panel or item of the equipment are disconnected.

7.2 LECU control system operation

LECU On/Off LECUs can be switched on or off either using the display (optional) or through the Zone
Unit network, BMS or intranet. LECUs also have a toggle switch for manually switching
off the power supply.

Note!
When a LECU is disconnected from the power supply, network communication is
interrupted.
