Wu introduces the students to the

Because sandstone is porous but
shale is less porous, rainwater flows

regular maintenance. But handmade trails vary from
place to place, so it is hard to describe in writing how to
make them. Accordingly, the association has organized
“trailbuilding holidays” for volunteers.
We participated on one such outing, repairing the
Old Dunan Road section of the trail. At one place where
water had washed out a slope alongside the trail, caus
ing collapse, the maintenance crew decided to lay down
layers of rocks to create a solid base for the trail. At first,
Hsu and an old master trail builder examined the face of
the slope visually and discussed how to repair it. Then
they led the team in looking for suitable large stones.
The base of the trail that had been washed away needed
to be filled in with large stones, which had to be selected
for their size and shape. It’s important to plan before
digging. After the stones were put down, they had to be
turned to get the best fit. Only then were they fixed in
place. Then smaller rocks and pebbles had to be found
to fill in the gaps. Finally, sand was poured into the
cracks to solidify the base. Once repaired, this stretch of
trail looked just like neighboring stretches from the top,
but from the side it resembled patched clothing.
“This way of repairing trails is becoming a global
trend,” says Hsu. “And it’s also the method the pio
neers originally used.”

Train 3672, which is soon to be withdrawn from service, passes
through Taitung’s Nanhui townships on its journey from Taitung City to
Fangliao in Pingtung, traveling from Taimali to Dawu in roughly 40 min-
utes. The diesel-hauled train is one of the last in Taiwan still to use the
1970s-era blue-and-white railcars, which have no air-conditioning but
instead rely on ceiling fans for cooling. The sound of the train’s horn,
the smell of the diesel and the whir of the fans make for a highly nos-
talgic atmosphere. For this work, the train served as a stage for pianist
Lee Shih-yang, who adapted an old Paiwan melody into a new piece
more suited to modern ears. The work as a whole combined shuo-
chang (folk storytelling with a rhythmic accompaniment) and dance with
a trip across the local landscape to create something magical.

For example, in ten years of research Cheng Hsueh-ling, a profes-

through experiments on cell cultures and on mice that triterpenoids
and saponins purified from the vines and fruit of Hualien No. 2 and
the similar Okinawa bitter melon can reduce insulin resistance in
cells, indicating that bitter melon has the potential to be developed
into a health supplement to combat Type 2 diabetes.
Meanwhile Professor Hsu Hsue-yin of the Department of Life
Sciences at Tzu Chi University has for the past ten years been us-

cell lines. She has discovered that a certain ingredient has the effect
of inhibiting growth of cancer cells.
The results achieved by research teams under the NSC pro-

HDARES research team has focused its development efforts on
breeding “health-protecting” bitter melon varieties.
This especially applies to Hua lien No. 4, for which Chyuan
Jong-ho’s team was granted plant variety rights in 2008, and No. 5,
which they completed development of in 2010. Both are varieties
that the HDARES began to breed in 2002. Though unprepossessing
in appearance—with their fat and short shape, and dark green skin
with a knobbly, serrated surface—they both prove that “you can’t

A rose in Taiwan
Red roses are a symbol of love, just like the love
Tuong Vy, whose name is Vietnamese for “rose,” has for
Taiwan. That love is what has motivated her to work so
hard to break down the barriers between Taiwan and
Vietnam. In Taiwan, she leads by example, working
hard and proving that Vietnamese people in Taiwan can
also excel. In Vietnam, she presents the positive face of
Taiwan to the Vietnamese people through her videos.
When Taiwan Panorama visited her, Tuong Vy was
nine months pregnant, and she remarked, “We Viet-
namese in Taiwan don’t necessarily have to do any-
thing amazing for Taiwanese society—just raising the
next generation well is contribution enough.” With her
simple approach, Tuong Vy continues to be a beacon of
inspiration and positivity in and for Taiwan. l
