DOUBLE INDICATOR: Problem Set

1. A sample of caustic soda weighing 1.675g was found to contain 97.25% of total alkali calculated as NaOH, of which
2.48% was Na2CO3. What volume of 1.15N acid would have been consumed in Phenolphthalein and Methyl Orange
titration as ordinarily performed.

2. An alkaline sample of sodium compounds weighing 1.196g was dissolved in water, cooled at 15°C, treated with 2
drops of Phenolphthalein indicator and titrated with 1.058N H 2SO4 requiring 6.8 mL to render the solution colorless.
Upon adding 2 drops of Methyl Orange and continuing the titration 16.5 mL more of the acid were needed to
complete the analysis. What is the quantitative composition of the sample?
MW: NaOH = 40 Na2CO3 = 106 NaHCO3 = 84.01

3. A sample weighing 1.675g is suspected to be either KOH, K 2CO3, KHCO3 or a mixture of these substances. Its aqueous
solution was cooled to 10°C and was titrated with 1.058M HCl requiring 17.7 mL to render a solution colorless in
Phenolphthalein indicator. Upon adding 2 drops of Methyl Orange, the solution consumed further 6 mL of the acid to
complete the neutralization. Quantitatively interpret the composition of the sample.
MW: KOH = 56.11 KHCO3 = 100.1 K2CO3 = 138.2
PRECIPITATION METHOD:

1. What volume of 0.05015N KSCN solution would be required to titrate excess from 50 mL of 0.100N AgNO 3 that was
added to a solution of 0.2215g NH4Cl which is 99.5% pure? MW: NH4Cl = 53.49

2. The chloride in a 0.2720g sample was precipitated by introducing 50 mL OF 0.1030M AgNO 3. Titration of the silver
ion present in excess required 8.65 mL OF 0.1260M KSCN. Express the result of the analysis in terms of MgCl 2.
MW: MgCl2 = 95.2

COMPLEX FORMATION TITRATION:

1. A 50 mL water sample was determined for hardness in terms of CaCO 3. It required 40 mL of 0.100M EDTA for
titration. Calculate the total hardmess in ppm CaCO 3.

2. A 200 mg CaCO3 was made into a solution of 500mL, 50 mL of which was titrated with25 mL of EDTA. What is the
molarity of EDTA?

3. A 50 mL sample was titrated with 40mL of disodium EDTA (NOTE: 42.5mL EDTA solution was needed to titrate
0.08275g MgO). Another 50mL portion of the water sample was treated with K 2C2O4 and the resulting mixture
consumed 10mL EDTA. Find the hardness of water in ppm due to CaCO 3. MW: MgO = 40.32 CaCO3 = 100.1
