CHAPTER I

INTRODUCTION

BACKGROUND OF THE STUDY

Social media are computer-mediated technologies that facilitate the creation and sharing of information,

ideas, career interests and other forms of expression via virtual communities and networks. The variety of

stand-alone and built-in social media services currently available introduces challenges of definition;

however, there are some common features:

*Social media are interactive Web 2.0 Internet-based applications.

*User-generated content, such as text posts or comments, digital photos or videos, and data

generated through all online interactions, is the lifeblood of social media.

*Users create service-specific profiles for the website or app that are designed and maintained by

the social media organization.

*Social media facilitate the development of online social networks by connecting a user's profile

with those of other individuals or groups.

Statement of the Problem

This study aims to know the effect and importance of social media to the ICT student of ACLC

Specially, this study seeks answer to the following question:

1. What are the benefits of social media in term of business?

2. What are the benefits of social media in term of Communication?

3. What are the benefits of social media in term of Student?

4. What are the common advantages and disadvantages of social media in our life?

5. How can social media affect our daily lives?

Page|
Significance of the Study

This is deemed significant of the following:

ICT students can improve the use of social media in order to gain the benefits of the media platforms and

to avoid the negative outcome when it is used improperly.

To the student of ACLC they can use this as a guide to get additional knowledge and information.

Teachers can also improve their teaching technique via socializing with other professionals thru social

Medias.

Researchers believe that this study is important to the society to give more information to the

people that doesn’t know what does social media can help and affect our daily lives.

Teachers and administrators can get details for use of social media sites for catering. By this way

it will improve their garnets and can be taught to students.

It will also help you to gather some information of someone just by clicking and searching its

name on the social media. This will surely help students in order for them to search what they want to

search about that certain person.

Our research paper can help other ICT students to learn more about social Medias and what are

the benefits of it in our daily lives.

CHAPTER II

DISCUSSION

A. Social media information

Social media Users typically access social media services via web-based technologies

on desktop, and laptops, or download services that offer social media functionality to their mobile

devices (smartphones and tablet computers). When engaging with these services, users can create

highly interactive platforms through which individuals, communities, and organizations can share,

co-create, discuss, and modify user-generated content or pre-made content posted online.

They introduce substantial and pervasive changes to communication between businesses,

organizations, communities, and individuals. Social media changes the way individuals and large

organizations communicate. These changes are the focus of the emerging fields of techno self-studies.

Social media differ from paper-based media (e.g., magazines and newspapers) or traditional

electronic media such as TV broadcasting in many ways, including quality, reach, frequency, interactivity,

usability, immediacy, and permanence. Social media outlets operate in a dialogic transmission system

(many sources too many receivers).

This is in contrast to traditional media which operates under a monologic transmission model (one

source too many receivers), such as a paper newspaper which is delivered to many subscribers, or a radio

station which broadcasts the same programs to an entire city. Some of the most popular social media
Page|
websites are Baidu Tieba, Facebook (and its associated Facebook

Messenger), Gab, Google+, Myspace, Instagram, LinkedIn, Pinterest, Tumblr, Twitter, Viber, VK, WeC

hat, Weibo, WhatsApp, Wikia, Snapchat, . These social media websites have more than 100,000,000

registered users.

In America, a survey reported that 84 percent of adolescents in have a Facebook account. Over

60% of 13 to 17-year-olds have at least one profile on social media, with many spending more than two

hours a day on social networking sites. According to Nielsen, Internet users continue to spend more time

on social media sites than on any other type of site.

At the same time, the total time spent on social media sites in the U.S. across PCs as well as on mobile

devices increased by 99 percent to 121 billion minutes in July 2012 compared to 66 billion minutes in July

2011.For content contributors, the benefits of participating in social media have gone beyond simply social

sharing to building a reputation and bringing in career opportunities and monetary income.

Observers have noted a range of positive and negative impacts of social media use. Social media

can help to improve individuals' sense of connectedness with real or online communities, and social media

can be an effective communication (or marketing) tool for corporations, entrepreneurs, nonprofit

organizations, including advocacy groups and political parties and governments.

