29 On p. 25, the set of 4 garden spotlights at $16.99 (3633093) should have been listed at
$16.99 each. And on p. 14 of our Summer issue (Vol. 3 No 3), the “Sahara” bamboo flooring
(20005118) should have been listed at 3¾” wide instead of 3¼”, and on p. 17 the oasis
bedroom paint code is 071-42 instead of 071-72. Sorry for the inconveniences.

Dinner at
eight
Light, bright, contemporary and laid-back, this dining room
makeover is perfect for stylish dinner parties, family get-togethers,
as well as everyday dining. P H O T O S I M A G I N E P H O T O G R A P H Y
8 e started this makeover by installing beautiful, pre-finished hardwood beech-coloured
flooring. Then, to add architectural interest and draw attention to the colourful walls,
3 we applied our own unique wainscotting—a style that’s easy to achieve because
you use just simple mouldings and panels.
The applied panel mouldings not only add character to the room, they also make the space
feel much more intimate. First, we partitioned the walls by installing a chair rail at a height of 36”,
then installed vertical boards at regular intervals, creating frames. Finally, in the middle of each
frame, we applied MDF squares to further accentuate the rectangular wall panels. Before installing
the panelling we painted the upper wall a gorgeous shade of green, the lower wall a rich grey
(RONA paint Viride 218-53), and the panelling was pre-painted in white. Touching up any painted
surface after the construction project was a breeze.
9 We put up a faux wood venetian blind on the window and white “Cité” drapery panels with metal
grommets that draw due attention to a handsome pewter-finished curtain rod.
We selected an area rug that reflects the colours in the room, as well as echoes the rectangular
shapes on the walls and furniture design. Upon the rug, we centred a dark beech coloured refectory
dining table, and placed a matching buffet along the side wall. Simple furniture are practical choices
for busy people and they are remarkably easy to keep clean and tidy.
We selected classic upholstered dining chairs and added white chair covers—purchased separately,
making them easy to change as the mood or season takes you. The white chair covers provide fresh
contrast and lend the dining room an air of sophistication.
For just the right ambient lighting, we centred two contemporary white plastic hanging lamps
above the table. We completed the look with a “jelly bean” mirror, an assortment of art canvases featuring
flower images, a set of three “Ainsley” picture frames and a stunning silver and glass vase.

he size and proportions of this room make it the ideal space

to make a design statement by using a wallpaper with a
9 dramatic pattern. We chose a gorgeous metallic “Silk Damask”
wallpaper in muted bluish-grey tones to prevent the scheme from
becoming too overpowering. The elegant wallcovering is the perfect
complement to the new Savana-coloured, beech hardwood flooring.
We took advantage of the existing window nook and built in a
3 window bench. It not only looks great and provides the perfect place
to curl up in on a sunny afternoon, but you can remove the cushions
and lift the lid to reveal a practical storage space—Ideal for storing
bulky throws or seasonal linens. For the window in the nook, we created
a unique window-shade sewing a simple taupe-coloured curtain panel
with a raised design. (Go to ronabydesign.rona.ca/diningroom to
discover how easy it is to create this custom window covering for your
own home.) We hung a white, faux wood venetian blind on the smaller
window to provide lots of light, yet plenty of privacy.
We kept the furniture to a minimum, using a simple dining table and
side buffet with crisp, clean lines and rich brown tones that echo the
new flooring. Soft ambient lighting from a “Glam Scala” 3-light pendant
crystal and fabric chandelier ensures the mood is just right for dining.
An eclectic collection of ceiling medallions were painted and hung over
the buffet to create pops of pastel on the wall. An area rug anchors the
room and several chairs, slip-covered in pale almond, complete the room.

To create this charming space, we stuck with a simple
colour palette, a few good pieces and added interest with texture.
As a backdrop to the fireplace, we created a sort of textual
tapestry by installing decorative “Ledgestone” wall ceramics.
These fabulously versatile tiles are very easy to work with, add

depth to a room and create an urban, loft-like feel. Then, we
installed an electric chimney fireplace insert that’s very realistic
looking and throws off enough heat to warm a 400 square-foot
room. Perfect for cozying up to all winter long, it also provides
ambiance to dinner parties.
To ground the space, we installed pre-varnished birch flooring
with a satin finish to augment the richness and textures of
the room. The satin finish reflects the warm glow of the fire
as well as light from the windows. On one window we installed
an espresso-coloured, horizontal faux wood blind, while on
the larger window, we added drama with crimson-coloured
“Paula” drapery panels that are as attractive as they are

practical—they’re completely reversible. The drapes are hung
on a handsome resin and metal “Plaza” curtain rod. 13
A simple wooden table and a “Sillon” area rug are highlighted
by an ultra-modern “Tamari” 3-light ceiling pendant.

countertop, an avant-garde faucet: this kitchen has it all, including a
chic light bulb chandelier. And it’s oh-so-easy to do it yourself!
The kitchen plan began with a hardworking layout that facilitates food
prep, cooking and clean-up, and segregates the work area from the rest
of the room, while still providing an opportunity for the cook to be part
of the action and social gatherings. To set the stage, we laid a black faux-
bamboo ceramic tile floor, and painted one wall lime green and another
grey (RONA paints Lime celebraton 159-44 and Executive grey 217-53). In
order to maximize the kitchen’s work area, dark wood base cabinets with
clean, simple lines, and a stunning custom HanStone quartz countertop
were installed to house the cooktop and sink. White thermoplastic cabinets
frame the refrigerator and ovens on the lime green wall opposite.

