Actually, since companies produce so much


waste, and considering we pay
for their products and services,
it can be argued that
they need to be even more aware
of the effects from their choices than the average
person.

While the Tata Nano is making waves in India and across the Global Auto world for its smart design
and affordability. However, the larger issue of energy conservation, environment pollution and smarter
use of clean energy still remain.

In this context it is worthwhile to note the "Clean Energy for a Smarter Planet" initiative launched by
IBM worldwide. IBM and Harvard University, Dept of Chemistry and chemical biology have joined
hands on the Clean Energy Project. What really makes this initiative smart is the effective contribution
of the World Community Grid members across the world!
World Community Grid simply uses the downtime of computers across the globe to add power to
Research projects like the Harvard University clean energy project and other life saving research.

CINCINNATI, Aug. 05 /CSRwire/ - The Procter & Gamble Company (NYSE:PG) today announced a
new social sustainability and social media campaign called the Give Health Clean Water Blogivation
that will kick-off at the BlogHer 2010 Conference August 6-7. In partnership with Changents.com and
P&G's Children's Safe Drinking Water program (CSDW), the Give Health Clean Water Blogivation
will showcase the power of female bloggers to improve the lives of people in need of clean drinking
water. To participate, female bloggers "give" a post for clean water and use their voice to rally online
communities to vote for their story to help donate clean water. For every post and vote, P&G will
donate a day of clean water to a person in need. The blogger with the most votes as of August 27, 2010
will win a trip to accompany Dr. Greg Allgood of CSDW on a clean water expedition in Africa and
write the exclusive story. They will also receive a $15,000 donation to a 501c3 charity that tackles
water issues.

The Give Health Clean Water Blogivation is a unique engagement campaign that uses the power of
digital storytelling to link online consumer actions with offline community impacts. Through its
partnership with Changents.com, P&G will share the stories of its employees and partners behind the
scenes of CSDW and of a humanitarian photographer documenting the global water crisis at
www.GiveHealthBlogivation.com. CSDW Director Dr. Greg Allgood and photographer Cate Cameron
will tell their stories to inspire consumers and provide resources for how they can be a part of the
solution.

Children's Safe Drinking Water program to connect real women who care about water issues with the

5.DAVAO LIGHT

Davao Light and Power Co. turned over last Tuesday, September 21, a new library hub building to the
Department of Education – Davao City Division. It is constructed at the campus of the F. Bustamante Central
Elementary School in Tibungco, Davao City.

The library hub is the first to be donated by the electric utility but the second to be constructed in the city. The
first one is located at the crossing of Magallanes and Bolton Streets in the downtown area.

The project is part of Davao Light's continuing support to the Department of Education's “Adopt-a-School”
program. It costs about P1.5 million with the electric utility putting up P1.350 million. The Local Government Unit
(LGU) of Davao City under then Mayor Rodrigo R. Duterte (now the city vice mayor) put in P150 thousand as
counterpart.

The library hub is provided with a librarian’s office, a conference and computer room, a bookbinding room, a
comfort room, and book shelves. All windows are in steel casement and have built-in iron grills to ensure
security of the books placed inside.
Davao Light's Executive Vice President Art M. Milan in his turnover message told DepEd officials who came to
witness the turnover ceremony that in partnering with the city government in the construction of the library hub it
was guided with the company’s driving motto of “Passion to Serve”.

Milan said education is a primary focus of the company’s corporate social responsibility (CSR) program
believing that education moulds today’s youth to become the leaders of the country in the future.

Davao City Mayor Sara Duterte whose speech was read by her representative Ms. Malou Bermudo, department
head of the City Social Services Department, thanked the Aboitiz-owned electric company for being supportive
to the cause for literacy. She cited the many city-initiated program where the utility made its assistance readily
available.

For her part, Davao City Division Superintendent Dr. Helen Paguican told teachers, principals and supervisors
of the different public elementary schools in the second district that they have to see to it that they can make
use of the books offered for lending at the library hub.

She said that the success of the library hub is not measured by the neatness of the appearance of the books but
on how these are being read by the students of the schools that borrowed them. Paguican committed to
treasure the donated facility by assuring Davao Light, the Aboitiz Foundation, Inc. and its partner the City of
Davao, of the library hub’s utmost care.

A library hub is a facility that serves as a warehouse for books and other supplemental reading materials that
schools can borrow to augment elementary students reading paraphernalia.

6.JOLLIBEE and CHOWKING: Big Winners at the


Asian CSR Awards
Not only are Jollibee and Chowking known for their great tasting food, but now, Asia knows that these
two mega brands under the Jollibee Foods Corporation are both leaders in corporate social
responsibility.

Last September 26, 2006, Jollibee and Chowking were each presented with a Merit Award at the Asian
CSR Awards held at the Crown Plaza Hotel. Out of 178 entries from 14 countries, Jollibee and
Chowking garnered first-runner up accolades for their CSR programs.

The Merit Award under the Concern for Health category was given to Jollibee for its Deaf
Employment Program—a program that has had over 300 hearing impaired trainees in the past eight
years at selected Jollibee stores, while Chowking emerged as a Merit Awardee under the Best
Workplace Practices category for its Cooks’ Certification Program.

