“It’s exciting to see the range of projects that were suc-
cessful in their applications for the Trust funding through
the CKCA. It’s also impressive to see the scope of the
projects; there are artists taking their first steps towards
becoming professionals, to individuals receiving funding
for major projects and everything in between. The mem-
bers of the CKCA Steering Committee are very pleased
to continue our relationship with Columbia Basin Trust,
fostering excellence in the arts and culture community
across the region,” said Laura White, Columbia Kootenay
Cultural Alliance Chair.
Funding applications were adjudicated in May by the
CKCA Steering Committee, with input from commu-
nity arts councils. Support will go toward a wide range of
projects, including individual and group projects, mas-
ter classes, touring and major exhibition projects. “Resi-
dents have told us that a strong arts and culture sector
is an important part of life in the Basin,” said Michelle
d’Entremont, Manager, Grants and Programs, Colum-
bia Basin Trust. “Supporting these projects means art-
ists and organizations get the help they need to further
their work and residents benefit from a culturally vibrant
region.”
CKCA funding helps individuals and organizations
realize arts and cultural projects across all arts disci-
plines, including visual art, theatre, music, dance, media,

Basin businesses get support to grow
Businesses poised for significant growth can now get
assistance to realize their vision through a new accelera-
tor program being offered through Columbia Basin Trust
and developed by Accelerate Okanagan.
The Trust is delivering the RevUp business growth
accelerator program to support non-technology based
businesses in the Basin that have active customers,
increasing revenues and current plans for significant
expansion. The goal is to help them address their indi-
vidual business challenges to meet or exceed their growth
objectives. Eight to ten companies will be selected to par-
ticipate in the first round of the program.
“Economic prosperity in the Basin comes down to
our individual businesses – their success contributes the
region’s success,” said Johnny Strilaeff, Columbia Basin
Trust President and Chief Executive Officer. “This pro-
gram offers senior leadership teams concrete tools and

have created and employ over 450 people in the Okana-

has been piloted and continually revised to achieve results

Dementia Education workshops
The seasons are changing and this may be a good time
to think about attending some of our dementia educa-
tion workshops if you are caring for someone living with

Understanding Communication: Caregivers will gain
an understanding of how communication is affected by
Alzheimer’s disease and other dementias. They will also
have the opportunity to explore effective ways of facilitat-

Understanding Behaviour: Changes in the brain due to
Alzheimer’s disease or another form of dementia often
appear to us as changes in the person’s behaviour. Care-
givers will learn how to understand behaviour as a form
of communication and explore strategies for determin-
ing what the person with dementia might be trying to
communicate.
Both workshops are available in Castlegar, Grand Forks,
Nelson and Trail. All sessions are free to attend, donations

RCAC Announces biggest
Performance Series ever
The Rossland Council for Arts and Culture is celebrat-
ing its 20th Anniversary with their largest Performance
Series yet! This marks the fourteenth year of the Perfor-
mance Series, the goal of which is to bring high quality
arts performances to Rossland.
To help celebrate their 20th Anniversary the RCAC
has put together a compilation of performances ranging
from unique theatre performances of shadow puppetry
and musical theatre to live music by local and provincial
artists to stand-up comedy. The RCAC invites you to cel-

Performing Arts Trail presents...
Audiences can enjoy the colourful tones of ‘A Glezele
Vayn’, the Kootenay based trio featuring Martine denBok,
Nicola Everton and Sue Gould, in an intimate program of
chamber music, highlighting the rich repertoire for vio-
lin/viola, clarinet and piano.
Enjoying a unique versatility and passion for different
musical genres, the trio is able to perform an extremely
varied program that includes works for both violin and
its larger cousin the viola, such as the playful French trio
by Milhaud and the classic Kegelstatt Trio by Mozart as
well as the folksy klezmer trio ‘Moldovanke’. Highlight-
ing their passion for Klezmer folk style music, the second
half of the program expands to form the Klezmeridian
Ensemble with clarinet, violin, percussion, guitar, accor-
dion and bass for a lively finale.

