Aloha Edibles Readers, Ohana & Friends,
Our 49th Issue is our Health & Wellness
issue, where I had the amazing, fortunate
opportunity of interviewing the icon and
legend Fran Drescher. It feels like a high
point for us as we add another loud voice
and platform to the cannabis industry
with her Cancer Schmancer Movement
non-profit organization. I’ll never forget
watching her on TV as The Nanny, if I could
go back in time and tell my child-self, “In
20 years you’re going to interview The
Nanny about cannabis on the cover of your
own magazine,” I don't think I'd believe it.
If you would like to get a picture with
Fran or have her autograph a copy of the

I went to Tulsa, Oklahoma for The Green
on Greenwood Expo, put on by The
Oklahoma Cannabis Business Alliance.
It was a very nice event and the very
first of its kind in the state. I was born

and raised in Tulsa so it was a lot of fun
to return and take part in something so
groundbreaking. It also gave me a chance
to see some family and for them to see a
bit of what I do. On my way back to LA,
I paid a visit to the good folks at Pharm
Aid Farms in Colorado. You can read a full
write up about their super cool farm later
in this issue. Fran Drescher was one of
the very coolest and most knowledgeable

Cancer Schmancer not only helps educate
people about health and alternative
treatment options, they can assist with
testing and early detection if you are low-
income or disadvantaged. We admire how
open she is about anti-capitalism and how
we’ve been lied to by corporations for so
long. She says she’s turned her, “pain into
purpose,” which is something I can directly
relate to on many levels.
We also want to take a moment to commend
those who submitted their applications for
licensing in their respective cities. If you
are a company that is in fear of going out of
business, please reach out to us, we want
to hear your story and if we can, help.
Really exciting things are happening in
our industry, the CBD drug Epidiolex was
rescheduled to a Schedule V drug, it’s
not the best thing to happen, but perhaps
a move in the right direction. California
celebrities we’ve had the chance to talk to
so having her on the cover of the Health
issue is a real treat. Elon Musk went on
The Joe Rogan Experience last month
and it was a very entertaining episode.
They sipped whiskey, talked about Teslas,
tunnels, magnets and magnates, and
later in the show they smoked a bit of a
blunt together. Elon didn’t really hesitate
to hit it, but didn’t quite look like he knew
how to inhale. It seemed like the normal
enough way to puff a cigar which makes a
certain amount of sense and he also said
marijuana didn’t affect him.
I’d like to see him do a dab and hold that
hit in, then see how unaffected by THC
he feels. That one little un-inhaled blunt
puff caused quite a stir among the Tesla
shareholders and drove the stock price
down somewhat. So did some tweets and
things but Joe Rogan had some weird
things to say about it afterwards, taking
credit for sinking stocks once he was
chatting with other stoner comedians.
Blunts meanwhile, are more popular than
ever and we have all the info on the best
hemp wraps and wood tips in our reviews
section.
Assembly Bill 2020 was just passed as
we go to close out this issue, allowing the
cities and venues to permit local cannabis
consumption events as opposed to limiting
these types of events to fairgrounds. Not
to mention watching Elon Musk smoke
a blunt on Joe Rogan’s podcast felt like a
revolutionary moment in history.
Last month, I had the pleasure of speaking
about the Cannabis Business and Investing
at KauaiCann, the first ever cannabis
consumer event in Kauai. This month
I'll be speaking at the UtahCann the first
ever educational cannabis event in Utah,
helping to dispel common misperceived
stereotypes of stoners. Additionally, at the
end of the month we will be conducting our
second annual Edibles Magazine™ Panel at
the LA Comic Con Please join us if you can!

Our Hip Hop issue earlier in the Summer
featured Ta Smallz on the cover, and
he finally got his day in court facing his
mother’s murderer. Sherill Smother was
found guilty of First Degree Murder for
killing Marsha Carter in the early 1980s.
Justice finally caught up to him over 30
years later and he actually tried to flee
rather than show up for sentencing.
He was caught later in the day and is
currently being detained by police at the
hospital while he waits to go to prison.
He’ll be receiving a sentence of 25 years
to life at minimum. Justice wasn’t swift
this time, but at least it finally came and
Ta can finally put this chapter of his life to
rest. Congratulations.