At the same time, concerns have been raised about possible links between heavy social media use

and depression, and even the issues of cyberbullying, online harassment and "trolling". Currently, about

half of young adults have been cyberbullied and of those, 20 percent said that they have been cyberbullied

regularly.

page|
Another survey was carried out among 7th grade students in America, which is known as the

Precaution Process Adoption Model. According to this study, 69 percent of 7th grade students claim to

have experienced cyberbullying and they also said that it is worse than face to face bullying, However

both the bully and the victim are negatively affected, the intensity, duration, and frequency are the three

aspects that increase the negative effects on both of them.

B. History of social media

1997: The Birth of Social Media-The first social media site that everyone can agree

actually was social media was a website called Six Degrees. It was named after the ‘six degrees

of separation’ theory and lasted from 1997 to 2001. Six Degrees allowed users to create a profile

and then friend other users. Six Degrees even allowed those who didn’t register as users to

confirm friendships and connected quite a few people this way.

From Six Degrees, the internet moved into the era of blogging and instant messaging. Although

blogging may not seem like social media precisely, the term fits because people were suddenly able to

communicate with a blog other instantly as well as other readers. The term “blog” is a form of the phrase

“Weblog” which was coined by Jorn Barger, an early blogger that was the editor of the site “Robot

Wisdom.”

From there, ICQ was born and most members of Generation X remember ICQ and the service that was

created shortly thereafter, America Online, with AOL’s instant messenger especially prominent in the

social media lineup.

1. 2000: The Internet is everywhere

By the year 2000, around 100 million people had access to the internet, and it became quite

common for people to be engaged socially online. Of course, then it was looked at as an odd hobby

at best. Still, more and more people began to utilize chat rooms for making friends, dating and
Page|
discussing topics that they wanted to talk about. But the huge boom of social media was still to

come.

Although the younger generation of today might not know about it, back in the early 2000’s the

website Myspace was the popular place to set up a profile and make friends. Myspace was the original

social media profile website, leading into and inspiring websites like Facebook.

But even though Myspace has a very small user base today compared to Facebook and Twitter,

there are musicians who have used Myspace to promote their music and even be heard by record producers

and other artists. Colbie Caillat is an example.

Another website that was one of the beginning social media websites was LinkedIn, still a social media

website today, geared specifically towards professionals who want to network with each other.

In fact, most of the social media websites we have today are similar to LinkedIn, in that they are

specifically about one particular thing, or they have some kind of unique quality that has made them

popular. While Myspace was a general social media site, LinkedIn was, and is still is, meant for

professional businesspeople to connect with each other to network, find jobs and socialize.

2. 2005: Facebook and Twitter-

In 2004, Mark Zuckerberg launched what would soon become the social media giant that would set the

bar for all other social media services. Facebook is the number one social media website today and it

currently boasts over a billion users.

However, back in 2004, Facebook (TheFacebook.com then) was launched just for Harvard students.

Zuckerberg saw the potential and released the service to the world at the website facebook.com.
page|
In 2006, the popularity of text messaging or SMS inspired Jack Dorsey, Biz Stone, Noah Glass and Evan

Williams to create Twitter, a service that had the unique distinction of allowing users to send “tweets” of

140 characters or less. Today, Twitter has over 500 million users.

3. Around 2010: The Rest of the Pack-

Before long, there were dozens of other websites providing social media services of some kind. Flickr was

one of the earliest and still is one of themost popular photo sharing sites, but others include Photobucket

and Instagram, with Instagram gaining popularity today as one of the top social media sites to include on

business cards and other media.

Tumblr, a microblogging website started in 2007by David Karp and now owned by Yahoo, is one of the

sites that could be seen sprouting up in the late 2000s. Foursquare was quite a popular website for a while,

particularly with smartphones being used so extensively, and then there is Pinterest, Spotify, and many

others. Some of the most popular social media platforms in the late 2000’s included: Google Buzz, Loopt,

Blippy, and Groupon.

One of the things that started happening right in this time period is that social media not only became

widely used, it also became widespread in business.

Websites were starting to list their social media addresses, businesses would include Facebook and Twitter

addresses on their television commercials and many tools were being built to include social media on

websites – for example: WordPress plugins that would allow users to include not only links to their social

media websites, but also to include their latest social media posts directly on their websites.

