Dear Bake Sale Participant,
It takes one part love, one part family, one part fun and a touch of community to help end childhood
hunger in America. With these ingredients you are creating a recipe for success. One out of six
children is at risk of hunger in America. The results of your bake sale will enable these children to
have access to the nutritious food they need to learn, grow and thrive.
In its fifth year, Share Our Strength’s Great American Bake Sale® wants to welcome and thank new
and old participants. Your efforts will help make sure that no child grows up hungry. The bake sales
you hold continue to make a noticeable impact in our fight to end childhood hunger in our nation.
This year, we have partnered with Domino® Sugar, C&H® Sugar, Family Circle magazine and Food
Network. Working together with our sponsors, we have developed new recipes, tips and promotions
that will help you hold a bake sale that is a recipe for success.
On behalf of Share Our Strength, Domino Sugar, C&H Sugar, Family Circle and Food Network,
thank you, your efforts are making certain that no kid is hungry.
Sincerely,
Pat Nicklin
Managing Director

No Kid Hungry
About Share Our Strength
Share Our Strength® is a national
organization working to make sure no
kid in America grows up hungry.
Since 1984, Share Our Strength has raised more than $200
million to fight hunger around the globe. Through the
dedication and commitment of thousands of volunteers,
chefs and corporate sponsors we have created awareness,
made resources available and developed programs that
provide a long-term solution to ending hunger worldwide.
Share Our Strength’s national strategy to end childhood hunger in America works to prevent hunger
on a state-by-state basis. Through comprehensive state partnerships, grant making activities and
nutrition education we find childhood hunger where it hides, and work to end it. In Washington,
DC, Share Our Strength has joined leading hunger advocacy groups and more than 150 community
organizations to establish The Partnership to End Childhood Hunger in the Nation’s Capital. Our goal
is to create similar partnerships in every state to end childhood
hunger in America.

STEPS FOR A SUCCESSFUL BAKE SALE
Baking Basics
To begin, organize a team and assign roles and responsibilities. Decide
who is baking, who is packaging the baked goods and who will help
run the bake sale. Set a fundraising goal and pick a date and location
for your bake sale. Also, create a plan spanning a few weeks so that you
are not trying to organize your bake sale at the last minute.
A Pinch of Zest
Garner support from your community. By involving your community you’ll
have access to additional resources, raise more funds and meet new people.
Work with local businesses to receive donated baked goods, talk to schools and
community centers to borrow tables and chairs and rally your neighbors to
help you bake and sell.
Mix it Up
Provide a wide selection of baked goods for people to choose from.
Include garnishes and toppings on cakes and cookies to make the items
more enticing. Write your shopping list out as you plan what to sell to
make sure you don’t forget important ingredients.
Sweet Substitutions
Make your bake sale healthy by incorporating low-fat baked goods, whole
wheat flour, butter substitutes and desserts with fresh fruit. If you can, include
the nutritional information on the packaging. People with allergies will be
informed of the ingredients used in the baked good and those with dietary
concerns will have options. When packaging baked goods make sure the
portion sizes are appropriate.
Serve It Up
On the day of your bake sale arrive early to set-up and organize baked
goods on the display table. Make sure prices are easy to see and read. Create
promotions, such as a mix-and-match cookie tray, where buyers can choose
any three cookies for $3. Price whole pies and cakes to sell, and provide
buyers with stickers and information on Share Our Strength.

GREAT AMERICAN BAKE SALE RECIPE IDEAS
Bake Sale 101
by Sandra Lee Semi-Homemade
Preheat oven to 350°F. In a medium bowl, stir together cookie mix with cream
cheese until crumbly. Stir in eggs and vanilla extract until well combined. Add enough
flour to make a firm dough that can be rolled out.
On lightly floured surface, roll dough out to 1/4-inch thickness. Use 2" square or round
cutters to cut out cookies. Transfer to an ungreased baking sheet. Use a 3/4-inch
cutter to cut the center out of one-half of the 2" cookies. Bake in preheated oven for
8–10 minutes.
Let cool on baking sheet for 1 minute. Transfer to a wire cooling rack to cool for
5 minutes. Spoon 1/2 teaspoon of jelly onto all whole cookies. Top with remaining
cookies (with centers cut-out.)
Yield: 18–24 cookies
Nutty Brittle
• Nonstick cooking spray
• 24 soft caramel candies, unwrapped
• 3/4 cup toffee peanuts
Preheat oven to 200°F. Line jelly roll pan with foil. Spray foil
with cooking spray and place in oven.
Preheat oven to 400°F. Place paper liners in 18 muffin cups, set aside.
PEPPERMINT KISSES

• 1/ tsp. cream of tartar
2
• 1/ –1/ tsp. peppermint extract, to taste
4 2
• 2/ cup Domino/C&H granulated sugar
3
• red & green paste or gel food coloring
Beat egg white, cream of tartar and peppermint extract in a deep mixing bowl
until soft peaks form. Add sugar, one tablespoon at a time, continuing to beat on
the highest setting, until mixture is shiny and holds a stiff peak.
Preheat oven to 300°F. Arrange racks in the center of the oven. Line two large
baking sheets with parchment or wax paper. Fit two 10" pastry bags with large
round tips. Fold large end of bag into a cuff. Using a small paint brush, paint
several “stripes” of red food color inside one of the pastry bags. Painting inside
the tip and continue up 2/3’s the height of the bag. Fill bag with half of the mixture
and immediately pipe “kisses” about 1/2" apart on the parchment or wax paper
lined baking sheet.
Repeat this process, using the remaining pastry bag, green food coloring and
remaining egg white mixture. Bake 10 minutes. Turn the oven off and allow baking
sheets to remain in the oven with the door closed for an additional 30–40 minutes
until crisp, but not browned. Carefully remove “kisses” from baking sheets and
store in an airtight container at room temperature.