It was a genuine pleasure to
connect with Fran Drescher,
and have the opportunity to be
the first cannabis magazine
to have her on our cover. You
know her from her undeniably
recognizable voice and her six
seasons on The Nanny, a show
she co-created with her ex-
husband, who eventually came
out as gay, which inspired the
show Happily Divorced. She’s
written several books including
Cancer Schmancer, and Here’s
Whining. She’s appeared in
numerous movies in the past
few decades, some of our
favorites she appeared in were
Jack, Beautician and The Beast,
Spinal Tap, UHF, The Hollywood
Knights, Hotel Transylvania
(Parts 1, 2, and 3) and Cadillac
Man. Fran was so sweet and
gracious, and quite frankly one
of the nicest celebrities I’ve ever
interviewed. I grew up watching
her show and movies and you
can hear the excitement in my
voice I tried to hold back in our
podcast.
Fr an was leaving her
acupuncturist on her way to
her holistic dentist in Malibu,
California. We begin to talk
about how surgery should be
the absolute last resort, she
then goes on to the importance
of clean medicine, and continues
by emphasizing that cannabis
should not be the last resort.

Science Conference in Portland,
Oregon.
“Stand at a precipice of a new

very effective, but where’s
money there’s usually greed,
and where there’s greed
there’s compromise of physical

the growing, manufacturing,
you know. The need to
raise awareness about the
environment, the plant and the
user,” Fran said.
“That’s a big issue with me,
because I’m very aware. I know
a lot of people engaged in this
industry, but as the Founder
and President of the Cancer
Schmancer Movement, a big
cornerstone of our mission is
to educate people and share
awareness to realizing that

industry potentially being what

subscribers how to detoxify their lives and home
from harmful chemicals, pesticides and plastics.
She has this year publicly joined the cannabis
education sector by adding the emphasizes about

connecting the choices we make and empowering
people to realize that their purchasing power,
what they buy, is not only their vote but also their
purpose.”

lives. Even though we complain to administration,
to the White House, we can try and change
legislation, the fastest way to really see change is
with purchasing power.”
“For example, if everyone stopped drinking cola
today, they’d stop making it tomorrow. You don’t
need regulation, you don’t need Washington, you
don’t need anything. You just need to stop buying
it and stop enabling the sociopaths who don’t give
the user. Otherwise, this whole opportunity a shit about you or the planet, but only making

“So there I was, with perky breasts, they said take
gin and tonic to go to bed for the restless leg, stop
eating so much spinach. So I did all that in an attempt
to cure myself. All the while, I had Uterine Cancer.”
Cancer Schmancer has “Fran Vans” that help get
access to low-income people to get early testing
done for early detection.
When Fran came out of surgery for her hysterectomy
she was notified they has taken her appendix as well.
They told her it was standard hospital protocol, to
which she replied, “You could have told me you were

Her encounter with Uterine cancer began
Fran’s path to discovering alternative
health and wellness treatments.
“This was 18 years ago. They said a radical
hysterectomy would essentially cure me,
then two weeks after the surgery they
said that I could do breakia therapy on
the vaginal cuff to just make sure that no
floater cells got stuck there when they
sewed me up. I opted out of that, after
doing research and realizing that kind of
radiation is not without permanent side
effects. I already was given a 95% chance
of non-recurrence. I thought that was
good enough for me. I’m not going to ruin
what’s left of me, in perfect or imperfect
working order,” she said.
Prior to that encounter with cancer, Fran
and her husband at the time, experienced
a horrific home invasion, where she
and her girl friend who was over for
dinner, were violently raped in 1985. In
other interviews, Fran had mentioned
experiencing Post Traumatic Stress, as
well as Post Traumatic Growth (where you
throw yourself into work after a traumatic
experience in order to cope but experience
tremendous growth in a short period of
time, without actually dealing with the
heart of the problem).
When asked if she used cannabis for PTSD
from that event she said, “It depends, I did
smoke pot then. The night that it happened
I had already quit cigarette smoking and I
recall sitting there, with a joint in one hand
and a cigarette in the other.”
“I think that how people react to it is very
personal and individual. If it’s going to
make you paranoid, it [cannabis] may not
be for you. I had to also come to terms
with the fact that I might have used to