TIP WHEN PLANNING A RENOVATION,

KEEP IN MIND THAT THE KITCHEN IS FOR
FAMILY AND SHOULD BE DESIGNED TO
BE COMMUNAL. THE CHEF SHOULDN’T
BE EXCLUDED FROM BEING SOCIAL.
The kitchen cabinet setup is instantly familiar, and includes a built-in
dishwasher and a corner display cabinet with a glass door to show off
your favourite collectibles. The cabinets themselves are a mix of elegant,
classical mouldings and clean lines, with brushed metal handles. As
an added bonus, a small office area, with a desk and storage, was created
in one corner.
The countertop is made from Staron®, a 100% acrylic solid surface
that is attractive, functional, practical and easy to maintain. It includes an
integrated double sink that nicely eliminates the need for an unsightly
seal around the basins. The tap set is a stainless-finished brass unit with a
pull-out, extendable spout and an integrated soap dispenser.
An adjacent in-counter steel waste basket sits ready to do duty either
as garbage receptacle or compost bin. It is also easily removed and

TRADITIONAL
AND ELEGANT
The kitchen is the heart of our home and our
favourite spot to socialize. This oasis style
room is a great place in which to spend time,
relax over coffee, check e-mail or enjoy casual
entertaining—and to cook of course!

T his kitchen’s cream tones, pale cabinets, and open,

uncluttered space turn light into a veritable decor
element that bounces around and fills the room giving it
welcoming energy and warmth. And this feeling of open and
airy is further enhanced by the fact that most of the materials and
furnishings are a variant of cream or off-white, starting with the
beige floor, which is made of an opulent textured ceramic tile.
In an ideal kitchen, room size is not as important as the efficient
use of space, and this design incorporates the perfect triangular work
area recommended by kitchen planning experts. It has a range and
fridge on one wall and sink under the window on the adjacent one.

napkins. Two tall stools are good for a relaxing evening tea or a morning
spent with the paper.
For lighting, there are pot lights in the glass-fronted cabinets and
the ceiling, while a metal and glass pendant light and the lights in the
range hood both cast local light over the table and stovetop.

eating is defined by a change in materials, colour of wood
and surface height. The wooden counter is well-suited to
the stools underneath, and is the perfect height for a casual nosh.
Above, a small DIY wall-mounted shelf matches the wood of the
dining counter below. This little unit is perfect for glasses, cookbooks
or kitchen collectibles.
The lighter wood tones of the eating area are echoed in the
opposite corners by simple, easy-to-install shelves, perfect for
additional storage or some plants in terra-cotta pots.
This kitchen gets ample daylight through its three windows, but
the lighting scheme is easily transplanted into any kitchen. Ceiling
pot lights cast a good overall glow, while pendants light up specific
spots. A single hemp-rope shade over the butcher’s block adds to
the another-worldly feel, while a couple of attractive glass-shaded
pendants jazz up the eating area. The eye-level window above the
sink boasts a dark, horizontal wood blind that lets in light during the
day, then closes up for privacy at night.

an easier time in the kitchen. Here, we take things one step further by
adding a centre island that is topped with a maple butcher’s block. Not
only does it provide lots of additional workspace, but it increases the
effectiveness of the work area, because it’s just a quick turn away from
any part of the counter. Also, this stand-alone island is on large, rollable
casters, so it’s easy to move about and reposition any where you need it.
That’s a lot of flexible work surface and because the butcher’s block top
looks so good, it can double as a buffet surface.
The large, custom laminated Formica® countertop is attactive, relatively
stain-resistant and easy to clean. The modern, curvy double sink is
extremely scratch, heat and stain resistant, while the modern-looking
tone-handled tap is easy to use one-handed.
The placement and design of the cabinets make good use
of available space and offers tons of storage without cluttering up the
room. Instead of installing typical wall-to-wall upper cabinets, we
placed just two small glass-fronted cupboards above the counter in one
corner for dishes.
Everything else goes into undercounter cupboards (including a wine
fridge), except for a larger unit on the opposite wall, which also houses the

DOING IT RIGHT
BRILLIANT BISCUITS It’s a good idea to opt for
biscuits when building this shelf, because
you won’t end up with nail or screw heads
showing along the edges. So, once it’s
completed, the shelf will look almost
seamless. But building with biscuits requires
meticulous care during all stages, from
