CHAPTER I

THE PROBLEM AND ITS BACKGORUND

A. INTRODUCTION

July 16, 2008, under the administration of the former President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo,

John Gerald B. Santiago and Samantha Visconde, proposed the “PANTAWID PAMILYANG

PILIPINO PROGRAM (4P’S)” which aims to help the unfortunate Filipino citizens in their health

and educational status. This program was implemented on 2013 under the administration of former

President Benigno Simeon Aquino, III through the Department of Social Welfare and

Development. In the year 2010, Pres. Aquino also introduced to the Department of Education

(DepEd) together with the Commission on Higher Education (CHED) and Technical Education

and Skills Development Authority (TESDA) the new educational system known as K to 12

curriculum that was implemented recently. With these programs, population in most of the

institutions (especially in public schools) increased in percentage.

The “School-Based Monitoring System” is designed to promote the control system using

electronics to the establishments especially in schools but lack of employees. With this system, it

is easy to check the attendance of the students, the weather, the security, and also the number of

persons inside the campus from time to time. Also, if there are systems that help the humanity,

there will be less work and effort to do some exertion.

This project aims at designing and executing the advanced development in embedded

systems for monitoring and man power consumption. The proposed system is like; the data from

the other systems (weather system, fire alarm system, gate system and CCTV system) will be
transferred to the server (Graphical User Interface- GUI) through _________ Wi-Fi wireless

module connected to Arduino nano and the message from the server will dessiminated through

Global System for Mobile communication (GSM) to parents, students, employees, and faculty if

necessary.

B. STATEMENT OF THE PROBLEM

This study aims to verify the importance of automation, monitoring system, power

consumption and cost effectiveness to cater the needs in intelligent technologies. This study also

aims to specifically answer the following questions:

 Will the consumers afford this kind of project?

 Is it applicable to any kind of establishment?

 How it make the rate of man power consumption decreased?

 Is wireless better to use than cable?

 What are the advantages and disadvantages of the project?

 How long does the project will operate?

C. OBJECTIVES OF THE STUDY

The main purpose in the present field technologies are automation, power consumption and

cost effectiveness. Automation is intended to reduce man power with the help of intelligent

systems. Power saving is the main consideration forever as the sources of the power are getting
diminished due to various reasons. The main goal of the project is automated control system and

automatic information dissemination, this is to save the power. This kind of technology will help

us to minimize the man power consumption and effort by automatically monitor the whole area

and spread the information, this is much cost-effective for us.

The project aims to introduce the monitoring system, having intelligent technologies

installed in an institution to emphasize the purpose of automation, power consumption and cost

effectiveness and to demonstrate the project for the interested consumers and ECE students for

them to know the operation and effectiveness of the project.

D. IMPORTANCE OF THE STUDY

To the Designer

This design can enhance the knowledge and ability of the designer to produce School Based

Monitoring System applicable to their profession. The implementation of this study will help the

researchers in their technical advancement both in electronics and circuit. It also provides the

researchers knowledge and learning for incoming projects.

To the Academe

This project will provide the students with hand-on experience in building illustrative

School Based Monitoring System. It will also help student be familiarize with the simple design

process starting with the initial design, testing, troubleshooting and revising up to the final

production.

For the Institution

This trend of making a design project is an important part of economy reform process

aiming to promote automation, power consumption and cost effectiveness. This will help the

society to minimize the exertion of the citizens and uphold the intelligent technology.

To the Researcher

This will lead you towards relevant and reliable results they wanted to have. It would also

serve as an additional knowledge for them as they plan for the future.

E. SCOPE AND LIMITATION OF THE STUDY

F. DEFINITION OF TERMS

The following terms are defined operationally as used in the project:

Arduino.

Arduino is a computer hardware and software company, project, and user community that designs

and manufactures microcontroller kits for building digital devices and interactive objects that can

sense and control objects in the physical world.

Capacitor.

A capacitor is a passive two-terminal electrical component that stores electrical energy in an

electric field.

Circuit diagram.

A circuit diagram (electrical diagram, elementary diagram, electronic schematic) is a graphical

representation of an electrical circuit.

Connecting wires.

Connecting wires allows an electrical current to travel from one point on a circuit to another,

because electricity needs a medium through which to move.

Diode.

A diode is a specialized electronic component with two electrodes called the anode and the

cathode.

GSM.

GSM (Global System for Mobile communications) is an open, digital cellular technology used for

transmitting mobile voice and data services.

GSM shield.

The Arduino GSM Shield connects your Arduino to the internet using the GPRS wireless network.

GUI.

A graphical user interface (GUI) is a human-computer interface (i.e., a way for humans to interact

with computers) that uses windows, icons and menus and which can be manipulated by a mouse

(and often to a limited extent by a keyboard as well).

Integrated Circuit.

An integrated circuit (IC), sometimes called a chip or microchip, is a semiconductor wafer on

which thousands or millions of tiny resistors, capacitors, and transistors are fabricated.

Dot matrix LED Display.

Dot Matrix LED Displays are capable of displaying a full range of alphanumeric characters and

simple graphics when assembled in panels.

Matrix driver.

LED matrix drivers are monolithic high-efficiency LED drivers designed to supply LED arrays

used in the backlighting of LCD panels in consumer, industrial and automotive applications.

Microcontroller.

A microcontroller is a computer present in a single integrated circuit which is dedicated to perform

one task and execute one specific application. It contains memory, programmable input/output

peripherals as well a processor.

Power supply.

A power supply is an electronic device that supplies electric energy to an electrical load.

Resistor.

A resistor is a passive two-terminal electrical component that implements electrical resistance as

a circuit element.

Server.

Server (computing), a system that responds to requests across a computer network to provide, or

help to provide, a network or data service.

WiFi.
Wi-Fi or WiFi is a technology for wireless local area networking with devices based on the IEEE

802.11 standards.
