Fruit and vegetables can be placed on distant markers such as trucks in excellent condition if placed
in polyethylene bags containing vermiculite ethylene blocks that absorb ethylene. The use of
polyethylene bags can increase the life of fruit and vegetables. It reduced the risk of fruit arriving at
mixed ripening condition to the supermarket. It prevents wilting, weight loss and retains the form
and appearance of the pack. It enables fruit to be delivered in their original fresh condition. Fruit
should be packed within 12 hours of being harvesting in order to get the best results and freshest
fruit after transport.

To minimise the fruit becoming overheated, the truck needs to be at 2°C and not below 0°C as this
causes the fruit to stress. Before ripening the fruit, the bag should be opened and the vermiculite
blocks should be removed so ethylene can be formed by the fruit in order to ripen. The temperature
of the refrigeration room after transport should be 2°C cooler than normal so that ripening does not
occur too fast and ruin the fruit.

Ventilation is also very important to ensure the same temperature is around the truck everywhere.
This prevents some parts of the fruit overheating and ripening before the rest of the fruit.