“pretty radical non-profit in the health space.”
Their goal is to help educate the consumer
about the toxins we consume around us every
day. Her mission in learning from her own
experience with cancer, is to make cancer

was not obese and I was too young, although 1 out
of 4 women are young and things who get it. I don’t
know why they wouldn’t have just tested me to

The appendix regulates the lymphatic system.
Fran attributes a constant flux of inflammation in
her body because of the removal of her functioning
organ. Her Master Class Health Summit brings

feelings. I had to deal with that. I had to
come to terms with that and start facing
my feelings, instead of numbing myself
from them.”
“Once I started doing that and getting in
touch with it [my feelings] in psychotherapy,
it automatically reduced my pot usage, I

think in a very healthy way. I got into the habit
of feeling my feelings, expressing my feelings,
and pot became more of an occasional social
indulgence. Back then its medicinal qualities
and aspects and cannabinoid support wasn’t
being widely discussed.”
When asked what her most memorable
moments from her Nanny days were, she
said, “Definitely having my own parking spot
with my name on it in the lot, made me feel
like I ‘made it.’ Being on the cover of TV Guide.
Having guests like Elton John and Elizabeth
Taylor, Bette Midler Dan Aykroyd, Jay Leno,
Whoopi Goldberg, Ray Charles, and Rosie
O’Donnell were just some of the unbelievable
guests over the years.”
“Those were all incredible experiences and
having so much to say and do about it, writing
and starring in it, sometimes directing
and executive producing, it was a quite a
momentous experience that continues to be
the gift that keeps on giving.”
If you hope to see a reboot or spin-off of The
Nanny, Fran said, “I’m not opposed to it. But
no one’s called about it, and I think that for
us a reboot would really be the characters 20
years later, there would be some similarities,
but it couldn’t be the same show. And that
in it of itself might be problematic. I don’t
know. I’m working on a lot of other projects
right now and people always ask about it. But
nobody’s called.”
In 2008, Fran announced that she was
considering running for the Senate to
succeed Hillary Clinton. When asked if she
would consider running again she said, “I
think I had got a series or something, I don’t
really remember, all I know is that I’m always
being urged to run.”
“I kind of have decided that it’s such a
polarizing congress that I can wield more
influence as a celebrity, because now we have
social media and I worry that because my
adrenals don’t work so well, I have to keep my
stress levels as low as possible. I don’t think
that’s possible to do that in congress. Also,
there are other platforms I am passionate
about and that’s all I really want to focus on.”
“I don’t want to spend half my life trying to raise
money to campaign, or speaking to rotary

clubs about their concerns, which are legitimate to
them, but not really legitimate to me. When you’re
an elected official you have to serve all the people,
I appreciate that completely. But I think that at this
stage in my life and the way that congress is going I
can accomplish more outside of that system.”
At Fran Drescher’s annual Cabaret Cruise, guests
sail away for an exclusive, all-VIP experience with
cocktails, hors d'oeuvres, dinner with Fran and a
night of New York's finest cabaret talent. “Every
June in New York Harbor, I speak, everyone who
comes gets to take a picture with me and then we
sail around New York harbor for an intimate gourmet

off of Broadway, all aboard the Hornblower Infinity.

