Homework 1.
Due date: March 1, 2018
1. Compute the transport properties (thermal conductivity and viscosity) of n-butane and ethane
at 0.20 MPa and 1.2 MPa for the following temperatures: 298K, 390K, 480K. Use
corresponding states generalized chart and Chapman-Enskog formula. Compare the result
(% deviation) with the one obtained from NIST web utility.
2. Predict the viscosity for a natural gas methane (85%) - ethane (5%) - propane (10%) at 120°F and
1.5 atm using Chapman-Enskog for calculation of pure viscosities. First, use the Chapman-
Enskog mixing rule and compare the result with the one obtained through the "easy"
mixing rule; compare both values with data from literature.
3. The equimolar counterdiffusion of a binary mixture of helium and nitrogen at 350 K and 1.3 atm
takes place in a pipe of 5 mm inner diameter and 0.1 mm length. Under those conditions
the mass transfer is exclusively diffusive. First compute the diffusivity for the pair He-N2
from an appropriated source and compare it with the one obtained from literature
sources. Find the molar and mass flow rates of Helium if its partial pressure is 0.06 atm at
one side of the pipe and 0.2 atm at the other side.
5. A countercurrent heat exchanger will be designed for cooling an ethanol - i-propanol liquid
mixture with mole fractions 0.40 - 0.60, respectively. The mixture will flow through 3/8 in
nominal diameter copper tubes. Water will be used as cooling fluid flowing in the outer
side of the tubes, and its temperature will be increased from 25°C to 52°C. Determine:
· The viscosity of the mixture at the inlet (70°C) and the outlet (30°C) heat
exchanger.
· Obtain the viscosities for the cooling fluid at the inlet and outlet temperatures.
· . If posible, calculate the heat flux for the exchanger. If it is not posible, what info
is missing?
