Dear Friend,
Greetings in the precious name of our Lord Jesus Christ. This is a
beautiful time of year in New England. The air has changed and the trees are
beginning to turn colors. It always amazes me how wonderful and impressive the
Lord is, for He could have just let the leaves fall in dull colors, but instead He
designed them to be red and orange and yellow! Man is a funny sort of creature,
in that we will pay thousands of dollars for an interpretation of autumn and pay
little attention to the original artistry the Lord created. We hang the pictures on
our walls and set alarms and lock the doors so they won't be stolen, yet even the
poorest of the poor can enjoy God's masterpieces in the sky and throughout
nature every day!
The Scripture says, "The heavens declare the glory of God; and the
firmament sheweth His handiwork" (Psalm 19:1). This word, "handiwork"
comes from two words: "an action or work," and "hand." Simple, but important,
because the Lord Himself handles His creation, which includes you and me! No
wonder the very heavens are so spectacular, for Almighty God designed them to
be brilliant in color. When He created man in the beginning, there was no death,
sickness, or hatred. Man was created simply and perfectly. But man was given a
choice to obey God or disobey God. He chose to disobey and because God
cannot fellowship sin (because He is pure) and cannot co-exist with darkness or
anything shady (because He is pure light), man died that day. He was driven out
of the presence of God in the Garden of Eden, mainly because if he ate of the
Tree of Life he would have been trapped in that sinful state for eternity. But God
in His mercy, drove him out with a plan to redeem him.
In the fullness of time, God sent forth His Son on a mission. I may be
wrong, but in studying these words in the original it seems to me that the Lord
debated, not so much what to do, but the cost of doing what needed to be done.
What was needed to redeem man was such a high cost and would be so contrary
to common sense that it seemed almost foolish to go through with what needed
to be done. He weighed the pros and cons of it. If another way could be
successful Jesus may not have come. But even the best man could do fell far too
short of the fellowship God longed for with His people. When He weighed the
pros and cons, the cons outweighed any pro by a million miles... were it not for
the fact that He so loved our world. Yes, He loves your world. Yes, He wants to
be in your world, to speak with you, and to heal you, and to fellowship you. Yes,
the Lord wants you to make heaven your home with Him for all eternity. He has
never had a doubt about that!
Then in the Garden of Gethsemane, the Lord Jesus Christ finally
committed completely to that perfect will of the Father: to willingly lay His life
down so that you and I could live. "Greater love hath no man than this, that a
man lay down His life for His friends" (John 15:13). Is there a greater, deeper
love than that? Love drove Him to that terrible unbearable day. It was the only
time in Scripture where God actually turned His back away from His perfect
man, while He bore the weight of my sins and yours on Calvary's cross. For
every time we turned away from the Lord, He turned towards the Father for our
sake. He gave His back to the smiters for every time we turned our back on Him.
He opened His hands to the nails for every time humanity had closed its fist. He
allowed His feet to be fastened to the cross for every time we went astray. He
took the mocking and discouragement for each time we spoke against Him and
others. Yes, the price was very high, to the extreme. Many say it was not worth it
when they look at the condition the world is in. But it was worth it to Him who
loves us! If we will turn to Him with all our hearts, He will help us become
overcomers and begin His workmanship in us. That workmanship ultimately
leads us to fellowship between God and His people. Let today be the day you
allow the Master craftsman begin a work in your life. You will never regret it!