The South American
country of Uruguay has
a population of 3.4 million
and borders Argentina,
Brazil and the Atlantic
Ocean. It’s known for its
liberal policies, it’s verdant
interior, colonial towns,
coastlines and a rich wine
industry. Uruguay was the
first country in the world
to fully legalize the sale of
cannabis nationwide. The
landmark decision came
in 2013 and has been
slowly implemented since.
Sales, all of which must
go through the federal
government, officially
started in the summer
of 2017. According to The
Cannabist collectives or
dispensaries are starting
to pop up throughout
Montevideo, the country’s
capital. Only citizens of
Uruguay are permitted to
purchase cannabis, and
only in limited quantities,
reports the official
travel site, Guru’Guay.
“Uruguayan citizens
and registered residents
living here for at least two
years are able to buy up
to 40 grams of marijuana
per month from the
pharmacy,” the site adds.
Visitors, however, are
not allowed to purchase
the substance. But there
is a loophole, according
to several sources,
including Guru’Guay.
While visitors may not
purchase cannabis, if
they are given it, then it’s
theirs for the smoking–
but public consumption
laws must be obeyed,

Coming to Baltimore, Maryland

The Cannabis Science Conference is
one of the most respected industry
conferences that exist. This past
August 27-29th, over 3,000 people
came out to learn about the Science
of Cannabis. There were exhibitors,
break-out sessions, abstracts, a
pre-expo boot camp, and keynote
speakers like Fran Drescher. It was
a quality educational event where
scientists, doctors and professionals
in the medical industry came to
further their cannabis knowledge.
It was the first cannabis expo Fran
Drescher chose to speak at, and when
her camp reached out to me to ask
about Josh Crossney, the organizer, I
had only positive things to say about
Josh and his mission to educate.
“We were honored to have welcomed
Fran Drescher to her first Canna event
and are looking forward to her Master
Class Health Summit event October
23rd, 2018 in Los Angeles.” Josh said.
“Fran Drescher is the perfect
advocate for this industry. She
talked about how her dad uses it
for Parkinson’s. She is timeless and
hasn’t skipped a beat. And a lot of it is
because of the way she lives her life.”
Josh reiterated the importance of
using one’s platform to educate,
“Influencers are very important to
this industry, it really feels great
to introduce Fran Drescher to this
community. It is people like Fran
who give us credibility by going
public to share their stories and
personal relationship with the plant.
That is powerful to have that kind of
influence.”
Fran also eloquently educated with

platform, which is, “How you live =
How you feel.” What you put in on
and around your body has an effect
on you, which is why we should strive

I had the good fortune of staying a couple of
days with Skylar Walker and Ivelis Acevedo
of Pharm Aid Farms™ on their beautiful
organic cannabis farm in Walsenburg,
Colorado to find out what the secret is behind
growing such delicious and potent organic
flower outdoors. Pharm Aid has been
producing incredible cannabis in Northern
California for a while now and they have their
eyes on Oklahoma next. After seeing the
Colorado operation up close, I have no doubt
they’ll continue to conquer with kindness
wherever they go. The farm was isolated
and peaceful and the plants were the best
I’ve ever seen up close. Fragrant sticky buds
growing in the sun with an average THC
potency of 27%. I asked Skylar about the
specifics of his set up and he was happy to
share the details.
Soil and Potting System
Skylar told me, "We tried for the first
year to use native soil, but it wasn’t
conducive to good growing habits be-
cause it used too much water and had
some pests. So we went to a 100 gal-
lon smart pot, which is a tan colored
felt fabric pot. The tan color reflects a
lot of the intensity of the sun, so it’s not
a black pot absorbing all the heat. The
particular soil we’re using is a Berger
water holding blend. It’s a BM6, main-
ly a peat and *perlite blend, it holds a
lot of water deep in the pot where the
main root system of the plant is, and
the top will evaporate lightly due to the
dry environment in this climate. We
use a water drip line so we’re able to
soak the soil a lot more efficiently. The
soil starts out inert and we charge it
with Age Old ™ and Roots Organic ™
granular nutrients so the soil becomes
charged (so to speak) for vegging as it
flows into a phosphorus and blooming
times (in July). Then we just keep liquid
feeding all the way through. As we’re
able to flush the plants over the last

two weeks, which is the phase we’re in
now, we’ll slowly pull out some of that
green nitrogen color and yellow up the
plants a little bit to have a sweeter end
product to smoke."

