LINE STOPS
Line stopping, line plugging and stopples are different names
for the same process. Line stopping is a means of stopping flow
and providing a temporary shutoff where none exists, while your
system is running live and under working pressure.
Line stopping serves as a control, or temporary shutoff, that
can be removed after all modifications have been completed.
This process can be used to isolate piping systems or sections
for repairs, alterations or relocations without shutting the entire
system down.
Pro Tapping performs line stops from ¾″ to 36″ on lines with
a working pressure up to 1,000 PSI and up to 400ºF. Pro Tapping
recently completed a line stop on a 14″ CI water line, with 28 FPS
at 50 PSI. We can handle any type of line stop for you, too!
Line stopping employs a pressure-contained tapping/line
stopping machine, a temporary, specialty over-bored tapping valve
and a pressure-contained nozzle or split tee for line stopping
attached (welded or bolted) to the existing pressurized pipeline.
Line stops are generally performed on carbon steel, galvanized
steel, stainless steel, copper, brass, cast iron, ductile iron, transite/
ACP, PVC, concrete cylinder pipe and additional pipeline materials
per customer request. In many cases the fitting left in place during
the service can be used again at a later date for a restop.
Line Stops With Bypass
We use line stops with optional bypass hot/wet taps if
product flow must be continuous while the line stop is in place.
This method employs bypass hot or wet taps through the line
stop equipment or provides additional hot or wet taps before
and after each line stop to allow continuous flow of product.

VALVE INSERTIONS
Valve insertion is a method of inserting a specialty
gate or bell valve directly into an existing main, while
the existing pipeline is under working pressure, without
interruption of flow or service.
Valve Insertions for Copper
Insert a valve into your smaller copper lines without
interrupting flow or service! We can now insert a ball
valve directly into ½″ to 2″ types M, L and K copper
pipe, while the existing pipeline is under pressure. Valve
insertions for copper pipe can only be used on pipelines
containing hot water (up to 180 degrees), cold water or
glycol systems up to 200 PSI and air lines up to 125 PSI.
CI/DI Valve Insertions
Valve insertion employs a specialty pressure-contained
tapping/inserting machine, a full-port inserting valve and
a pressure-contained insertion sleeve that is attached
(bolted) to the existing pressurized pipeline. Valve
insertions can be performed on cast iron, ductile iron,
limited transite/ACP and limited concrete cylinder pipe.
Pro Tapping performs valve insertions on pipelines from
4″ to 20″. If you have an interest in larger sizes, please
refer to our line stops.
PIPE FREEZING
Pro Tapping now offers pipe freezing as a quick,
efficient, cost-effective alternative to pipe maintenance or
line modification without shutting down your system.
Using liquid nitrogen, we can isolate the problem in
a line with solid freeze plugs of the fluid within the line.
This process allows a minimum of draindown or refill, no
loss of expensive process fluids and, best of all, no system
shutdown. Once the job is completed, we thaw the plugs
and your line is immediately back in operation. Pipe freezing
is the most economical solution for ½″ through 48″ piping
systems with hot water lines up to 160º - 180º F.
To complete a successful pipe freeze, we establish
solid freeze plugs throughout your piping system and
expertly maintain them during pipe repairs. For optimal
performance, we constantly monitor the freeze plugs.
According to independent laboratory tests, no physical
changes in pipe structure occur due to the controlled
freezing process.
All our “No Shutdown Specialist” service teams are
uniquely qualified to perform pipe freezing - with safety as
their first concern. A project engineer carefully analyzes and
coordinates each pipe freezing project. This ensures proper
implementation of certified procedures during the entire
pipe freezing process for maximum quality control.
Most industrial and commercial applications can benefit
from the use of pipe freezing. They include valve
replacement, system maintenance and modifications.
Pipe freezing can be performed on a variety of pipes
under various conditions, including carbon steel, stainless
steel, transite, cast and ductile iron, aluminum coated
and lined, copper, lead, titanium, ½″ to 48″ OD,
vertical, horizontal and inclined, and out-of-round. A
wide range of fluids, including water and treated water,
sewage, brine, oils and petroleum products, glycols,
heavier hydrocarbons, chemicals, and slurries, can easily
accommodate pipe freezing.
Ultrasonic Pipe/Tank Wall Thickness Testing
Prevent pipe breaks before they happen! Corrosion is a problem
in closed loop pipeline systems for chiller and cooling water lines.
With all the tuberculation in water systems, a section of pipe can
erode and weaken. Pro Tapping can check the wall thickness of a
pipe to determine if a pipe failure is imminent.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS
What is the largest size tap that you can do on my
12″ carbon steel main?
We can tap size on size on any pipeline material except
concrete cylinder pipe.
Can you tap a steam line or a natural gas line?
We can tap lines containing anything and everything
except oxygen.
My main is in a ceiling. Can you do a tap off the
bottom of the pipe?
We can perform our services 360 degrees around
the main provided the fittings are installed square/
perpendicular to the main.
How do we know whether we should use a line
stop or a valve insertion?
You need to determine whether you need a temporary
or permanent service. A line stop is a temporary service,
although the fitting left in place can usually be used
for a restop. An in-line valve insertion is a permanent
service.
What is the difference between a Hot Tap and a
Wet Tap?
The services are the same. They both provide branch
connections. The difference lies in the pipeline
material.
Hot taps are performed on carbon, galvanized and
stainless steel, brass, copper and several other pipeline
materials. While this is normally a welded application,
in many cases we can provide a bolt-on application.
Many people call the service a “Wet Tap” because
the product in the pipeline is often liquid; for example
chilled, condenser or hot water.
Wet taps are performed on cast and ductile iron,
transite, concrete cylinder pipe and several other
pipeline materials. As you cannot weld these materials,
Wet taps are bolt-on applications. The mains generally
transport water or sewage.
