Dear Bake Sale Participant,

It takes one part love, one part family, one part fun and a touch of community to help end childhood
hunger in America. With these ingredients you are creating a recipe for success. One out of six
children is at risk of hunger in America. The results of your bake sale will enable these children to
have access to the nutritious food they need to learn, grow and thrive.

In its fifth year, Share Our Strength’s Great American Bake Sale® wants to welcome and thank new
and old participants. Your efforts will help make sure that no child grows up hungry. The bake sales
you hold continue to make a noticeable impact in our fight to end childhood hunger in our nation.

This year, we have partnered with Domino® Sugar, C&H® Sugar, Family Circle magazine and Food
Network. Working together with our sponsors, we have developed new recipes, tips and promotions
that will help you hold a bake sale that is a recipe for success.

As always, our Participant Resource Center is available online at www.greatamericanbakesale.

No Kid Hungry
About Share Our Strength
Share Our Strength® is a national
organization working to make sure no
kid in America grows up hungry.

We weave together a net of community groups, activists

and food programs to catch children at-risk of hunger and
surround them with nutritious food where they live, work
and play.

Since 1984, Share Our Strength has raised more than $200
million to fight hunger around the globe. Through the
dedication and commitment of thousands of volunteers,
chefs and corporate sponsors we have created awareness,
made resources available and developed programs that
provide a long-term solution to ending hunger worldwide.

Share Our Strength’s national strategy to end childhood hunger in America works to prevent hunger
on a state-by-state basis. Through comprehensive state partnerships, grant making activities and
nutrition education we find childhood hunger where it hides, and work to end it. In Washington,
DC, Share Our Strength has joined leading hunger advocacy groups and more than 150 community
organizations to establish The Partnership to End Childhood Hunger in the Nation’s Capital. Our goal
is to create similar partnerships in every state to end childhood
hunger in America.

We believe everyone has a strength, and

everyone has something to share. Share
your strength to make sure no kid goes
hungry.

2 THE GREAT AMERICAN BAKE SALE — no kid hungry

A Recipe for Success
The Great American Bake Sale
Share Our Strength’s Great American Bake Sale®, presented
by Domino® Sugar and C&H® Sugar, is a national campaign
that mobilizes Americans to end childhood hunger by holding
bake sales in their communities.

Since 2003, we have raised nearly $4 million through

the hard work of more than a million participants
including individuals, companies, restaurants,
organizations and schools. Anyone can participate
at anytime; all it takes is love, family, fun and
community to hold a successful bake sale.

Funds raised from Share Our Strength’s Great

STEPS FOR A SUCCESSFUL BAKE SALE

Gather Your Ingredients

Ask family and friends to join-in and help you prepare, bake and participate in
your bake sale. With more people you can spread out the workload, have more
fun and enjoy spending time with those who are most important to you.

Baking Basics
To begin, organize a team and assign roles and responsibilities. Decide
who is baking, who is packaging the baked goods and who will help
run the bake sale. Set a fundraising goal and pick a date and location
for your bake sale. Also, create a plan spanning a few weeks so that you
are not trying to organize your bake sale at the last minute.

A Pinch of Zest
Garner support from your community. By involving your community you’ll
have access to additional resources, raise more funds and meet new people.
Work with local businesses to receive donated baked goods, talk to schools and
community centers to borrow tables and chairs and rally your neighbors to
help you bake and sell.

Mix it Up
Provide a wide selection of baked goods for people to choose from.
Include garnishes and toppings on cakes and cookies to make the items
more enticing. Write your shopping list out as you plan what to sell to
make sure you don’t forget important ingredients.

Sweet Substitutions
Make your bake sale healthy by incorporating low-fat baked goods, whole
wheat flour, butter substitutes and desserts with fresh fruit. If you can, include
the nutritional information on the packaging. People with allergies will be
informed of the ingredients used in the baked good and those with dietary
concerns will have options. When packaging baked goods make sure the
portion sizes are appropriate.

4 THE GREAT AMERICAN BAKE SALE — no kid hungry

A Little Spice
Decorate your table and consider creating a theme — play off of a holiday
or community event. Themes and decorations will attract buyers and
possible media attention. You’ll have fun planning and decorating around
the theme and your bake sale will be more successful.

Preheat the Oven

Promote your bake sale by downloading and distributing the “Visit My
Bake Sale” flyer from the Participant Resource Center. Post the flyer
around your community — in your neighborhood, at local businesses, at
work and in places of worship. Print the media alert and send to local
newspapers, radio stations and television stations.