"The watering system we installed this
season is really similar to any indoor
grow or greenhouse grow with inline
injection mixing. We use Mix Rite ™ as
a company, we mix up our nutrients in
a 50 gallon drum, and put a concen-
trate of liquid weather it be from Veg
+ Bloom ™, their base line of products
or their Shine + Bloom Booster, or
Age Old ™ has a line of liquid nutrients
we’ll run at points. We’ll mix it up in
the drum, then through a simple hose
that goes back into the main plumbing
system and to the garden itself, and
there’s three different sections of one
inch and a quarter spigots throughout
a whole acre. Each section then comes
off and goes into one inch polyline that
breaks down for each row of twenty six
plants, there’s a ¾ inch polyline with a
valve that we’re able to irrigate weather
it’s plain water, or like I was explaining
with the fertilizer, and we’re able to irri-
gate the plants and feed them through
liquid feed throughout the whole sea-
son and it cuts back a lot on the cost
of employees being out here with a
water wand hand watering. A quarter
inch line that goes into the plant that
has a drip line on it, and each one of
these drippers puts out a half gallon an
hour, and at the end of the season to
flush we just open up the end and let
a lot more water go through and flush
any excess nitrogens out of the plant a
lot more efficiently and a lot faster than
traditional hand watering or other wa-
ter methods take. Out here in Colorado
evaporation is key so we don’t use a full
360 degree mister, we do drip, so that
way it’s always directly on the soil," he
said.
Trellis Support System
"Trellis netting was chosen to be used
originally due to the bamboo not being
cost efficient. we would have had to
have put thousands of bamboos in-
dividually in front of these plants. We
found that *trellis, same thing a lot of
indoor guys and greenhouse growers
use, stretched width wise and length
ways throughout a stretch, we par-
ticularly use 6 plants that we make a
run of so you can still access different
alleys. It’s put down low, 30 inches
off the ground and another 12 inches
above that and we usually have a third
layer through to catch all the tops as
the plants become a lot heavier and
bigger. In the high wind areas, the
green screen actually blocks most
of the wind but anything else, as the
wind is blowing this plant and moving it

"The wind screens were developed
through trial and error over the last
four years that we’ve farming out here.
We noticed that in the Spanish peak re-
gions and Rocky Mountains the winds
would blow with extreme force off the
mountains and flow through the valley
areas, but being out here in the high
plains there’s really no trees or any
vegetation to block that, so through
some different trial and error of dif-

ferent fence methods we decided that
the wind screen that could be taken on
and off seasonally when it’s not in use
and can be folded up and preserved
and when it is in use being secured
to this steel fencing, blocks the initial
force of the blow while still allowing
a lot of ventilation to flow through the
plants and still have enough air circu-
lation. They’re 70% block and still allow
light to come through. It’s secured to a
steel 14 gauge fence that goes down
and wood columns to hold it through
the wind. It protects the crop and pro-
vides greenhouse quality flower while
still growing outdoors in a sustainable
method without high electric costs and
other high expenses that indoor grows
and high tech greenhouses can incur.,"
Skylar said.
Drying Racks
"Drying racks were created at Pharm
Aid Farms to maximize our space. We
only have one barn for drying this year
so we have to condense two acres of
product into a 20 by 60 room tradition-
al whole plant hanging wouldn’t have
been an effective use of space, so we’re
using machines to debug the product
after harvest, we do hand deleafing
and then all the flower is dried in these
racks, which are screened and lumber
construction, that are 8 feet wide, 32
inches long. Over a 5-7 day drying pe-
riods it’s in this room drying the whole
room is full we come through and light-
ly toss and fluff an area of the product
a little bit when it starts to break down
as it’s drying, some of the cannabis can
flatten, or become soft and flat as the
weight of it pushes down, so it’s real
important to come back everyday and
toss that product and dry it on all it’s
different sides. This season we’re us-
ing dehumidification if needed, but it’s
a dry environment here in Colorado so
we may not use much of it. Air circula-
tion is good and eventually we’ll install
our HVAC and other room temperature
settings inside this area here. Each
flat can hold roughly 16 to 18 pounds
of drying flower. So all in all with the
vertical system, currently we can do
around seventeen hundred pounds at