Page|
Social media icons were seen everywhere and it became almost unusual to see businesses or brands

without them.

In addition, social media began to be one of the ways in which internet marketers and website owners

would boost the visibility of their websites. The benefits of social media marketing for business began to

become quite clear to business owners large and small. Social media bookmarking became quite popular

and there were services that would bookmark a post or a website across dozens or even hundreds of social

media services.

4. Social Media Today-

Social media today consists of thousands of social media platforms, all serving the same – but slightly

different purpose. Of course, some social media platforms are more popular than others, but even the

smaller ones get used by a portion of the population because each one caters to a very different type of

person.

For example: Instagram caters to the kind of person that communicates through photographs best, and

other platforms such as Twitter are perfect for those who communicate in short bursts of information. As

mentioned, businesses are using social media to promote their products and services in a brand new way

and so each form of social media serves a purpose that the others available may not.

5. The Future of Social Media-

Although it is impossible to know what the future of social media holds, it is clear that it will continue.

Humans are social animals and the more ability to communicate with each other on the level that each

person likes best, the more prevalent social media will become. With new and exciting technologies just

around the corner, social media will be interesting to see in the coming decades.

page|
C. The history of social networking-
Long before it became the commercialized mass information and entertainment juggernaut it is

today, long before it was accessible to the general public, and certainly many years before Al Gore claimed

he “took the initiative in creating” it, the Internet – and its predecessors – were a focal point for social

interactivity. Granted, computer networking was initially envisioned in the heyday of The Beatles as a

military-centric command and control scheme. But as it expanded beyond just a privileged few hubs and

nodes, so too did the idea that connected computers might also make a great forum for discussing mutual

topics of interest, and perhaps even meeting or renewing acquaintances with other humans. In the 1970s,

that process began in earnest.

D. Cyberbullying

The Cybercrime Prevention Act of 2012, officially recorded as Republic Act No. 10175, is

a law in the Philippines approved on September 12, 2012. It aims to address legal issues concerning online

interactions and the Internet in the Philippines. Among the cybercrime offenses included in the bill

are cybersquatting, cybersex, child pornography, identity theft, illegal access to data and libel.

While hailed for penalizing illegal acts done via the Internet that were not covered by old laws, the

act has been criticized for its provision on criminalizing libel, which is perceived to be a curtailment in

freedom of expression.

On October 9, 2012, the Supreme Court of the Philippines issued a temporary restraining order,

stopping implementation of the Act for 120 days, and extended it on 5 February 2013 "until further orders

from the court."

On May 24, 2013, The DOJ announced that the contentious online libel provisions of the 0law had

been dropped.
Page|
On February 18, 2014, the Supreme Court ruled that section 5 of the law decision was

constitutional, and that sections 4-C-3, 7, 12 and 19 were unconstitutional.

Cyberbullying or cyber harassment is a form of bullying or harassment using electronic means. It

has become increasingly common, especially among teenagers. Harmful bullying behavior can include

posting rumors, threats, sexual remarks, a victims' personal information, or pejorative labels (i.e., hate

speech).Bullying or harassment can be identified by repeated behavior and an intent to harm. Victims may

have lower self-esteem, increased suicidal ideation, and a variety of emotional responses, including being

scared, frustrated, angry, and depressed. Cyberbullying may be more harmful than traditional bullying.

Awareness in the United States has risen in the 2010s, due in part to high-profile cases. Several

US states and other countries have laws specific to cyberbullying. Some are designed to specifically target

teen cyberbullying, while others use laws extending from the scope of physical harassment. In cases of

adult cyber harassment, these reports are usually filed beginning with local police.

Research has demonstrated a number of serious consequences of cyberbullying victimization.

Internet trolling is a common form of bullying over the Internet in an online community (such as in online

gaming or social media) in order to elicit a reaction, disruption, or for someone's own personal

amusement. Cyberstalking is another form of bullying or harassment that uses electronic communications

to stalk a victim; this may pose a credible threat to the victim.

