Time Motivation and Introduction:
 The WALT for this lesson is: understand how Jesus helped Whiteboard markers
people change. Have this clearly written on the top of the
10am
board for students to refer to throughout the lesson.

 Begin by reminding the class about our lesson on Jesus

washing his Apostles feet. Prompt students’ memory by
explaining that this was one action Jesus did to help inspire
change among his disciples.

 Ask students to think about how Jesus helped his disciples

change in this way. They will think, pair, share with their
partner and then as a class we will share answers.
Possible answers may include:
o They changed their thoughts about how to treat others
o They became more accepting of other people
o They realised their own power to help others
o They recognised that it does not matter who you are, you
should always help others

 This is just one way that Jesus inspired and helped people to
change. In today’s lesson we will be focusing on how we can
be like Jesus and help people to change.

 Students may wonder how they could possibly help inspire

change when they are ‘just year 3 students’.

Discuss with them the impact a simple action such as a smile

can have on others and in turn create a whirlwind effect!

10:05am Lesson Steps (Lesson content, structure, strategies & Key

Questions):

 Read the book “The Smile That Went Around the World” by
Patrice Karst. Explain that this book shows us just how much
impact we can have beginning with a simple smile. The Smile That Went Around
the World picture book.
 After reading the book, have students move out into a large
circle for our class discussion. A series of wonder questions
10:10am will be asked for students to contribute what they think/feel to
the class. Each student will add something and if they cannot
think of an answer that’s okay, they can either think of their
own different wonder question or I will provide a new one for
them to ponder):
The class “wonder stick” will

discussion
It can make a person feel like they are welcomed/loved
It can inspire someone to be kind to others
You can change someone’s mood
Most importantly like in the book, it can inspire each and
every person to smile!
2. I wonder what some other small actions are (like a smile)
that can create big change …
Hugs and kisses
Random acts of kindness
Helping someone with jobs
Being there for a friend

3. I wonder what there would be more of in the world if

everyone wanted to help people change like Jesus …
Happiness
Thoughtfulness
Mindfulness
Courage
Helpfulness
Gratitude
Forgiveness

 Based on our discussions, students will be sent off in small

groups to create a short role play of a situation they might be
10:15am in where they can follow Jesus’ footsteps and inspire change.
1 x iPad per group
Students will be put into mixed groups so that everyone can
help one another with their ideas. Tap students on the head
to create random groups of 4-5 students.

Some students may show the effect that a single smile can
have on many people, others may re-enact a story they have
already heard, and some may create their own story. Allow
creativity and remind students that when we work in small
groups we make sure all ideas are included and that we are
empathetic to each individual.

 Once students are happy with their role play, they will use
their iPads to film their short scenario. Assist them if they
need however they have experience filming themselves from
previous lessons. We will watch each video before the end of
the day and reflect on our own actions translating in the
video.

Lesson Closure:(Review lesson objectives with students)

 In the last five minutes of the lesson, students will write in

their journals based on the following questions:
o What is one way I might help someone change for the
10:30am
better?
o How do I feel inspired by Jesus’ actions? Religion Journals
o Is there something I could change to help me grow and
become more like Jesus?
o As a year 3 student, what is the best way I can help
inspire change?

 In our RE lessons, we will keep tasks such as journal writing

open ended so that students can express their feelings and
thoughts in the way that benefits them most. They may like to
answer each question individually, as a single passage
response or in a more creative/visual way as a brainstorm.
They can incorporate drawings and colours to greater Coloured pencils/pens
express their ideas if it helps.

Transition: (What needs to happen prior to the next lesson?)

 Before sending students out for recess, ask them to ponder
ways that they might help inspire change in others around
10:35am
them. We know that change can take place even on a scale
as small as in the playground.

Assessment: (Were the lesson objectives met? How will they be

assessed?)

Use the following checklist to decipher whether each objective was

met. The first objective will be judged by each student’s participation
in our circle discussion activity. The second objective will be checked
off based on the student’s videos that will be uploaded to SeeSaw. Checklist and videos uploaded
to SeeSaw as work sample