a time on the walls with these trays to-
tal in the room. We’re working on our
prototype to figure out how to make
carts on wheels sturdy enough to dry
and similar to a scaffolding unit but still
incorporates drying racks with lumber
and screens you can pull out," he said.

The Los Angeles International
Airport released their official policy
on carrying cannabis while traveling
through LAX January 1st, 2018. They say nothing has changed,
just that someone finally noticed the website policy post.
The official policy posted on their website says:
"While federal law prohibits the possession of marijuana (inclusive
of federal airspace,) California’s passage of proposition 64, effective
January 1, 2018, allows for individuals 21 years of age or older to
possess up to 28.5 grams of marijuana and 8 grams of concentrated
marijuana for personal consumption. In accordance with Proposition
64, the Los Angeles Airport Police Department will allow passengers
to travel through LAX with up to 28.5 grams of marijuana and 8 grams
of concentrated marijuana. However, passengers should be aware
that marijuana laws vary state by state and they are encouraged to
check the laws of the states in which they plan to travel."
Alicia Hernandez, a spokeswoman for the Airport Police told The
LA Times in an interview, “We are California peace officers and we
enforce California law, so if we come across individuals carrying
substances that are legal under state law, there is nothing we will do.”
I learned about this leniency in 2016, traveling through LAX to
Oakland, with a ridiculous amount of medicinal edibles, flower
and capsules. In the end the airport police are a division of the Los
Angeles Police Department and required to enforce what is within
their jurisdiction, the local city and state laws. I was let go after an
hour of interrogation, which included the officers actually calling the
800 number to verify my doctor’s recommendation, followed by the
officers tallying up about the total amount of milligrams in products
I was carrying (less than 28,500 milligrams of THC). I was free to
catch my flight, and with lack of anything to legitimately lecture me
about, the officer told me to just keep my doctor’s recommendation
in better condition, i.e. put it in a protective plastic sheet, because
they didn’t like how old and torn up my note looked from being in my
purse for nearly a year.
The TSA states that its emphasis is protecting the public from
terrorism and threats to the public safety. The agency noted that if
a TSA officer discovers an item that may violate federal law during
screenings, the officer will refer it to local police. It’s then up to that
local law enforcement to decide what to do. In addition, the TSA
notes: Marijuana remains an illegal substance under federal law.
The passenger's originating and destination airports are not taken
into account. Airport law enforcement will be notified if marijuana
is discovered during screening of carry-on and checked baggage.
Whether or not the passenger is allowed to travel with marijuana is
up to local law enforcement's discretion.
Whatever you do, do not put lithium ion vape batteries or disposable
vape pens in your checked luggage. They will confiscate them, as
they are still not approved for travel underneath the plane.

Strawberry Fields Pre-rolls

While in Colorado recently, I had my first
opportunity to visit a recreational dispensary
in the state. I was touring the Pharm Aid
Farm, and Skylar Walker took me to The
Strawberry Fields shop. Strawberry Fields
is the biggest chain of cannabis dispensaries
in CO, I was told. We had a long drive from
Pueblo to Walsenburg and I was going to be
in the area for a couple of days so I picked up
some Key Lime Pie pre-rolls. Being a full time
California cannabis user, I hadn’t actually
had much Colorado flower within the state
of Colorado. I wasn’t sure what to expect,
but they were having happy hour specials so
I decided to go top shelf. I registered to win
a ceramic dab rig before leaving and took a
picture of a painting of Bruce Lee. Once we
were back at the ranch and inside we fired
up a KLP preroll and worked on a Star Wars
jigsaw puzzle Skylar had laid out for a little
while. The weed smelled and tasted good,
and seemed to have a very nice terpene
balance. We ended the night getting caught
up on Better Call Saul and finishing the
prerolls. They were tasty and burned smooth

enough for house joints, especially at such a
nice price - the top shelf were $8 and a full
gram. When I’m back in Colorado I definitely
will stop by Strawberry Fields again and get
some more flower and prerolls, and I hope

