OBJECTIVE :

To determine the effect of temperature on the conversion in a tubular flow reactor (TFR).

ABSTRACT :
The tubular flow reactor (TFR) sometimes called plug flow reactor (PFR) is commonly used in industry. It consists
of a cylindrical pipe and is normally operated at steady state. This experiment is to determine the effect of
temperature on the conversion in a TFR. Firstly, we need to switch on both pumps P1 and P2. Adjust V4 and V8 to
obtain flow approximately 0.3 L/min at both flow meters Fl-01 and Fl-02. Make sure both flow rates are the same.
Switch on the heater and set the temperature set point on TIC-01 to the desired temperature (40 oC). And then,
collect the data on the different temperature 45 oC, 50oC and 55oC.

Introduction: A tubular reactor is a vessel through which flow is continuous, usually at steady state, and
configured so that conversion of the chemicals and other dependent variables are
functions of position within the reactor rather than of time. In the ideal tubular reactor, the
fluids flow as if they were solid plugs or pistons, and reaction time is the same for all
flowing material at any given tube cross section. Tubular reactors resemble batch reactors
in providing initially high driving forces, which diminish as the reactions progress down the
tubes. Tubular reactor are often used when continuous operation is required but without
back-mixing of products and reactants.

Calculation for conversion, based on outlet conductivity:

At 313 K : At 318 K :

X = 85.42% X = 93.75%

At 323 K : At 328 K :

Conductivity= 3.9, 3.2<3.9

Thus conversion is 100% Thus conversion is 100%

Discussion:
According to the experiment that had been conducted, we need to achieve the
main objective which is to find out the effect of temperature on a conversion in a tubular
flow reactor. From the data collected, two graph had been plotted which are calibration
curve of conductivity versus conversion and calibration curve of conductivity versus
concentration. So from the graph above we can plotted new graph that shows the whole
result which the title of the graph is conversion versus reaction temperature.

Conclusion:
Based on the objective of this experiment which is want to determine the effect of
temperature on the conversion in a tubular flow reactor, we obtain the hypothesis, if the
temperature is increasing, the conversion of NaOH will also increase. So we conclude that,
from the calculation above we can assume that the temperature of reaction effect is
directly proportional to the conversion of NaOH in a Tubular Flow Reactor (TFR).
