Vision

The Academic Scholars Alliance of Adamson University (ASA-AdU) is a community of learned

individuals that recognizes, develops, promotes and maximizes the full human potential of its
members and fellow students in the University.

Mission

We believe our responsibility is to our members, to Adamson Community, and to which the
Alliance holds prerogatives. In meeting their needs, everything we do must be of total quality. We
focus our competencies to serve them promptly with high level of consistency.
We are led by a set of competent officers whose actions are fair and ethical. We aspire for our
maximum growth through viable activities conductive to learning.
We are actively involved in the upliftment of the communities in which we live, as we model hard
work, discipline, academic excellence and integrity. We value the University's mission in
escalating the Vincentian Spirit to become a catalyst for social transformation.
We maintain in good order the nature we are privileged to use, protecting the environment and
promoting cleanliness and orderliness.
We have a work environment that recognizes dynamism, aggressiveness and innovation. As we
care for each other, we strive together as an empowered team-oriented workforce to make a
meaningful contribution and to achieve our highest potential. Ours is a venue where we are given
the opportunities to be the best that we can be; fun and enthusiasm give pleasure to our duties
and heart to our service.
As we go about our everyday tasks, we are conscious that we are not just working for a cause but
we are building a legacy for our families, our University, and ourselves.

II. Narrative Report
Project S.M.I.L.ES: Scholars Movement in Inspiring LivES is an annual
tradition of Academic Scholars’ Alliance of Adamson University (ASA-AdU) to conduct
its outreach activity at Virlanie Foundation, Makati City. This event was actually one of
the most risk-taking event we had. We put all our passion, will, and love for the
organization as well as to the children for us to be able to conduct and succeed in this
event. All the executive officers of ASA AdU were in the 5th Philippine Scholars’
Summit for 3 days (December 1,2,3) at University of Santo Tomas as part of the
organizers and facilitators. It was an overnight event. Thus, we were all tired and
lacked of sleep. The summit ended on the exact date of the outreach activity which is
December 3. We didn’t finish the summit to be able to prepare for Virlanie and to be
there at exactly 1:00 PM. We couldn’t have done it without cooperation and passion
of one another. We were all exhausted from the summit but despite this condition, we
still managed to give our best to this activity. The project head lose her voice and got
sick along the way because of over fatigue from the summit, but they didn’t consider
it as a hindrance from proceeding with the outreach activity.
Our project head, Joyceline Jaro, together with all the officers of ASA-AdU
have decided to reschedule it from its original proposed date, October to December 3
which is very timely with the activity’s advocacy which is to give back and share. Since
December is the season of giving, we decided to conduct a Christmas party for the
children of Virlanie. We conducted our activity at the two of the homes in Virlanie. We
have prepared two program flows and gifts for both homes because there are only
limited activities allowed to the special children. And I believe that whatever we do or
give to them, it has to be as special and full of love as them. The first one is Aime
home. This is the home where the special children live. There are only 22 children in
Aime home. At first, some of them were very hesitant while some were friendly as
well as jolly. They all wanted to dance and kept asking for music so that they could
dance. We gave them gifts which contains the materials they needed for the first
activity. They had a coloring activity. We were amazed and impressed that most of
them knows how to write and can distinguish colors. They are all special in their own
ways. Each of them possesses a very unique characteristic that made them memorable
to the volunteers. One of them loves to ask how you are and that made the volunteers
think of a hugot --- “buti pa siya palagi akong kinakamusta”. Some of them open up
about their experiences. Each story touches and leaves a mark to every heart of the
scholars. The stories of the special children (even without a clear explanation or
without any assurance of the truth) had a huge impact on how we see and understand
life. It gave us a great realization in life that it is always better to give than to receive,
that sometimes, even the smallest voice needs to be heard. It also taught us that
smallest voice can give you a bigger and deeper understanding in life.
One of the music we played was One Call Away by Charlie Puth and I think
that it was their favourite song. They all sang along with the song while swaying and
dancing specially in the chorus part. Since then, the song gave us so many memories
with the children of Virlanie that we can look back to whenever we hear it. They were
all very fond of dancing. We also gave them puzzles which are according to one of the
house parents, puzzle is one of the therapeutic activities that they use to help them.
After all the activities, we distributed all the food and we can see how happy they were
with what we have prepared for them.
We stayed in Aime home for only 2 hours because we have to transfer to
another home in Virlanie which is Marco Polo Care Center wherein 4-6 years old
children live. We have brought minion loot bags that contains school supplies, gifts,
games, prizes, and a lot more. At first, there were only 7 children present that day
because they were sent somewhere to represent the MPCC children but before our
program ends, the children were able to come back and join our party. We played
games such as musical bumps, paper dance, and group yourselves. They also
introduced their selves along with their buddies in a creative way (scholar volunteer).
After that, we distribute the food from Jollibee. We can see the joy in their faces as
they dig into the food. their buddies assisted them while eating. One of the officers
projected a movie “Secret life of pets” while they were eating so that they will be
entertained and finish their food. The last activity we had was gift giving which
includes gifts with bags that contain school supplies. Also, this gift-giving event was a
coincidence to one of the children in Marco Polo Care Center as she celebrates her
birthday on the same day. We have also donated boxes of milk, canned goods, diapers,
stuffed toys, and medical kits to both homes.