Pharmaceuticals' Epidiolex
CBD Drug to a Schedule 5

Exactly 90 days after the
FDA gave new drug approval
to GW Pharmaceuticals’
Epidiolex, the DEA waited to
the very last minute of their
deadline to make a ruling
on rescheduling the epilepsy
drug.
Thursday, September
27, 2018 is when the
DEA officially made their
announcement. It states,
“this order places FDA-
approved drugs that contain
CBD derived from cannabis
and no more than 0.1 percent
tetrahydrocannabinols in
Schedule V.”
A Schedule V drug, consists
of the following criteria:

with an accepted medical
use, abuse of the drug may
lead to limited physical or
psychological dependence.
Other drugs in this category
are Lyrica, pseudoephedrine
and codeine.
Rather than rescheduling
CBD in general, it says
that only drugs or products

Haunted Freemason’s Lodge

While in Walsenburg, Colorado, I was
told by Skylar Walker from Pharm Aid
Farms that the Colorado Cannabis
Growers Association had started
renting a building with the address,
420 Main Street. Even better, it was an
old Freemasons lodge, and on top of
that it was supposedly haunted. Sky
also said, “There’s no power there
right now, so it’s totally dark.” We were
heading into town anyway so I asked if
there was any chance we could drop
by and see it? A haunted Masonic
lodge with no power at night and with
the address of 420 seemed too weird
and cool an opportunity to pass up. We
went to a local recreational dispensary
called The Meduso Company where
we watched a few minutes of The
Emmys and loaded up on smoking
supplies. We met Travis of the CCGA
sitting in a rolling office chair on the
sidewalk outside of the building.
The historic Walsenburg courthouse
was just across the street from the
Freemason’s Lodge (built in 1910),
and we made our way inside using our
phones as flashlights.
We started rolling some joints after we
all had found some seats in the dark
there in the main hall and Travis told
us that before the grower’s association
began meeting there, some of the
locals were not comfortable with the
idea of the building being used. “This
lady in town named Barb, Barb told
me that there’s only one building in
town she won’t set foot in, and that’s
the one.” Greg continued, “Barb said,
‘You gotta get that place cleansed.
You need to get the evil out and I don’t
mean with a priest. A priest aint’ good
enough. You need a Shaman, like a
real medicine man.’ And I know the
tribal guys around here so I found
the Shaman and he said he’d need a
meal and some tobacco, cause’ that’s
the price for him, and that he’d do the
ceremony.” Let me add that this was all
being told by the light of a smartphone
while we passed the jay around and

get out.

set, Mason’s robes and uniforms, a
piano, candles, an alter and more old
stuff like that. It was so surrealistic
and eerie. So glad I went. Masons, and
ghosts, and cannabis - oh my. I love it
when trips take these side tracks.