Pius Bueler
With great sadness we announce that a beautiful
man has left us.  Pius passed on Saturday, September
1931 –2018 15, 2018 in the Nelson Hospital.
He will be dearly missed by lots of family and
friends. He is survived by his wife, Jackie. He leaves
behind his daughter Debbie (Bob) Anderton;
his sons Stephen (Mel) Bueler, and Brian (April)
Bueler; grandchildren, Ryan (Kelsey), Nicki (Bob),
Sherri (Brian), Shauna (Colin), Simone, Kevin,
Amanda (Nick), Jessie (Brei); great-grandchildren,
Makayla, Dylan, Keira, Brooklyn, Alexandrea,
Austin; and his beloved cat Bullet. He also leaves
behind his sisters, Elizabeth & Josie of Switzerland,
and numerous nieces and nephews. He was
predeceased by his father Pius Bueler-Hegner and
mother Josefina Bueler-Hegner and his brothers,
Joseph, Emil, and Walter.
Pius was born in Galgenen, Switzerland on
August 22, 1931. Pius traveled by boat to Canada
in March, 1952, not knowing how to speak a word
of English. He travelled west, until he found the
Kootenays, where he fell in love with the beauty,
which reminded him of his homeland.  Pius worked
as a cook with Kootenay Forest Products until 1981
at which time he semi-retired.  He loved gardening
and was very good at it. Pius started growing
radishes and green onions, which he sold to Quality
Produce in Nelson. He also chopped kindling,
putting it into bundles and marketing them to
many resorts in and around Banff and Lake Louise.
Many of you may remember his famous meat pies.
They were so good – he could not keep up with the
orders and had to make the decision to just make
them for the family.  He also enjoyed his time with
friends, having coffee at Drifters and sharing the
news of the valley. He loved the Kootenays!!  
We would like to say thank you to the ambulance
attendants, doctors & nursing staff in Kaslo and
Nelson, Sara at Thompson Funeral Services, and
our many friends for all your support and kindness
during this difficult time.
Please join us for a Celebration of Life to be held
at the Lardeau Valley Community Hall, Hwy 31,
Meadow Creek, BC on Saturday, October 6th, 2018
from 11:00 am to 2:00 pm.

 JVH Students run for a cure
In the spirit of Terry Fox, JV Humphries students Fyfe
Wiltse and Brianna Steinmann have organized a fundrais-
ing event specifically for osteosarcoma. This is the type
of bone cancer Terry Fox was diagnosed with at the age
of 18. Osteosarcoma is the oldest known cancer and the
treatment available today does not cure all types.
In 2016, Fyfe’s sister, Rowan Wiltse was diagnosed with the
same bone cancer that Terry Fox had. In May of that same
year she had her right leg amputated. Sadly, Rowan died in
2017 because there was no effective treatment for her.
Osteosarcoma is most common in teenagers and the
aggressive subtypes have a low survival rate which is one
reason JVH students Fyfe and Brianna find it very impor-
tant to bring awareness to it. Rowan was a young, healthy,
athletic person just like Terry Fox and it is not understood
why she (or anyone else) got this cancer. Terry and Rowan
are role models for so many as they influenced those who
knew them or heard about them through their positive
outlook and determination.

AUGUST 10, 1982 – AUGUST 17, 2018
There are different subtypes of osteosarcoma which are
very hard to treat. They are considered high grade and
aggressive and it is children who often develop the high
grade types.
The intention is to not take away from the Terry Fox orga-
nization, they have been raising money for cancer for over
30 years. The JVH students goal is to bring awareness to
the lesser known and lesser funded cancer, as only 5% of all
Canadian cancer research funding goes to childhood cancers.
On Thursday, October 4 at 2 pm the students will be
hosting a fundraiser run at JV Humphries school in Kaslo.
The run is open to all students and the whole community.
Donation boxes will be located at the school office and at
the start of the run with all donations to go to the Make
It Better Agents. This organization directly funds osteo-
sarcoma research and supports the children fighting this
disease.
Fyfe and Brianna invite friends and their families to
participate in raising money for osteosarcoma at this run.
For Terry, Rowan and everyone affected by cancer you can
do your part to help find a cure.
