CHAPTER I
A STUDY IN SCARLAT
PLOT:
EXPOSITION
The story begins in 1881, when Dr. Watson, having returned to London after serving in
the Second Anglo-Afghan War, runs into an old friend named Stamford at the Criterion
Restaurant, who had been a dresser under him at St. Bartholomew's Hospital. Watson
confides in Stamford that, due to a shoulder injury that he sustained at the Battle of
Maiwand, he has been forced to leave the armed services and is now looking for a place
to live. Stamford mentions that an acquaintance of his, Sherlock Holmes, is looking for
someone to split the rent at a flat at 221B Baker Street, but he cautions Watson about
Holmes's eccentricities.
RISING ACTION
Stamford introduces Watson to Holmes, Watson then presents all its missions and

Holmes begins an arduous investigation to catch the murderer, offering something

Then Lestrade arrives revealing That Stangerson has more recently Been Murdered. .
His dead body was found near the hotel window, stabbed through the heart. The only
things Stangerson Were With Him HAD a novel, a pipe, and a small box container
containing two pills. The pillbox Lestrade still have With Him. Holmes tests the pills on
an old and sickly Scottish terrier in residence at Baker Street. The first pill produces no
evident effect, the second kills the terrier. Holmes deduce That one was harmless and
the other poison.
RESOLUTION
Just at that moment, a very young street urchin named Wiggins arrives. He's the leader
of the "Baker Street Irregulars", a group of homeless children like to help Holmes
employs him occasionally. That Wiggins states he's Summoned the cab Holmes wanted.
Holmes SENDS him down to fetch the cabby, claiming to need help with His luggage.
When the cabbie comes upstairs and bends for the trunk, Holmes handcuffs and
restrains him. I was then a captive Announces the cabby as Jefferson Hope, the
murderer of Drebber and Stangerson.

CHARACTER:
Main character:
Sharlock Holmes, A brilliant and eccentric consulting detective. Holmes is a rather
enigmatic figure. His knowledge is specialized yet diverse. He is a talented violin player
and chemist, and is well-versed in sensational literature. It is implied that he is involved
in some drug usage, although this is never explicitly stated. His success in solving crimes
stems from his ability to observe and deduce. He has a tendency to be moody and he
sometimes experiences profound depression; he is also very solitary.
Dr. Jhon H. Watson, A military doctor who is wounded during the second Afghan war.
He is sent to recover in London, upon which he is introduced to Holmes and becomes
his roommate. He is intelligent, rational, calm, and steadfast.
Stamford, An old war friend of Watson's who introduces Watson and Holmes when

Enoch Drebber, The son of one of the Mormon Elders, Drebber is awarded Lucy
Ferrier's hand in marriage. He is pursued to the death by Jefferson Hope. His body is
found in an abandoned home in Lauriston Gardens, thus beginning the mystery.

SETTING
The history developed in London 1881. The place is described as is London, but to
explain all the events is done with a strange and sinister touch.
In the same story explain that year, however along to be narrating this is clearly seen