This event is the fruit of our hardship, passion, and love for people as well as
organization. This made us believe that nothing is impossible if there is cooperation
and good communication within the organization. It made us even closer with each
other. Even though officers were not complete at that time and only limited number
of scholar volunteers were permitted by the Virlanie Foundation to go to their place,
it did not serve as a hindrance for us to carry out this type of tasks.
Being tired is not an excuse to stop from doing something, from helping
others. We all have a choice to and capacity to succeed in what we want to achieve.
Thus, I can relate this to what happened to ASA-AdU last December 3 at Virlanie
Foundation.

ASA-AdU’s P.R.O., distributed jelly acecandies to special children

III. Conclusion

A. How did this activity relate to your organization’s mission and vision?

We, at ASA-AdU wanted to strengthen our God-given wisdom by formulating

programs that can stimulate societal awareness, poverty alleviation, social
transformation and societal change. We aim to inspire others to take a stand as well
as in striving to have a better society where everyone is accepted despite their social
status, wealth, level of education, income, etc. To encourage the scholars to embody
the true meaning of being a Vincentian, and that is having a heart for the poor. That a
Vincentian Scholar is willing to help even if he/she will not be recognized or publicized.
As our Vision says, “The Academic Scholars Alliance of Adamson University (ASA-
AdU) is a community of learned individuals that recognizes, develops, promotes and
maximizes the full human potential of its members and fellow students in the
University”. A Vincentian Scholar will not only give a hungry person temporary grace
to sustain his needs for a day, but instead he/she will inspire others and teach them to
live a sustainable life every day. And hopefully, when the time comes that he/she is
now able to sustain for himself, he/she may be able to do the same for others in need.

B. How did this activity relate to the University’s mission and vision?

As stated in our University’s Mission,” As a Vincentian Community, we inspire

others to follow the example of St. Vincent De Paul, who led and organized his
contemporaries in creatively responding to those who are in need”. As we conduct
outreach activities, our goal is to instill in the minds of our members, the virtues of St.
Vincent to guide them to learning these virtues as they put it into practice. Our activity
aims to contribute in embodying our mission, that’s why it is called Project S.M.I.L.E.S:
Scholars’ Movement in Inspiring LivES, because we want to start a movement in
helping those sectors that are being neglected by the society through our simple ways.
We believe that through inspiring others to take a step towards social transformation
this can lead us closer to our goal, more so if we do it together. It is our responsibility
as Vincentians to continue St. Vincent’s legacy in living a life of charity by reaching our
helping hand to those who are in need and disadvantaged, may it be poor in terms of
wealth, social acceptance, love or faith.