Not all negative interaction online or on social media can be attributed to cyberbullying. Research

suggests that there are also interactions online that result in peer pressure, which can have a negative,

positive, or neutral impact on those involved.

page|
E. Most popular social networking worldwide

(Source: www.dreamgrow.com)

1. Facebook- Most of us already know that Facebook is the top social network on the web. It's a thriving

beast of a social networking site on the web with about 2 billion monthly active users and more than one

billion that log on daily (according to Facebook itself).

Statista shows that Facebook Messenger, with tons of cool features, is the second most popular

messaging app behind WhatsApp. People use Facebook individually and by joining or setting up groups.

After failing to acquire Snapchat in 2013, Facebook acquired WhatsApp in 2014 so that it could

be the one that was on top of instant messaging.

Page|
2. YouTube- Where does everyone go to watch or share video content online? It's obviously YouTube.

After Google, YouTube is the second largest search engine. Despite being owned by Google, YouTube

can still be recognized as a separate social network all on its own as the premiere place online to go to

watch videos on every topic under the sun and upload your own as well.

From music videos and movies, to personal vlogs and independent films, YouTube has it all.

YouTube also launched a premium subscription option, called YouTube Red, which removes all

advertisements from videos. It also now offers YouTubeTV, a separate live streaming subscription

service.

3. Instagram- Instagram has grown to be one of the most popular social networks for photo sharing that

the mobile web has ever seen. It's the ultimate social network for sharing real-time photos and short videos

while on the go.

Now it's even a leading advertising platform for brands as well as Instagram Influencers,

who legitimately generate income through the network.

The app had initially been available for the iOS platform for quite some time as it grew in

popularity, but has since expanded to Android and Windows phones, along with the web. Instagram was

bought for a hefty $1 billion by Facebook in 2012.

4. Twitter- Twitter is known as the real-time, public microblogging network where news breaks first.

Most users love it for its short message limit (now 280 characters) and unfiltered feed that showed them

absolutely everything in the form of tweets.

Twitter has changed dramatically over the years, and today it's criticized a lot for going the way

of looking and functioning almost exactly like Facebook. Besides Twitter Card integration, which now

makes it easy to share all sorts of multimedia content in tweets, you can expect to see algorithmic timelines

coming to Twitter as well.

page|
5. Google+ -Making its debut in the early summer of 2011, Google+ became the fastest growing social

network the web has ever seen. After failing a couple times already with Google Buzz and Google

Wave, the search giant finally succeeded at creating something that stuck . . . kind of.

Nobody really needed another Facebook clone, so Google+ had always been widely criticized for

being a social network that nobody really used. In late 2015, a brand new Google+ was rolled out to put

more emphasis on its Communities and Collections features to help differentiate the platform a bit more

and give existing users more of what they wanted.

F. Positive Impact of Social Media

Social media is an integral part of today’s society. With loads of information being disseminated

over the Internet, social media has become the very fabric upon which our society is being built. The

people who are at the forefront of molding the future of social networking sites are teens and children.

This is because vast majorities of the people who use the Internet are children and teens. Reportedly, many

teens spend an average of 8 hours online every day. Much of that time is thought to be spent on social

media sites, with only some attention focused on research and learning.

`For the past decade, social media has been touted as a platform for youngsters to congregate

online and interact socially as if they were in person, regardless of their distance from each other. There

are likely teens out there who do not know of many other uses of the Internet other than their favorite

social media platform.

Page|
1. Marketing- Almost all age groups are available on social media so instead of wasting money on ads,

campaigns, they become more consumer centric via social media. On the other hand, people also get

informed and learned about the products more frequently and easily in this mode.

2. Interaction-As the most common and most widespread use of social media is getting connected to

others and interacting with the world using the various social networking websites. So, people sitting far

away can connect within seconds and interact on a more intimate level so effortlessly.

3. Mass Awareness-One of the significant impacts of social media is the tremendously increased

awareness of the masses in context of the news and happenings going all around the world because internet

spreads news and reviews more rapidly than any other mode and social media makes them do so. So

people have become more aware and updated now.

4. Learning-The most significant thing that I see is the learning facilitation that it provides. Even a small

child who starts using these channels at an early stage of their lives develops communication skills.

