of necessary funding that assisted us.

Background
Establishment of Adama agricultural machinery industry (AAMI)
AAMI was commenced in September 1978 when technical and economical cooperation
agreement was signed between the Ethiopian government and the former Union of Soviet
Socialist Republic (USSR).Subsequently in 1980, a contract was concluded between Minsk
Tractor Works (MTW) of USSR, and National Metal Works Corporation (NMWC) of Ethiopia
to undertake a preliminary study on the project.

VISION
To Prosper Ethiopia in Agricultural Machineries Industry.

MISSION
Design, Build and integrate Agricultural machinery manufacturing plants.
Produce, assemble and supply quality and versatile horse power/HP range Tractors with
associated implements, water pumps and Irrigation equipment used for different agricultural
processes, construction activities,
Municipality operations and others with competitive price to help customers use modern
technology that enables them to be efficient effective and productive in their work.

Main Products and Services of AAMI

Products
Tractors AAMI mainly produces different tractors.
Those are BELARUS, URSUS,CHERY, SWT with different hp.

Walking tractors :walking Tractors with hp 7-15.The brand name of the tractors is known as
‘Belarus’ with different models. This name was taken from the name of the Russian company
from where the raw materials for production are imported. As can be understood from the
historical back ground of the company, the models that were being produced during early age of
the company were MTZ-80/82.
One of the modifications made to the old model was steering system. The MTZ-80/82 models
were difficult to turn them on narrow land span. This is because the steering system of these
tractors is semi-hydraulic. In modified models however, the steering system was made to turn
easily. The steering system in this case is fully hydraulic. The oil pressure enables us to steer the
tractor easily by applying less mechanical force.

Trailers Before eleven years ago AAMI used to import trailers from Italy and supply for
customers. But later on it started manufacturing the trailer here in Ethiopia by importing some
raw materials.Apart from fixed and tipping type trailer Abattoir trailers that are used for meat
transportation from slaughter house are also produced in the company.

Disc harrow and plough : Harrows and ploughs are assembled by the raw materials
that are imported from Italy. The harrow can have 28 or 32 discs. The 28 disc harrow is operated
by the power that is supplied is from the power cylinder. But the one with 32 discs has its own
power cylinder. The cylinder is directly connected to the hydraulic oil tank by hoses.

PRODUCTION SECTION
This is tractors body assembly section. Under this different types of tractors based on their
manufactured country, engine type and operation horse power (hp) can be assembled. It holds
workers sectioned by group, each group has three or four members and one group is assigned to
assemble at list two tractors per day. It has many equipments and tools that are used for the
production system. In the section, there is an overhead crane that has a capacity of lifting 3200
kg of load. This crane can roll from end to end of the production hall and hence it is used for
lifting and taking the raw materials to required position. The production line is a conveyor that is
driven by an electric motor. It works by the chain and sprocket system to move the tractors on
the line. It has a capacity of holding five tractors at a time. When assembly is completed, it puts
the tractor out through the exit. There is a supervisor for the section.
Work flow in Assembly section.
a) Tractor assembly this section as described above on the production section. So we are
focus on what is tractor generally? Tractor is a multipurpose and heavy duty vehicle.
That’s why it’s made powerful and strong. This powerfulness and strength is achieved
because it is produced from very heavy and load resistant parts. During assembly, these
heavy parts need mechanical systems to lift and move them to the required position. In
addition the items by which these heavy parts assembled together should be strong
enough to ensure the safety and stability of the tractor.

Fig.16 tractor assembly section layout

b) Mechanical systems and Tools used the mechanical systems used in the tractor factory are: -
over head crane, fork lift, conveyor and rollers. Over head crane is used to lift and move the
loads, mainly the heavy raw materials from place to place in the production hall. The overhead
crane rolls from end to end of the production hall. Fork lift is a vehicle that carries heavy loads
from out to inside the production hall. It transports the raw materials from container vehicle to
the store and from the store to the production hall. Roller is used to transport materials of
medium weight in the production hall. For example, fuel tank, different shafts, bonnet etc are
transported in the hall by this roller. Conveyor is a mechanical system on which assembly is
done. The conveyor consists of chain and sprocket system that is driven by an electric motor. On
the conveyor, there are stands on which the tractors are assembled. When assembly is completed
the conveyor puts out the tractor through the exit of the hall. Workshop hand tools especially
wrenches, adjustable wrenches, hammers; screw drivers, pliers, etc are used.

Problems in this section
All parts and components are imported from abroad even the parts manufactured in the
company Knowledge gap between workers b/s lack of enough practical training.
Workers are not using hand gloves when they are executing the task.

Manufacturing Section
This is the section in which different agricultural equipments are manufactured. There are metal
work machines like lathe, drilling, milling, grinding machines, vertical saw and all other work
shop tools. It has also its own overhead crane of the same capacity as that of the production
section.
The trailers that are produced are capable of holding 6 tons load.
Work flow in manufacture(implement) section
As we have been stayed in this section, three major operations are performed.
a) Manufacture Trailers
b) Assemble Harrows and ploughs
c) Shaping Different Agricultural materials

Problems we have been identified

We have been identified the following problems in implement section:-
The section is not enough for this all tasks performed
The machines are not enough.

11
There is no safety materials like Goggle, Glove and Apron etc.
There are too much smoke while performing operation like welding and grinding because of lack
of air-conditioning system. This affect the flow and efficiency of work by affecting the health of
workers
-Un-proper worker way of cloth
-Un-wearing protective equipment like, goggle
-Crowded working area because of two and three operations are conducted in one operation area.
Solution we have proposed to overcome the identified problems
- awareness creation about welding poisonous gas
-told them to use protective equipment
-told them to wear cloth properly

Maintenance Section
Under this section, three activities are done. These are maintenance, inspection and painting
activities. Like the other two sections this section also has conveyor and crane. The painting
section is fully equipped and conditioned in such a way that safe and quality painting is done.
There is a system that sucks out dusty air from the room to keep the painted tractor clean until it
dries. There is also circulating water that sucks paint spray into the water pan so that the painter
works under physiological safety.

Pump station
Pump station is mainly designed for assembling and producing different types (that means size,
horse power HP, flow rate, speed, head) and stages (single stage and multistage) centrifugal
water pump. Almost all part and component (raw materials) are imported from Italy. Pumps are
mainly used to in irrigation and construction area. Pump station have different pump stations for
different task, namely station one, station two, station three, station four and station five.
Work flow in pump station
To assemble and produce centrifugal pump it passes several stages and procedure. That is each
part and components of centrifugal pump are assembled according to the design specification.
Pump station have 5 stations, and then I try to describe work flow in each stations. Assembling
and producing process are uses lifting machinery like, fork lift and overhead lifting machine

Problems at compound
Placement of engine, different models of tractors, assembling of engine, pump, pump bed, pump
accessories, trailers like disc harrow and disc plough in compound for a long time even 2-3 years
without shelter. Because of this conditions products are exposed to rust, wear and fading on the
parts and components of the products. This also will create a lot of maintenance cost, wastage of
time and energy on the industry.

Conclusions
This internship program is proved a bridge between the student and the professional life.
Various types of orientation program, takes and training that we have been under taking during
those past two weeks in the industry and in the offices greater our knowledge in many areas we
are very glad to see that what we have learnt in the university can be repeated in the working
world.
