POSITION PAPER

Introduction
The function of education is to bring change in child behavior and personality in a more desirable
form. These are also recognized as a source of enrichment and vitalization of the school curriculum, mainly
through the cultivation of hobbies, interests, etc. these activities are no longer looked upon as extras but as
an integral part of the school program. Nowadays, schools only provide Academic Learning and forget the
essence of Co-Curricular Activities. Co-Curricular activities are a significant aspect of a student’s total
education program. They provide opportunities for students to further develop their talent and skills. But I
think our school the Technological Institute of the Philippines lacks the Co-curricular activities for each
student. Recent studies states that students that don’t participate in Extra Curricular activities are not
conscious about the things that they have to do, they will not realize all the tasks and activities that are
assigning for them. Besides this, the child will not be more prepared to the future and he or she will face
different situations with lack of responsibility and adequate attitude that everybody faces in life. In
Singapore, the policy was introduced by the Ministry of Education, which believes extra activities for school
students are a means to enhance social interaction, leadership, healthy recreation, self-discipline and self-
confidence. Co-curricular activities, as the name implies, are those, not directly related with the prescribed
curriculum and include; sports, athletics, scouting, cubing, various hobbies, excursions literary societies,
dramatics, debates etc. to bring social and physical adjustments in the child. The Primary objective of this
study is to promote and support the implementation of Co-Curricular activities like Clubs, Boys and Girls
Scout, Student Council, School theatre, Music and Dance Lessons etc.

Body
The main argument of this position paper is that Co-Curricular activities implementation to the
school will greatly help the students not just for the additional grades they will get, but will enhance social
interaction, leadership, healthy recreation, self-discipline, and self-confidence. According to (Shepard,
1996) Physical activity not only improves academic performance, but has an actual physical benefit for the
mind. Said, Regular physical activity might influence cognitive development by increasing cerebral blood
flow, altering arousal and associate neurohormonal balance, changing nutritional status, or promoting the
growth of internal neuronal connections. According to (Broh,2002) Total extracurricular activity participation
(TEAP), or participation in extracurricular activities in general, is associated with an improved grade point
average, higher educational aspirations, increased college attendance, and reduced absenteeism.
COMPARISON OF MEAN VALUE OF ACADEMIC ACHIEVEMENT BETWEEN BOYS AND GIRLS

(Singh, A. 2017)

There is significant difference between the level of participation in different co-curricular activities.
According to (Singh, A. 2017). We can conclude that students (boys and girls) have differences in their
academic achievement in various subjects and also have differences in their level of participation in co-
curricular activities. Student’s academic achievements in different subjects are positively affected by their
different level of participation in co-curricular activities; specially this trend is high in the girls in comparison
to the boy. “Co-Curricular activities may affect bad effects for the students” like concerning that the students
that are signed up with too many extracurricular-activities is that they lose the attention in the class. This is
because if the children like the activity, they may be thinking in what they will do after class instead of pay
attention to lessons while there are at school. Other cause can be that if they go to a lot of activities they
will have to do an extra effort so probably the next morning the will be exhausted to continue the pace of
the class. We can avoid this type of problem by having a good management of their time and a proper
guidance of your parents. Your parents are your number 1 supporter to this kind of activities, With the help
of your parents you can accomplish anything.

Conclusion
The position of this position paper is that we agree to the implementation of the Extracurricular
activities on every school. The Implementation of Extra Curricular activities will greatly benefit the students.
To attain this, The Department of Education will need to actively participate to encourage every school to
implement them. So “what makes this position to be more acceptable and dominant?” This will help provide
opportunities for students to further develop their talent and skills, enhance social interaction, leadership,
healthy recreation, self-discipline and self-confidence. With that I will end this with a quotation “When it
comes to Extracurricular activities many children are getting to much of a good thing” –Carl Honore