Communication has become a lot easier. We can now easily communicate and maintain

relationships with people from any part of the world.

Social networking sites brought governance closer to people. Political leaders and government

officials are also using social network sites to interact with citizens.

Finding a job is never been this easier. One can build up her/his profile online, apply for jobs and

can attract the job opportunities.

page|
Healthy competition of businesses. Social media acts as a level playing field for businesses to

market themselves. People can now easily market their products.

Now people can express their opinions and can share their experiences easily.

Social media makes people aware of the happenings around the world.

It has become easier to help people in need. Whether it’s a medical emergency or a natural

calamity, people are forming groups and offering help.

Good also spread easily. Many are now donating used items to less fortunate.

We are meeting like-minded people.

G. Negative Impact of Social Media

Social media has changed the way people interact. In many ways, social media has led to positive

changes in the way people communicate and share information; however, it has a dark side, as well. Social

networking can sometimes result in negative outcomes, some with long-term consequences.

1. Deteriorated Productivity-As people spend most of their productive and working times interacting on

the social media, it obviously hampers the productivity of individuals. People get distracted a lot due to

these social media sites. It has been reported by Nucleus Research that Facebook adds to 1.5% of the total

off office productivity world-over.

2. Addiction-One of the most fatal consequences of social media is people getting addicted to it and using

it timelessly irrespective of thinking upon the fact that they have only 24 hours in a day. This addiction

leads to insomnia, mental stress, time killing and many health adversities in people, especially teenagers

who are the future of the nation.

Page|
3. Cyber-Bullying-This is really a serious issue when many of the people unintentionally fall prey to

terrorist activities, false claims and cybercrime tending to the extent of even provoking kids and teenagers

to commit suicides.

4. Hampers Privacy-It has been witnessed that people become more public and open about their personal

lives on social networks which really hampers their privacy. Photos uploaded may be misused. So this is

a major cause of concern.

H. Advantages and Disadvantages of Social Networking

Advantages- There are many reasons why someone may choose to take advantage of social networks

online.

1. Worldwide Connectivity-

No matter if you are searching for a former college roommate, your first grade teacher, or an international

friend, no easier or faster way to make a connection exists than social media. Although Facebook, Twitter,

LinkedIn and Pinterest are probably the most well-known social networking communities, new

websites are popping up regularly that let people connect and interact over the Web.

With each of these sites, individuals can make new friends, build business connections or simply extend

their personal base by connecting and interacting with friends of friends - which can have a multiplying

effect.

These connections can help with a variety of things such as:

page|
*Finding romance

*Seeking a new job

*Locating assistance

*Getting and giving product and service referrals

*Receiving support from like-minded individuals

*Making or receiving career or personal advice

And sharing political beliefs

*Accessing news in real time

In many ways, these social communities are the virtual equivalent of church socials where family

and friends gather to exchange news and get updates. Even the age-old custom of connecting with pen

pals has been upgraded as private messages can be sent over social media. When it comes to getting

information, few methods are faster than social media.

2. Commonality of Interest-

When you opt to participate in a social network community, you can pick and choose individuals

whose likes and dislikes are similar to yours and build your network around those commonalities. For

instance, if you are a chess aficionado, a book lover or have a particular political leaning, you can find

and interact with those who share your interest.

It can also be a great way to share tips and ideas. Sites like Pinterest have been very successful due

to the ease in which a person can learn - and share - information about hobbies, crafts, cooking, gardening

and other do-it-yourself activities. By pinning and sharing, you can attract like-minded individuals into

your circle.

But, just as these virtual groups can help hobbyists exchange ideas and techniques, other social

network groups offer solutions for more vexing, real-world problems. For example, social media groups
Page|
can be lifelines for individuals suffering from a rare disease. Churches, synagogues and temples also use

social media to reach out to members who may be unable to attend services.

3. Real-Time Information Sharing-

Many social networking sites incorporate an instant messaging feature, which lets people exchange

information in real-time via a chat. This is a great feature for teachers to use to facilitate classroom

discussions because it lets them utilize the vast store of information available on the Web. This can be a

great time saver for the teacher - since students no longer need to visit a library to conduct research- and

it can be a great way to engage distracted learners.

