Installation notes for fitting the chain and toothed belt drive

Triumph
Bonneville/ T100/ SE, America, Speedmaster, Scrambler, Thruxton
During the entire assembly process, make sure that the toothed belt is not kinked

Disassemble the rear wheel, swingarm, exhaust and chain set. Clean the vehicle thoroughly (chain grease).
Remove the chain wear guard on the swing arm. Clean the teeth on the drive shaft. Push the front belt pulley
into the drive shaft to check the play. If the drive shaft is seen to have excess play in the teeth as a result of
high mileage or due to driving with insufficiently tightened securing nuts, please contact VH Motorradtechnik
by telephone on +49 441 34924. Check the final shaft bearing for play and damage.

Fit the toothed belt and the swing arm. Only tighten the
swing arm pins loosely since the swing arm is not pulled
into the correct position until the toothed belt is
tensioned. Clean thoroughly and degrease the contact
points on the drive shaft, toothed disk and nut. Coat both
sides of all contact points with plenty of medium-strength
(blue) Loctite threadlocker. Lightly grease the safety plate
on both sides. Push the toothed disk onto the drive shaft
(label on the outside).
Support the toothed disk with a 10 mm aluminium pin and
tighten the nuts to 180 Nm. Secure the safety plate
repeatedly. Before starting up leave the threadlocker to
harden for approx. 6 hours at room temperature.

Now the rear wheel and belt must be made parallel by

placing the aluminium square profile on the tyres. The
aluminium square profile must be parallel to the toothed
belt if it is applied to both tyre flanks (rotate the rear
wheel several times beforehand and measure it in 3
places).
Then tension the belt precisely and mark the
position of the chain or belt adjuster with a drawing pin.

Durchbiegung

The belt tension should be 13-15 mm (America and

Speedmaster 10 - 12 mm) deflection at 8 kg bending force
Durchbiegekraft when cold and not under tension (measuring point: half
the distance to the axle). The belt tension increases due to
the heat from normal operation.

Bonneville/T100/SE, Scrambler und Thruxton:
Fix the belt guard to the front supporting point (12 mm
plain washer behind the retainer), align it to the rear and
mark the position of the second securing point by drilling
the guard. Then fit the swing arm with a 6 mm thread.
Lower the hole for the rivet so that the belt guard lies
completely flat on the underside of the rocker.

America, Speedmaster:
Mount the rear axle from the right side (drive side).
Install the belt cover so, that by a correctly tensioned belt
is a distance from about 2 mm between belt cover and
disk. Determined by stopping at the front swing arm
mounting point the belt cover and the arm provided with
a rivet.

Fix the belt guard to the front supporting point, align it to

the rear and mark the position of the second securing
point by drilling the guard.
Then fit the swing arm with a 6 mm threaded blind rivet.
Lower the hole for the rivet so that the belt guard lies
completely flat on the underside of the rocker.