Add Some Frosting

Use decorative paper, ribbons and stickers to creatively package your baked
goods. Label your baked goods neatly and clearly and add a description or
personal information, such as Debbie’s Decadent Chocolate Cake.

Serve It Up
On the day of your bake sale arrive early to set-up and organize baked
goods on the display table. Make sure prices are easy to see and read. Create
promotions, such as a mix-and-match cookie tray, where buyers can choose
any three cookies for $3. Price whole pies and cakes to sell, and provide
buyers with stickers and information on Share Our Strength.

Whole Grain Organic Blueberry Muffins

• 1 1/2 cups all-purpose flour • 1 tsp. ground cinnamon
• 1 cup whole wheat flour • 2 large eggs
• 1 cup organic sugar • 1 cup buttermilk
• 2 tsp. baking powder • 1/ cup vegetable oil
3
• 1/ tsp. baking soda • 1 1/2 tsp. vanilla extract
2
• 1/ tsp. salt • 1 cup frozen blueberries
4

Preheat oven to 400°F. Place paper liners in 18 muffin cups, set aside.

In a large bowl whisk together all dry ingredients until well

blended. In a separate bowl, beat eggs slightly, add
buttermilk, oil and vanilla. Whisk until smooth. Pour
liquid over dry ingredients. Stir by hand until batter is
just moist, fold in frozen blueberries (do not defrost).
Divide batter evenly among the lined cups. Sprinkle
tops with sugar. Bake in preheated oven for 18–20
minutes or until muffins spring back when lightly
touched in center.

PEPPERMINT KISSES
• 2 egg whites
• 1/ tsp. cream of tartar
2
• 1/ –1/ tsp. peppermint extract, to taste
4 2
• 2/ cup Domino/C&H granulated sugar
3
• red & green paste or gel food coloring

Beat egg white, cream of tartar and peppermint extract in a deep mixing bowl
until soft peaks form. Add sugar, one tablespoon at a time, continuing to beat on
the highest setting, until mixture is shiny and holds a stiff peak.

Preheat oven to 300°F. Arrange racks in the center of the oven. Line two large
baking sheets with parchment or wax paper. Fit two 10" pastry bags with large
round tips. Fold large end of bag into a cuff. Using a small paint brush, paint
several “stripes” of red food color inside one of the pastry bags. Painting inside
the tip and continue up 2/3’s the height of the bag. Fill bag with half of the mixture
and immediately pipe “kisses” about 1/2" apart on the parchment or wax paper
lined baking sheet.

Repeat this process, using the remaining pastry bag, green food coloring and
remaining egg white mixture. Bake 10 minutes. Turn the oven off and allow baking
sheets to remain in the oven with the door closed for an additional 30–40 minutes
until crisp, but not browned. Carefully remove “kisses” from baking sheets and
store in an airtight container at room temperature.

BAKE SALE Success Stories

Connecting Families to Food,

to Each Other
“Thank you for helping us create an unimaginable ‘giving’
family experience.” Those are the words of Melissa Johnson,
past bake sale participant, who raised over $1,100. More
importantly, the Great American Bake Sale allowed her to
work together with her daughters, Emily and Randi, which
resulted in the family connecting over the experience of
making a direct impact in their community. The Johnson’s
garnered extensive media coverage in their hometown of
Sioux Falls, SD, which helped them reach and surpass their
original goal of $500.

From Apple Pie to the

Big Apple
Toni Kerker and her team, Children on the Journey,
called upon the entire community to join in on their
bake sale in Los Angeles. Hard work paid off when
Children on the Journey found out they had raised
more funds than any other participant. As the contest
winner, Toni received a trip to the Food Network in
New York City and tickets to a taping of Emeril Live. “At
the end of the day, this was a rewarding event, generating
not only awareness and funds for a great cause, but for
creating great community building,” says Toni.

Statewide Support for Sweets

Mark Sanford, Governor of South Carolina, proclaimed
August 5–11, 2007 as State Farmers Market Week. In
conjunction with Farmers Market Week, the SC Department
of Agriculture recruited 14 community-based farmers’
markets to host a Certified South Carolina Grown Bake Sale.
“The Bake Sale was a sweet way to help end hunger in the
state and showcase South Carolina’s locally grown products,”
said Hugh Weathers, Commissioner of Agriculture for South
Carolina. With homemade peach cobbler and other sweets,
the farmers’ market raised over $2,700 to support the fight
against hunger.