School is not the only setting where this type of real-time information sharing can be beneficial.

Social networking can provide a tool for managers to utilize in team meetings, for conference organizers

to use to update attendees and for business people to use as a means of interacting with clients or prospects.

Some leaders are going so far as to include Tweets or other social media updates during presentations.

This approach can make events more interactive and help the presenter reach a larger audience.

4. Targeted Advertising-

Whether you are non-profit organization that needs to get the word out about an upcoming

fundraiser or a business owner marketing a new product or service, there's no better way than social media

to get your message in front of millions of people 24/7.

Although social media can be used to spread a company's message for free, fee-based advertising

options are also available. One of the best aspects of social networking is the ability to deliver your content

only to those users with the most potential interest in your product or service. Each social platform offers

an array of tools that enable a business to deliver specific content to a very specific target group. This

approach can maximize targeted reach while minimizing waste.

page|
5. Increased News Cycle Speed-

Undoubtedly, social networking has revolutionized the speed of the news cycle. Most news

organizations now rely on social media sites to collect and share information. Social media - especially

Twitter - is steadily becoming a mainstream source for breaking news. Today an individual can know, in

real time, what is happening throughout the world. This has led to the development of a nearly

instantaneous news cycle as everything from terrorist attacks to local car crashes get shared on social

media, quickly alerting their intended audience of the event.

Part of the increase in the speed of news can be attributed to smartphones. The percentage of

individuals accessing social media via their phone or mobile device continues to rise. A 2014 Pew Center

study states that 40 percent of smart phone users access social media from their phones - and 28 percent

do it on a daily basis.

6. Disadvantages of Social Media-

Before diving too deep into the world of social media, perhaps you should consider some of these

possible pitfalls.

7. Backlash-

A joke among friends is one thing but a joke with the world at-large is much different. When

potentially offensive content is posted online, the amount of feedback can be excessive and is often brutal.

This is particularly true with highly opinionated subjects like politics and religion. This backlash can also

have a long-term impact on a person's future, especially in a world that has fallen prey to over-sharing.

Even high school students are learning that comments they post on social media can influence whether

a college approves their application for admission.

Page|
In an age where selfies are the norm, the over-sharing may even be altering our worldview by

creating a more narcissistic mindset.

8. Cyberbullying and Crimes against Children-

Use of social networks may expose individuals to other forms of harassment or even inappropriate

contact. This can be especially true for teens and younger children. Unless parents diligently filter the

Web content their family views, children could be exposed to pornography or other inappropriate content.

Besides unleashing age-inappropriate content, the digital age also gave birth to a social

phenomenon - cyberbullying. It is often levied more harshly against young females that males and, unlike

traditional bullying, it is not limited to physical interaction. Cyberbullying can happen 24 hours a day,

every day of the week. Adding to this realm of cyber abuse are the anonymous social media sites which

can elevate the severity of the assault - under the false promise of privacy.

9. Risks of Fraud or Identity Theft

Whether you like it or not, the information you post on the Internet is available to almost anyone

who is clever enough to access it. Most thieves need just a few vital pieces of personal information to

make your life a nightmare. If they successfully steal your identity, it could cost you dearly. A report on

Bank rate reveals Millennials are one of the fastest growing groups to be victims. This is linked to the

group's comfort with sharing everything online - including personal information.

10. Time Waster

Business Insider reports that social media is the most popular use of the Internet - surpassing email

- and smartphones and other mobile devices seem to be the driving force behind this trend since 60 percent

of the traffic is from a mobile source. The GlobalWebIndex poll shows that 28 percent of the time spent

online is on social networks. With these type of numbers, some of the time spent on social media occurs

at work. When these visits are for non-work related activity, it can cost companies money through lost

page|
productivity. A report on Forbes states that 89 percent of responders admitted to wasting time on social

media while at work.

11. Corporate Invasion of Privacy

Social networking invites major corporations to invade your privacy and sell your personal

information. Have you ever posted a comment on Facebook, only to notice an advertisement appear with

content related to your post? Last year, Facebook earned an estimated $16 billion in ad revenue. That's

not bad for a free site.

