LAB 2: Digital Elevation Map

Importing and Overlaying Data.

1. Copy your finished Lab 1 Map (in jpeg format) into “Lab 2” folder.
2. Go to Catalog, connect the folder. The “Lab 2” should be appearing at your Catalog
tab.
3. Right click your Lab 1.jpeg, go to Properties, select edit Spatial Reference, used
the same Coordinate Reference you used in Lab 1. Click Apply, and then OK.

4. Add data of your finished Lab 1 Map. Right click at Layer, click Add Data and
import Lab 1 Map. jpeg.
5. Right click on your map, go to Data Frame Properties,

6. Select Coordinate system tab, click Transformation button, Into:...select


Geographic coordinate system > World> WGS 1984. Click Apply, and then Ok.
7. Add Data “ASTGM2_N04E100_dem.tif” data as per given in your Lab 2 folder.

Note: make sure the DEM layer is underneath the Lab 1 layer in Table of Content
tab.

8. Do your Georeferencing, on Lab 1 Map. As per Lab 1 manual.

Note: make sure you select the Lab 1 layer before creating Georeferencing.
Clipping Data

1. Create new polygon shapefile, rename as “Study Area”. Edit the Coordinate System
to Kertau 47N.....as per Lab 1.
2. Select the whole study area, follow the rectangle frame.

3. Go to Search toolbar, search for Clip, select Clip (Data Management).


4. Select dem data (ASTGM2_N04E100_dem.tif) as Input Raster. For Output
extend, select Study Area. Click Environment button, for Output Coordinate
system, choose “Same as Lab 1 layer”.
5. You can remove the dem data given (ASTGM2_N04E100_dem.tif) from Table of
Content tab.
Creating Contour Map

1. Go to Search Toolbar, search for “Contour”, and select Contour (3D Analyst).

2. Select Lab 1 clip as Input Raster. For Output Polyline Features, select Lab 2
folder, name contour_10m.
3. Set Contour interval to 10.
Note: make sure to edit the Output Coordinate in Environment setting.
4. Click Ok.
5. Right click at dem clip layer at Table of Content tab. Select Properties, go to
Symbology tab.
6. Select Classified, classify the data to 10 classes, and then click the Classify button.
Change the Break Values to interval of 10. Click Ok, and change the Colour Ramp
according to your preference. Then click Apply and Ok.

7. Go to “contour layer” at your Table of Content tab, right click, and then select
Properties. Go to Label tab, and set the parameters as shown in the picture below.
Note: untick your Lab 1.jpg layer.
8. Export your map to pdf file (DON’T FORGET TO INCLUDE THE MAP
ELEMENTS!).

SAMPLE
Creating TIN Map

1. Go to Search Toolbar, search for “create TIN”, select create TIN (3D Analyst).
2. Select Lab 2 folder as your Output TIN and name it as “TIN”.Select Coordinate
system to “Kertau 47N”..Input Feature Class, select “contour_10m” layer. Don’t
forget to edit the Output Coordinate at the Environment setting. Click Ok.
3. Export your map to pdf file (DON’T FORGET TO INCLUDE THE MAP
ELEMENTS!).

Tips: you may change the transparency of the layers to overlay them. Try to change
the TIN layer transparency at the Properties > Display tab. You will get 3D view of
elevation/ contour map.