Why It’s Important
for Cannabis

It is intended to inform readers of the issues at stake in the
upcoming election and to encourage anyone concerned with
cannabis access and legalization to vote, get involved, and
make sure the voices of cannabis advocates are heard in this
election.
Election Day is rapidly approaching on November 6,
2018. Traditionally, turnout is significantly lower in non-
presidential elections. For example, only 36.4% of eligible
voters voted in 2014, the last non-presidential national
election cycle. While the Presidency is not on the ballot this
year, many other important offices and ballot initiatives are.
This election will decide among other things, the majority
parties in the House and Senate, governorships and control
of state legislatures in many states, statewide proposition
ballots related to cannabis and CBD legality and access, and
innumerable important local races that may directly affect
whether a local community prohibits or allows cannabis
businesses to operate legally in their jurisdiction. This
article will outline briefly some of the most important issues
1/19/18 1:16 PM at stake in the upcoming elections and provide a summary
of key statewide ballot measures. It is not intended as a
voter guide, but rather as a general summary and reference
and to encourage all readers of this magazine and anyone
concerned with cannabis legality and safe access to vote,
donate, volunteer, and make sure their voices are heard in
this important election.
NATIONWIDE LANDSCAPE:
Cannabis remains federally prohibited under Schedule 1,
despite being legal for adult-use currently in nine states
plus Washington DC, legal for medical use in thirty-one
states, and having some limited legality for CBD or low-
THC cannabis in 15 other states. This federal prohibition has
important consequences even in states such as California
and Colorado where cannabis is legal. These challenges
include difficulties in obtaining safe and regulated banking,
inability to transport cannabis and cannabis products across
state lines, and local and state restrictions and limits on
cannabis and CBD access due to concerns about the federal
legality status. There are numerous bills, many with at least
some bipartisan support, in both the House and Senate
that would move forward with changing this status. Some
of these bills would fully remove the federal prohibition and
legalize cannabis nationally. Most are more limited in scope
and would range from leaving cannabis legality up to the
states, decriminalization, or more restrictive allowances for
CBD legality, research, and medicinal cannabis access for
veterans. The results of the upcoming election will directly
impact whether any of these bills will make it out of Senate
or House committees and successfully pass through both
houses of Congress.
Elections Update
STATE AND LOCAL ELECTIONS:
While ending the federal prohibition remains an important
goal, in many ways state and local government regulations
have more direct impact on the ability of cannabis
businesses to operate and for safe access to legal cannabis
and CBD for individual patients and users. It is extremely
important to be informed and vote on statewide and down-
ballot local races as well as nationwide elections. For
example, in California, while cannabis is legal on the state
level, currently city and county governments have final
approval on whether cannabis businesses will be allowed
in that municipal jurisdiction. It is very helpful to know your
local officials’ positions on cannabis and to work to educate
candidates and officials on these issues. Many candidates
and officeholders are open to meeting with voters and
constituents to discuss cannabis policy and often benefit
from learning more about cannabis, especially with regards
to its medical benefits, its positive impact on groups such
as veterans and the elderly, and correcting stereotypes and
misconceptions. It is important that those in the industry, as
well as citizens concerned with cannabis rights, vote for and
support through donations and volunteering pro-cannabis
local and statewide candidates for office.
STATEWIDE AND LOCAL BALLOT MEASURES:
Lastly, ballot measures and voter referendums have been
important tools for moving forward with state and local legality
for cannabis. This is a brief summary of some important
statewide ballot measures this year. In states where cannabis
is legal, be sure to look for any local initiatives related to
cannabis in your communities.
COLORADO – Amendment X: Would change definition of
Industrial Hemp to that used by federal government. Designed
to allow industrial hemp industry to adapt to changes in
federal policy.
MICHIGAN – Proposal 1: Would legalize Adult-Use
“Recreational” Cannabis for persons 21 and over.
MISSOURI – Amendments 2 and 3 and Proposition 3: all would
legalize medical cannabis. These different measures would
allow for variant tax rates (2, 15, and 4 percent respectively).
NORTH DAKOTA – Measure 3: Would legalize Adult-Use
cannabis for persons 21 and over and allow automatic
expungement process for cannabis-related prior convictions.
OKLAHOMA – Question 788: Would legalize medical cultivation,
use, and possession of cannabis.
UTAH – Proposition 2: Would legalize medical cultivation and
use of cannabis for certain conditions.
CONCLUSION:
The voices and votes of citizens who support cannabis
legalization and access is essential to achieving further
progress on the federal, state, and local levels towards safe
and legal access to medicinal and adult-use cannabis and
CBD. Hopefully, cannabis advocates, industry professionals,
and members of our community will make sure they vote and
continue to be active, engaged citizens in the electoral process.