If Facebook and other social networking sites don't charge their members, however, how do they

make so much money? They do it by selling the ability to specifically target advertisements. On social

networking sites, the website isn't the product - the users are. These sites run algorithms that search for

keywords, web browsing habits, and other data stored on your computer or social networking profile and

provide you with advertisements targeted specifically to you.

I. Differing Opinions

Because networking and online social communities are so widespread, several studies have looked

at the effects of social networking. A common complaint, highlighted on debate.org, suggests social media

is making us less social and more aggressive. Comments on social media sites are often more blunt than

the statements would be if they were made face-to-face. But other sources, like Psychology Today, suggest

that social networking, like any other technological tool, is as good as a user makes it.

Active social network penetration in selected countries

(Source: www.statista.com)

This chart illustrates the projected number of social network users in 2017 and 2022 in selected

countries. Statista projects that close to 725 million Chinese internet users will access social networks in

2022, up from 596 million social network users in 2017.

J. Social media user development

Social network usage has been constantly undergoing double-digit growth which is projected to last until

2016 after which it will slow down to single-digit growth until 2017. Social networking growth has been

heavily influenced by mobile device usage development and increasing mobile internet penetration rates

worldwide. Social network users benefit from an expanded network and the ability to connect and keep

in touch with others. Social networking is one of the most popular online activities worldwide and social

media companies such as Facebook, Twitter and Weibo are very influential in terms of online
page|
interaction and digital marketing.

Social networking is also a growing force in the area of e-commerce as the niche of social commerce is

slowly expanding because of increased social feature integration on e-commerce sites. Consumers can

login to websites with social network IDs to simplify their registration and unify their online experience.

Facebook is the most popular social login network ID, followed by Google and Yahoo.

Social network usage is closely linked with concerns regarding online privacy. As of July

2013, more than 66 percent of US internet users had a photo of themselves online. Recently, internet

users have been rethinking the common display of sensitive data such as date of birth or email addresses

and have increasingly begun to commit to online privacy and anonymity management methods.

K. Philippines is one of world's top social media user

For the third year in a row, the Philippines emerged as the country that spent the most time on

social media, according to a report by creative agency We Are Social and social media management

platform Hootsuite.

An average Filipino social media user spends almost 4 hours on different platforms daily followed

by Brazilians and Indonesians, respectively, the report said.

The report said there are now 4.021 billion internet users worldwide as of January 2018 or more

than half of the global population (53 percent).

More than half of internet users (42 percent) or around 3.2 billion are active on social media with

9 in 10 of those users accessing their chosen platforms via mobile devices.

Page|
Nearly a million people began using social media for the first time every day last year, equivalent

to more than 11 new users per second.

Since January 2017, the number of internet users has grown by 248 million or 7 percent, the highest

of which was in Africa at 20 percent.

Mobile phones, particularly smartphones, have become the go-to device for accessing the internet

with a 52-percent share of the population followed by laptops and desktops at 43 percent.

Facebook continues to dominate the internet as the top social media platform with over 2.17 billion

users, followed by YouTube with 1.5 billion users, and messaging services WhatsApp and FB messenger

with 1.3 billion users each.

CONCLUSION

The following conclusion here are formulated based on the findings obtained:

1. Social media is a really convenient and important communicate network for all the people nowadays.

We can use it to know friends and keep contact with friends that came from different countries. We can

also share our ideas so quickly so that all the things could develop so fast because people could tell us

their ideas and we could improve it immediately. We could also learn new things on social media by

watching or reading the things that people shared onto the social media. People could also sell things on

social media freely which could reduce the expenditure of advertisements.

2. As social media is too convenient for people, almost most of them don't even have to 'speak out' to

communicate with people. No longer, people will lost their communication skills. The more serious

problem is many people utilized the power of social media and used it to bully someone. The power of

social media is also same as the one in real life. A little of them used social media to do things that against

the law, which is a fool behavior.

3. Social media changed our life so much. Our life became more convenient because social media is a

very useful tool for us in 21st century, it could help us to improve our life. However, we have to aware of

how we use them. If we could use the social media smartly, having social media will become a good

change for us.
