ABSTRACT

The sources of occurrence of various pollutants from chemical process industries

and there harmful effects have been highlighted. Typical composition of wastewater from
various sources presented. The methods of treatment of wastewater briefly discussed. The
world’s chemical industries face formidable environmental regulatory challenges in treating
their wastewater effluents.

The present work aims at highlighting the various industrial wastewater

treatment technologies currently available including primary, secondary and tertiary
(advanced) treatment processes are discussed. . The purpose of this review is to discuss the
current wastewater treatment technologies in chemical industry. Because of the specificity
of their waste waters, the chemical industry are required either improving the existing waste
water treatment processes or developing combinations of various processes. This enables
one to emerge with feasible treatment schemes targeting treatment of high strength
wastewater. An increased understanding of the environmental requirements of
petrochemical industry is gaining importance. As the industry requires constant
improvement due to stricter regulation and environmental laws, enhancements in the current
technologies along with exploration of new technologies and their various combinations are
under research for various types of petrochemical effluents. The traditional treatment of the
wastewater effluents from the refinery and petrochemical plants are usually based on the
mechanical, physicochemical and biological methods. A typical wastewater treatment
system for petrochemical refineries may include neutralization, coagulation/flocculation,
oil-water separation process, floatation/sedimentation/filtration, clarification and
biodegradation (e.g., trickling filter, anaerobic treatment, aerated lagoon, rotating biological
contactor and activated sludge). A final polishing step using filtration, ozonation, activated
carbon, or chemical treatment may also be required.
