ABSTRACT

The study aims to differentiate heat transmission through clear and painted glass windows. A comparative
analysis between the data gathering during experimentation. This will show the different effects of the
two inside the building and how it affects the thermal comfort of the occupants. One significant
conclusion is that the good effect of the material inside the building can also brought its downside.

Keywords: heat transmission, clear glass, painted glass, thermal comfort

INTRODUCTION

The thermal energy that is related to the temperature of matter is what we called heat transmission. Heat
flows from warmer material to cooler material. It has three ways, the direct thermal transfer through
atomic excitation which is the Conduction. Convection, which is the thermal energy carried by moving
particles. And is the photon that carried energy and collides with other material is the Radiation. During
the process of heat flow within the building, the mode of heat transfer often changes. For example, the
sun transmit heat by radiation to the earth where it can be absorbed, for example by a brick wall. The heat
is then transferred by conduction through the brick and transferred to the indoor air by convection and to
the indoor surfaces by radiation.

Heat is needed to be considering in designing and building construction because it is one of the factors
that affect human thermal comfort in and out of the building. Nowadays, a lot of discovered process were
in to lessen the heat coming inside the building interior. And one of these are the painted windows.
Buildings was possible to have light because of windows and it is the key feature of any good design.

Light is important to all aspects of life. If we do not bring in the sun’s natural light, we will have to
provide artificial light by some other means necessarily requiring energy. It only makes sense to use the
sun whenever possible. In addition to light, windows allow the sun's energy to heat the interior of a
building. This is an obvious benefit in cold weather, but not so desirable in warm weather. Moreover,
while windows provide wonderful light and heat in the daytime they provide little benefit (in the way of
light and heat, anyway) at night. Moreover, windows do not insulate nearly as well as other wall
materials. Thus, windows have negative aspects as well. The challenge, therefore, is to find ways to reap
the benefits of windows while minimizing their downsides.

The objective of this research is to differentiate the advantages and disadvantages of painted glass and
clear glass window. Since windows place a major role in the building, it is important to provide the best
quality it should have to provide thermal comfort.
Research Question:

How do clear and painted glass window differ in heat transmission?

METHODOOGY

This research aims to know the difference of clear glass and painted glass window in heat transmission as well as
their advantages and disadvantages. Through a model building with clear glass and the painted glass window, the
data were gathered. During a sunny day, the windows of the building directly facing the sun. The data varies every
1hour starting 7 am in the morning up until 4 pm in the afternoon. With the use of two different devices, the
temperature inside were checked.

RESULTS and DISCUSSION

Both of the two materials used in the window has its own effect inside the building. The table 1 is the result using
the normal thermometer. Followed by the presentation of its graph. The second table and graph is the result using
thermometer app in the cellphone.

CONCLUSION

Painted glass window lessen the temperature inside the building as the paint block the
sunlight to enter the building interior compare with the clear glass. Clear glass directly enter since there is
no material that hindered it. The good thing about it is that there is a way to save energy because of the
natural light it brought. However, it’s bad because of the heat that enter inside that can make occupants
uncomfortable. Same thing, painted glass is good in a way that it blocks the heat to enter that is why it
lessen the temperature. The bad thing is that it also blocks the natural light from the sun to enter the
building so you need to have artificial light. And this will cause to more energy used.
