Hidden Curriculum

teaching and the organization of schools.
This is different from the manifest or
formal curriculum that is subject-based or
topic-based.

Hidden Curriculum

▶ Hidden curriculum refers to the unwritten, unofficial,


and often unintended lessons, values, and
 
perspectives that students learn in school. ….

implicit academic, social, and cultural messages
that are communicated to students while they are in
school.

The Manifestation of Hidden Curriculum

▶ Rituals: celebrations and ceremonies, rites of passage, and


shared quirks and mannerisms.
 
▶ Hero Making: role models, hierarchies, public rewards, and
mentors.
▶ Storytelling: shared humor, common anecdotes, foundation
myths, and both oral and written history.
▶ Symbolic Display: decoration, artwork, trophies, and
architecture.
▶ Rules: etiquette, formal rules, taboos, and tacit permissions