For Jollibee, implementing the Deaf Employment Program not only allowed them to provide equal
opportunity to the differently-abled, it has also given them the opportunity to pass on valuable skills to
help the hearing-impaired assimilate into the mainstream workplace much more easily. Today, many
program members still continue to be part of the Jollibee family, while others have pursued
entrepreneurial endeavors—a path inspired by learning and working with Jollibee. It is JFC’s plan to
spread this Deaf Employment Program to the other SBUs in the following years and begin employing
the hearing-impaired at all company-owned stores.
Meanwhile, Chowking’s five-year-old Cooks’ Certification Program was initially created to win
customer loyalty to the consistency of the taste of Chowking products. Today, with some 2,600 cooks
certified, it is no longer just the customers who are benefiting from the program. Many of the cooks
enrolled in the program only had a high school level education, but thanks to the Cooks Certification
Program, these same cooks have become more employable and even get pirated for overseas jobs.
Chowking has proven that the great tasting food and a customer-first attitude are not only good for the
company, but also for the employees benefit by building their capabilities and their prospects for a
brighter future.

7.WORLD COCOA FOUNDATION Pledges To Make Cocoa-Growing Sustainable


The World Cocoa Foundation announced sustainability principles and goals (PDF) to help guide
industry efforts and prioritize the foundation’s development projects in West Africa, Southeast Asia and
the Americas.
The foundation and its members say they are committed to working towards responsible environmental
stewardship in cocoa-farming communities where soil and water are conserved, following Integrated
Pest Management approaches to limit the use of chemicals.
In addition, the foundation also pledged to improve profits for farmers so that it is more equitable and
to ensure that international labor standards and farming practices are safe in cocoa-farming
communities.

8.KELLOG Improves On Energy & Water Use, CO2 Emissions


Kellogg has decreased energy use by 4.5 percent, cut CO2 emissions by 4 percent, and cut water use
almost 7 percent per metric ton of food since 2005,according to its first Corporate Responsibility
Report (PDF)
The amount of waste it has generated in that same period has increased about 6 percent.
Kellogg says it has established a new senior management structure to oversee environment
sustainability and is working with the industry to drive sustainable packaging and define sustainable
agriculture.
The company has set a goal of 15 percent to 20 percent reduction (compared with 2005 baselines) in
energy use, GHG emissions, water use, and waste per metric ton of food produced by 2015.
Last summer, the company made the Ethisphere Institute’s 2008 list of 2008 World’s Most Ethical
Companies.

9.DOLE

Health and Medical Programs (Ecuador)

In Ecuador, another of la Fundación Dale’s efforts (the Dale "to give" Foundation) is the implementation and
development of health programs, including the creation of medical infrastructures and raising medical awareness
in the rural communities.

The initiative to develop the Dale Foundation started in 1998, when Dole
began rapidly expanding operations in Ecuador with a series of new
investments focused on increasing the number of Company-owned farms
and building a private shipping port.
In the beginning, the Dale Foundation’s actions focused on farms owned
by Dole and the surrounding areas. In 2004 however, the scope of the
Foundation expanded and independent growers who produced for Dole were invited to contribute
financially to the Foundation’s work.
The Foundation mainly focuses on three areas:
• Health Programs
• Education Programs
• Community Programs

Medical Dispensaries
The Dale Foundation has built 15 dispensaries to date, which are open from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m., Monday
through Friday and from 8.00 a.m. to noon on Saturdays.
The dispensaries are set up in portable buildings that are strategically located according to the
concentration of farms, but can easily be moved to another location. In addition, there are five mobile
units, which visit remote areas according to a pre-established program.
In addition to diagnosing illnesses and providing medicine to the
communities, the medical staff is also qualified to perform minor
surgeries.
This medical service is not limited to Dole employees, but is open to the
communities at large. For a small fee, anyone living in the community can
receive medical attention. In 2005, a total of 14,386 patients were treated.

Other Health and Medical Programs


The Foundation is also active in performing:
• Lab Tests
The objective of this program is to prevent diseases and detect ailments in a timely manner. In 2005, a
total of 7,660 lab tests were performed.

• Vaccination Programs
The Dale Foundation’s medical staff visits each of the farms to carry out inoculation programs. For
example in 2005 alone, a total of 7,335 people were vaccinated against tetanus and 2,093 people
against hepatitis.

• Critical Cases Programs


Thanks to the medical check-ups and diagnoses carried out by the
Foundation’s medical services, critical health problems were detected in a
timely manner for some people. When a serious ailment is found, the
Foundation provides financial support for those individuals who need to seek specific treatments. The
Foundation has established partnerships with different specialized medical centers, as a means to
decrease treatment costs for our workers and their families. So far, the Company has been able to help
hundreds of people receive necessary treatment at a lower cost.

• Medical Specialty Programs


The Foundation also provides specialty medical services such as: dentistry, dermatology and optometry.

• Uterine Cancer Prevention Programs


The Foundation has an active Uterine Cancer Prevention Program, which, in 2005 alone, enabled over
800 women to receive PAP smear tests.

• Deparasitization Programs
The Foundation also developed a deparasitization program as a way to decrease gastrointestinal
diseases. In 2005, approximately 6,000 people were treated under this program.
