Answer all questions in this section.
1 The table below shows the duration in minutes of 160 telephone calls made in one month by a trading
company.

(a) Calculate the mean call duration by the trading company. [2 marks]

(b) Construct a cumulative frequency table for the distribution, and plot a cumulative frequency curve.

(c) Use your cumulative frequency curve to estimate the median and interquartile range. [5 marks]

(d) Describe the skewness of the distribution. [2 marks]

(e) From the ogive, estimate the number of telephone calls which have a duration of less than 7 minutes.

2 Find the median and the semi-interquartile range for the following numbers; 550, 450, 400, 750, 650,

700, 850, 500. [4 marks]

3 The following table shows the number of digital camera sold in a departmental store for the year
2007 and 2008.

(c) Draw a boxplot to represent the data and identify possible outliers. [5 marks]

(d) Comment on the shape of the distribution. [1 mark]

(e) State a measure that best describes the central tendency and a measure that best describes the
dispersion of the data. Give a reason for your answer. [2 marks]
